This paper considers a challenging problem: to simultaneously optimize the cost and the quality of service in opaque wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. An optimization problem is proposed that takes the information including network topology, traffic between end nodes, and the target level of congestion at each link/ node in WDM networks. The outputs of this problem include routing, link channel capacities, and the optimum number of switch ports locally added/dropped at all switch nodes. The total network cost is reduced to maintain a minimum congestion level on all links, which provides an efficient trade-off solution for the network design problem. The optimal information is utilized for dynamic traffic in WDM networks, which is shown to achieve the desired performance with the guaranteed quality of service in different networks. It was found that for an average link blocking probability equal to 0.015, the proposed model achieves a net channel gain in terms of wavelength channels (𝛾w) equal to 35.72 %, 39.09 %, and 36.93 % compared to shortest path first routing and 𝛾w equal to 29.41 %, 37.35 %, and 27.47 % compared to alternate routing in three different networks.

Recently, video conferencing, Web-casting service, and network sane service which use multicast-based service are popular in Internet. In order to support the broadband Internet services efficiently, more communication bandwidth are needed. The WDM single-hop broadcast network topology is coming into the spotlight in next-generation access networks area. In this paper, the new multicast scheduling algorithm, PGM, is proposed and is evaluated through the computer simulation. The PGM method shows the better performance comparing with existing multicast scheduling algorithm.
In this letter, a new sharing mechanism, SRLG sharing, is proposed, which allows the links of the same shared risk link group (SRLG) in a primary light tree to share protections in WDM optical networks. In previous studies, how to share spare resources with SRLG constraints has not been studied in multicast optical networks. In this letter, considering SRLG sharing, we propose a novel algorithm -multicast with SRLG sharing (MSS)- to establish a protection light tree. Finally, the algorithm MSS and the algorithm multicast with no SRLG sharing (MNSS) are compared through a simulation to show that our new sharing scheme of SRLG sharing is more efficient than that of no SRLG sharing in terms of spare resource utilization and blocking probability.

A single fiber failure in mesh-based WDM networks may result in the loss of a large number of data. To remedy this problem, an efficient restoration algorithm for a single fiber failure in the mesh- based WDM network is necessary. We propose a new algorithm for restoration scheme in WDM networks and compare it with previous schemes. Path restoration and link restoration are two representative restoration schemes which deal with only a single link failure. In this paper, we propose two kinds of efficient restoration scheme. In the proposed schemes the restoration path for each link failure is not secured. The mesh network is decomposed into a number of small loops. In one algorithm, any link failure in a certain loop is regarded as the failure of the loop and the restoration lightpath is selected by detouring the failed loop. In another scheme any link failure in a certain loop is restored within the loop. We compare performance of the proposed schemes with conventional path restoration scheme and link restoration scheme. Simulation results show that CPU time in the proposed schemes decreases compared with that in path restoration scheme and link restoration scheme, although total wavelength mileage usage increases by 10% to 50%.

The recent explosion in the Internet applications, Internet. host number and the traffic in the IP backbone network is posing new challenges for transport network. This requires a high-speed IP backbone network that has a substantially higher bandwidth than the one offered by current networks, which prompts the development of all-optical network. To obtain optical network utilization gains, we need a software which establishs logical topology to make possible the efficient use or physical topology, and control the optical network in combination with the IP layer routing protocols. Finally, the logical topology is required higher efficient than physical topology. For this an efficient algorithm for the routing and wavelength assignment(RWA) in the WDM all-optical network is necessary. In this paper, two kinds of heuristic algorithms to establish logical topology for WDM networks and arc applied to the design of logical topology of domestic backbone network. These algorithms are found to work quite well and they arc compared with each other in terms of blocking rate, etc.

We design a reconfigurable optical node for metropolitan WDM networks, and numerically study the capability of the node in the optical signal level. Unlike a long-haul WDM system, major limitations of metropolitan WDM systems are power loss, fiber dispersion and optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) degradation due to EDFAs. Therefore, we include the behaviors of transmitter and receiver, and fiber, EDFAs, and optical filters(MUX/DeMux) in numerical simulations with varying parameters over wide range. From simulation results, we can identify the maximum span numbers for OC-48 and OC-192 to achieve $BER<10^{-12}$ using the node structure at various received powers and residual dispersions.
In this paper, we investigate survivability in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks and propose a new algorithm called improved shared-path protection (ISPP) to completely tolerate the double-link failures. Compared with previous algorithms for protecting double-link failures, i.e., shared-path protection (SPP) and shared-link protection (SLP), the advantage of ISPP is to allow primary paths and backup paths to share the mixed wavelength-links based on the proposed new rules in which some primary wavelength-links can be changed to mixed wavelength-links, which can be shared by primary paths and backup paths. In addition, some mixed wavelength-links also can be shared by different backup paths for saving resources. Simulation results show that ISPP algorithm performs better in resource utilization ratio and blocking probability than conventional SPP and SLP algorithms.
The WDM/SCM-FTTH is an advanced optical access Network that can efficiently support various kinds of access network requirements using the WDM and SCM technologies in the near future. In this paper, we propose new network structures of the FTTH(Fiber To The Home) in the WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and WDM/SCM(Sub-Carrier Multiplexing) FTTH, and evaluate its performance with simulation results for the optical characteristics of the network and the dynamic allocation of bandwidth on demand of the users.
The capacity of backbone networks has largely kept pace with the tremendous of growth of Internet traffic. But there has been little progress in the access networks. In this paper, we introduce the access network that is able to offers high bandwidth and its simple protocol. The network architecture is basically multiple ring and use WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing), SCM (SubCarrier Multiplexing), and static WADM (Wavelenth Add/Drop Multiplexer) for simplicity, low cost, and offering high bandwidth.
WDM is a very promisinig technique for the realization of future All-Optical networks. WDM gives an advantage of high rate transmission without delay for Electronic/optical conversion. But the available number of wavelengths is limited by technical restriction. so the efficient optical path routing and wavelength assignment is needed. this paper is concerned with the efficient design of WDM optical transport networks. RWA assumes that the connection demands between node pairs are given. the objective of RWA is to minimize the number of wavelengths. these design consider the static routing and wavelength assignment in the network of arbitrary topology. To solve these problems, this paper proposes some heuristic algorithms.
