WCU 사업에 초빙된 외국 과학자들의 사업 만족도와 정책적 시사점에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Perception of Invited Foreign Scientists of World Class University Project and Policy Implications)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of invited foreign scientists about the actual conditions and status of operating World Class University(WCU) project in Korea. Most of them participated in the project are to promote joint research and exchange innovative ideas internationally as well as to develop their own research. Overall, they seemed to be content with the current status and operation of WCU project. They estimated the level of research universities that they are involved in positively, and also keep a positive view of their future. However, they seemed to experience some difficulties in the operation WCU project, stemming from rigid government regulations and quantity-driven evaluation mechanism. For the future, foreign scientists pointed encouraging students' research self-efficacy and research capability through frequent and direct training and interaction between faculty and students is one of the foremost tasks for the Korean research universities to become World Class Universities.

  • 이 연구에서는 사교육 시간과 교과별 학습동기 및 인지·행동전략으로 이루어진 학습전략 사용과의 구조적 관계를 파악하고, 궁극적으로 사교육이 학업성취도를 어떻게 예측하는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 2005년 당시 중학교 1학년을 대상으로 실시된 한국교육종단연구(KELS 2005)의 1-2차년도 자료를 활용하여 구조방정식모형을 통해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 사교육이 학습동기와 학습전략의 사용에 도움을 준다는 증거는 찾을 수 없었으며, 학업성취도 역시 영어와 수학교과에 한해서만 통계적으로 미미한 수준에서 사교육과 정적인 관계를 보였다. 학업성취도 향상에는 사교육보다 오히려 학습동기와 학습전략이 더욱 중요한 역할을 담당하는 것으로 나타났다.

양식 쏘가리에서 Atypical Aeromonas Salmonicida의 발병 (Occurrence of Atypical Aeromonas Salmonicida in Mandarin Fish (SSOGARI: Korean Name) Siniperca Scherzeri)

  • 경남 산청지방에서 쏘가리를 양식하던 어장에서 대량폐사가 발생하였다. 주요 증상으로 전신 피부에서 궤양이 진행되었고 조직학적으로는 주요 실질 장기에서 세균의 집락과 주변부위로 염증 및 괴사가 관찰되었다. 분리된 세균을 API 20E 및 API 20NE를 이용하여 생화학적 검사를 실시한 결과 Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (typical A. salmonicida)로 진단할 수 있었다. 그러나 atypical A. salmonicida와 typical A. salmonicida로 구분할 수 있는 PCR 기법을 실시한 결과, 본 세균은 atypical A. salmonicida임을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 우리나라 쏘가리에서 A. salmonicida로 인한 발병의 최초 보고임과 동시에, A. salmonicida의 정확한 진단을 위해선 생화학적 검사가 아닌 PCR 검사를 이용한 진단을 실시해야 함을 제시하였다.

대학원 재정지원사업의 효과에 관한 추론적 연구: 세계수준의 연구중심대학(WCU) 육성사업 사례 (An Inferential Study on the Effect of a Graduate School Funding Project: Case of World Class University Project's Improving Effect of World University Rankings)

  • The purpose of this study is to infer how is the effect of a governmental funding project to graduate schools by taking an example of World Class University Project's potential impact on the change of world university rankings in an international university ranking survey. Systematic results show that WCU contributes to improving academic peer reviews for both individual and institutional standings and discipline-based rankings. The potential effect of improving world rankings of participating universities could be ascribed to relatively higher weight of the survey to international peer review and invitation of world class scholars to the participating universities, which is a core device of the project. This implies a need to affirmatively utilize WCU foreign scholars over the course of facilitating international academic networking. The results should also be taken into consideration by universities and the government when developing evaluation systems and restructuring the project.

The Impact of Government Support of Graduate Schools on the Research Productivity of Professors and Students

  • This paper examines the effects of major funding projects for graduate education in Korea, specifically the BK21 and the WCU programs, on the research productivity of professors and young researchers. We apply the standard DID method, which compares the increase in research outputs as measured by papers per year between groups before and during the project period. The DID estimates show that the effects are quite different for different fields, but they mostly indicate that the BK21 project is more effective in terms of the research productivity of the participating professors, especially those who study science and engineering areas. With regard to the productivity of graduate students, the results show that there was an increase in the research productivity of locally educated Korean doctoral degree holders after the graduate funding programs, mainly in natural science and engineering fields.
