The purpose of this study was to investigate the appropriate amounts of phase change materials to give objective and subjective wear sensations. Vapor-permeable water-repellent fabrics with (WR-PCM) and without (WR) octadecane containing microcapsules were obtained by wet-porous coating process. Then, calculating the area of the WR-PCM treated clothes, we estimated the total calories of the clothing by multiplying the heat of fusion and heat of crystallization of PCM to the calculated area. Wear tests were conducted in both warm environment $(30^{\circ}C,\;65\%\;RH)$ and cold environment $(5^{\circ}C,\;65\%\;RH)$ with sports warm up style experimental garments made with WR and WR-PCM fabrics. Rectal, skin, and clothing microclimate temperatures, saliva and subjective evaluation measurements were done during the wear test. There was no difference of rectal and mean skin temperatures between WR and WR-PCM, but the clothing microclimate temperature of WR-PCM under warm environment was slightly lower than that of WR. In cold environment, WR-PCM showed much higher temperature than in WR. Saliva change did not appear between clothes, but did between two environments. Although subjective sensation between WR and WR-PCM was not significantly different, WR-PCM was rated as cooler than WR in warm environment and as warmer than WR in cold environment. The results of this study indicated that octadecane containing microcapsules in water-repellent fabric provide cooling effect.
WR 2721 (S-2-(3-aminopropylaminoethylphosphorothioate) is a radioprotective drug that is now undergoing clinical trials in the United States and Japan. a liquid chromatographic electrochemical method for the determination of WR 2721 an WR 3689 [S-2-(3-methylaminopropylamino)ethylphorothioate] in human plasma was developed in this study. This method includes the use of a Hg/Au electrochemical detector and a cyano column for the direct measurement of WR 2721 and WR 3689 in plasma. An analog of WR 2721, WR 149846 was used as an internal standard. WR 2721 and WR 3689 could be well separated from the solvent front, with a mobile phase of acetonitrile-water (20:80), 0.1M acetic acid and 1.2 mM sodium octane sulfonate. This method was shown to be precise. Both intra-day and inter-day results were within 10% CV. Also, sample preparation was fairly simple. Since WR 2721 and WR 3689 were unstable at room temperature, it was essential to use an automatic sample processor with a refrigerator, especially for carrying out routine analyses.
The selected five plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains, WR8-3 (Pseudomonas fluorescens), WR8-6 (P. putida), WR9-9 (P. fluorescens), WR9-11 (Pseudomonas sp.), and WR9-16 (P. putida) isolated in the rhizosphere of watermelon plants were tested on their growth promotion and control effect against gummy stem rot of watermelon. Strains, WR8-3 and WR9-16 significantly increased stem length of watermelon, and there was a little increase in leaf area, fresh weight and root length when strains, WR8-3, WR9-9 and WR9-16 were treated. Generally, seed treatment was better for plant growth promotion than the soil drench, but there was no significant difference. Seed treatment and soil drench of each bacterial strain also significantly reduced the mean lesion area (MLA) by gummy stem rot, but there was no significant difference between the two treatments. At initial inoculum densities of each strain ranging from 10$^6\;to\;10^{15}$ cfu/g seed, approximately the same level of disease resistance was induced. But resistance induction was not induced at the initial inoculum density of 10$^3$ cfu/g seed. Resistance was induced by treating the strains, WR9-9, WR9-11 and WR9-16, on all of four watermelon varieties tested, and there was no significant difference in the decrease of gummy stem rot among varieties. Populations of the strains treated initially at log 9-10 cfu/g seed, followed with a rapid decrease from planting day to 1 week after planting, but the population density was maintained above log 5.0 cfu/g soil until 4 weeks after planting. Generally no or very weak in vitro antagonism was observed at the strains treated excepting WR9-11. Rifampicin-resistant bacteria which had been inoculated were not detected in the stems or leaves, which suggesting that the bacterium and the pathogens remained spatially separated during the experiment. This is the first report of rsistance induction in watermelon to gummy stem rot by PGPR strains.
This study investigated the influences of reciprocal peer tutoring strategy and field independencedependence in the instruction enhancing student questions by using weekly reports. Seventh graders (N=152) from a middle school were assigned to WR (weekly reports) and WR-RPT (weekly reports-reciprocal peer tutoring) groups. Students were taught about ‘three states of matter', ‘motion of molecules', and ‘change of states and thermal energy for eighteen class hours and wrote weekly reports six times for the period. The students in the WR-RPT group also conducted reciprocal peer tutoring with the questions of weekly reports which they wrote. The results revealed that the scores of the WR-RPT group were significantly higher than those of the WR group in a conception test regardless of students' field independence-dependence. The field dependent students in the WR-RPT group performed better in an achievement test than those in WR group, while there was no significant difference for the field independent stu dents between the two groups. Additionally, field independent students in each group scored significantly higher than field dependent students in the two tests. Many students, especially having more field independence in the WR-RPT group, perceived WR-RPT positively.
Male rats of Albino strain were divided into four groups, control group, X-irradiated group, WR-2721 treatment group and X-irradiated group treated with WR-2721. The radioprotective effect of treatment with S-2 (3-aminopropylamino)ethylphosphorothioic acid (WR-2721) in the dose of 200mg/kg by intraperitonial injection on rats 20min prior to wholebody X-irradiation (8Gy) was studied. Each group determined serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (ASI), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and contents of serum glucose after 1, 3, 7 and 10 days. The ALP and AST activities of X-irradiated group were significantly decreased (p<0.05) compared with that of control group, but X-irradiated group treated with WR-2721 less decreased those enzyme activities compared with the X-irradiated group. X-irradiated group was significantly increased (p<0.05) ALT and LDH activities compared with that of control group, but X-irradiated group treated with WR-2721 less increased those enzyme activities compared with the X-irradiated group. The concentration of serum glucose of X-irradiated group was significantly increased (p<0.05) compared with that of control group, but X-irradiated group treated with WR-2721 less increased compared with that of X-irradiated group. It may be considered that WR-2721 provided radioprotective effect of organs of body from X-irradiation.
The plant growth-promoting Pseudomonas strains, WR8-3 (Pseudomonas fluorescens), WR9-11 (Pseudomonas sp.) and WR9-16 (P.putida), which induced resistance systematically in watermelon to gummy stem rot were investigated on their induced systemic resistance(ISR)-related characteristics. The pyoverdine production was repressed in the standard succinate medium by increasing the concentration of $\textrm{FeCL}_3$. But the iron-binding ability on chrome azurol S agar media (CAS) was observed only in the strains, WR8-3 and WR9-16. When the two strains were mutated, the resulting iron-binding siderophore-negative mutants, WR8-3m and WR 9-16m, failed to promote the growth of watermelon and to induce resistance. The strains, WR8-3 and WR 9-16, slightly inhibited the growth of Didymella bryoniae at a low concentration of $\textrm{FeCL}_3$ on Kong's medium B, but not to exert control dffect. The strain WR9-11 showed antagonism in the concentration of $\textrm{FeCL}_3$ from 0 to $1,000\mu\textrm{M}$. When the crude lipoplysaccharide of each strain was treated in the rhizosphere of watermelon, mean lesion area was similar to that of the untreated control. The strains, WR9-11 and WR9-16 produced some level of hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Salicylic acid production was not detected in all of the strains.
The effects of DMDHEU alone and DMDHEU/Fluorochemical(FC) combined treatment on the physical properties of 75%/25% cotton/polyester(CP) blended fabrics were investigated. FC water repellent and DMDHEU durable press finishes were applied in combination to CP fabrics to provide good water repellency as well as great durable press(DP) performance. The physical properties of the fabrics were evaluated by wrinkle recovery angle(WRA), DP performance, contact angle, demand wettability, and water repellency. The durable press/water repellent finished(DP/WR) CP fabrics show considerably improved WRA and DP performance. The DP/WR finishes do not change the water contact angie of polyester fibers significantly, while the DP finishes increase it. Both DP and DP/WR finishes increase the contact angle of cotton fibers. The water uptake amount increases in the following order : DP/WR cotton, DP/WR CP<DP cotton, DP CP < Control CP, Control cotton. The water uptake amount increases in the following order DP/WR CP, DP/WR cotton <DP cotton <DP CP<Control CP, Control cotton. Considerable improvements for water repellency are imparted to the CP fabrics treated with DP/WR, and the level of improvement is not significantly different from that of the DP/WR cotton fabrics. These results lead to the conclusion that DP/YVR treatments a single pad bath on CP are effective finishes for improving both DP performance and water repellency.
In order to study effects of ${\ulcorner}Persicae\;Semen{\lrcorner}$ on the hyperlipidemia rats induced by Triton WR, we have made hyperlipidemia rats by administering Triton WR-1339 for 3 days, then have administered. The results were summerized as follows: 1. The total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR-1339 of the sample group were decreased as compared with those of the control group, 2. The HDL-cholesterol by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Trion WR -1339 were increased as compeared those of control group. According to the above results, Persicae Semen showed inhibition on increase of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and phosholipid contents as well as inhibition on decrease of HDL-cholesterol contents in hyperlipidemia.
Raphanus sativus var. hortensis f. raphanistroides Makino (Korean wild radish [WR]) are root vegetables belonging to the Brassicaceae family. These radish species mostly grow in sea areas in Asia, where they have been traditionally used as a medicinal food to treat various diseases. To investigate the effect of WR on neuronal cell death in SH-SY5Y cells, beta-amyloid was used to develop the cell death model. WR attenuated neuronal cell death in SH-SY5Y and regulated the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. WR extract also inhibited acetylcholinesterase inhibitor activity. Additionally, the WR treatment group ameliorated the behavior of the memory-impaired mice in a scopolamine-induced mouse model. In the behavior test, WR treated mice showed shorter escape latency and swimming distance and improved the platform-crossing number and the swimming time within the target quadrant. Furthermore, WR prevented histological loss of neurons in hippocampal CA1 regions induced by scopolamine. This study shows that WR can prevent memory impairment which may be a crucial way for the prevention and treatment of memory dysfunction and neuronal cell death.
