  • This paper reports the experimental study of the heat transfer characteristics of the wake region behind a cylinder in cross flow. Local heat transfer coefficient was measured from the stagnation point (θ=0°) to 180°, and the variation of Nu in the axial direction along the cylinder was also studied. The results show that the heft transfer rate at the rear (θ=180°) near the duct wall can increase as much as 58% over the 2 dimensional value at the center of the duct. The heat transfer profiles in the wake region also show distinct effects of the aspect ratio and the heat transfer boundary condition.

  • Stratified flow past a three-dimensional obstacle such as a sphere has been a long-lasting subject of geophysical, environmental and engineering fluid dynamics. In order to investigate the effect of the stratification on the near wake, in particular, the unsteady vortex formation behind a sphere, numerical simulations of stratified flows past a sphere are conducted. The time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a three-dimensional finite element method and a modified explicit time integration scheme. Laminar flow regime is considered, and linear stratification of density is assumed under Bossiness approximation. The computed results include the characteristics of the near wake and the unsteady vortex shedding. With a strong stratification, the separation on the sphere is suppressed and the wake structure behind the sphere becomes planar, resembling that behind a vertical cylinder.

  • THe influence of internal acoustic exitation through a square prism on the turbulent wake flow characteristics was investigated. The intermediate wake region where is about ten times the respective length of the body was experimentally investigated using a conditional phase average technique. At first the static base pressures of square prism and the shedding frequencies have been measured at various internal acoustic exciation frequencies. The experiment were performed under the four cases of internal acoustic excitation frequencies 0Hz 30Hz($St_e$=0.09) 65Hz($St_e$=0.20) 120Hz($St_e$=0.38) And velocity vector fields were presented and discussed. The influence of acoustic exvitation frequencies on the structure of intermediate turbulent wake region is evident. As the internal acoustic frequency increased shedding frequency gradually increased and aerodynamic force decreased. Also it was found that the vortex shedding occurs dratically well and shedding frequency reached nearly the same value as the internal acoustic frequency. but above Strouhal number 0.3 the influence disappeared.

  • The present study addresses a computational work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the pressure recovery of a two-dimensional subsonic diffuser. The turbulent wake is generated by a cylinder with a small diameter, which is installed at the diffuser inlet. Computation is applied to two-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes equations. The computational results are qualitatively well compared to existing experimental data. The results show that the diffuser pressure recovery is strongly dependent on the diameter and location of the cylinder. It is found that there is a certain diameter and location of cylinder for the diffuser pressure recovery to be most enhanced. Compared with no cylinder case, the diffuser performance increases up 24%.

  • In this paper, the wake structures behind a square cylinder at the Reynolds number of 22,000 are simulated using the large eddy simulation, and the main features of the wake structure associated with unsteady vortex-shedding are investigated. The Smagorinsky model is used for parametrization of the subgrid scales. The finite element method with isoparametric linear elements is employed in the computations. Unsteady computations are performed using the explicit method with streamline upwind scheme for the advection term. The time integration incorporates a subcycling strategy. No-slip condition is enforced on the wall surface. A comparative study between two-and three-dimensional computations puts a stress on the three-dimensional effects in turbulent flow simulations. Simulated three-dimensional wake structures are compared with numerical and experimental results reported by other researchers. The results include time-averaged, phase-averaged flow fields and numerically visualized vortex-shedding pattern using streaklines. The results show that dynamics of the vortex-shedding phenomenon are numerically well reproduced using the present method of finite element implementation of large eddy simulation.

  • A study of three-dimensional unsteady incompressible flow past elliptic disk with aspect ratio 3 is presented. Numerical visualization using the vortex filament method was performed at Reynolds number of 20,000 on the basis of the minor diameter, the random walk method was used to calculate viscous diffusion effect. We suggest 3 stages about the wake development according to its structures, stability and motions and described the characteristics of each stages. The structure of the elliptic wake is more complicate and unstable than the wake behind a circular disk.

  • In this study, a experimental work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the velocity distribution of a diffuser with PIV method. The turbulent wake is generated by a rectangular prism, which is installed at the inlet of a diffuser. The results show that the velocity recovery of the subsonic diffuser is dependent on the height and location of rectangular prism. It is found that a certain height of the rectangular prism to generate the turbulent wake give a better velocity recovery, compared with no rectangular prism.

  • Flows around two oscillating cylinders in side-by-side arrangement at Re=185 are simulated using immersed boundary method. The cylinders oscillate vertically with prescribed sinusoidal function in opposite directions in uniform cross-flow. Flow patterns and drag & lift forces are described by varying distance between two cylinders and oscillating frequency. Time series of flow patterns are investigated along with corresponding drag k lift coefficients.

  • An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoke wheel-type wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotating direction (CW and CCW) and the normalized passing frequency $(0{\leq}St_H{\leq}0.20)$. The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was $Re_d=375$. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotating directions was examined in detail, which gave a significant reduction of $X_R$. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence.
