In rock drilling, the most important characteristic to clarify is the wear of the drill bits. The reason that the rock drill bits fail with time is wear. In dry sliding contact adhesive wear deteriorates the materials in contact, quickly, and is the result of shear fracture in the momentary contact joins between the surfaces. This paper aims at presenting an overview of the assessment of WC/Co cemented carbide (CC) tricone bit in rotary drilling. To study wear of these bits, two approaches have been used in this research. Firstly, the new bits were weighted before they mounted on the drill rigs and also after completion their useful life to obtain bit weight loss percentage. The characteristics of the rock types drilled by using such this bit were measured, simultaneously. Alternatively, to measure contact wear, namely, matrix wear a micrometer has been used with a resolution of 0.02 mm at different direction on the tricone bits. Equivalent quartz content (EQC), net quartz content (QC), muscovite content (Mu), coarseness index (CI) of drill cuttings and compressive strength of rocks (UCS) were obtained along with thin sections to investigate mineralogical properties in detail. The correlation between effective parameters and bit wear were obtained as result of this study. It was observed that UCS shows no significant correlation with bit wear. By increasing CI and cutting size of rocks wear of bit increases.

From the experimental study of Wire-Cut Electric Discharge Machining of STD-11 alloy steel and P-20 tungsten carbide, the characteristics such as hand drum form and discharge gap have been observed and evaluated for various conditions. Hand drum form can be improved when gap have been observed and evaluated for various conditions. Hand drum form can be improved when gap voltage and spark cycle become smaller, thickness become thinner, wire tension become larger and the no of cutting increases. When 60mm thickness tungsten carbide is cut in normal condition, hand drum form becomes larger due to the low conductivity machining allowance become slightly larger when peak discharge current and gap voltage become larger, or wire tension becomes smaller. Under the same condition, machining allowance of tungsten carbide is larger than alloyed steel by 1/100mm.
The characteristics of various important microstructural factors of WC-base hard- metals (cemented carbides) such as the amount of Co metal binder phase, the carbide grain size, the microstructural defects acting as a fracture source, the solid solubility of tungsten in the binder phase affected by the carbon content, the precipitation of $Co_3W$, the domain size of binder phase, the formation of ${\beta}-free$ layer or Co-rich layer and CVD or PVD coated layer, and the effects of these factors on the flexural strength of the hardmetals are reviewed.

Thermally sprayed tungsten carbide-based powder coatings are being widely used for a variety of wear resistance applications. The coating deposited by high velocity processes such as high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying is known to provide improved wear resistant property. In this study, optimal coating process (OCP) is obtained by the study of coating properties such as surface hardness, porosity, surface roughness and microstructure of 9 coatings prepared by Taguchi program for 3 levels of four spray parameters. The Friction and wear behaviors of HVOF WC-CoCr coating prepared by OCP, electrolytic hard chrome (EHC) plating and Inconel718 (In718) are investigated by reciprocating sliding wear test at $25^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$. Friction coefficients (FC) of all of the 3 samples are decreased as increasing sliding surface temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. FC of WC-CoCr decreases as increasing the surface temperature from $0.33{\pm}0.02$ at $25^{\circ}C$ to $0.26{\pm}0.02$ at $450^{\circ}C$, showing the lowest FC among the 3 samples. Wear trace (WT) and wear depth (WD) of WC-CoCr are smaller than those of EHC and In718 both at $25^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$. These show that WC-CoCr is highly recommendable for protective coating on In718 and other metal components.

이 수치들은 순수한 TiC(-21GPa, 260Gpa)보다 눈에 띄게 높아졌다.

This paper describes the wear characteristics of WC-Co cemented carbides machined with Wire-cut or Die-sinking EOM. We prepared the specimens with different grades of grinding to remove the affected layer after the EDM. These specimens were experimented by block-on-cylinder type tribometer. The result indicated that although the hardness of the affected layer was lower than that of the bulk, wear resistance was increased. In order to investigate the cause of the increase in wear resistance of the affected layer, the layer was observed and analyzed by SEM and ESCA. We also discussed the mean free path of Co phase.
In order to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-10 wt% Co insert tool alloy fabricated by PIM (Powder Injection Molding) process, the feedstock of WC-10 wt% and wax used as a kind of binder were mixed together by two blade mixer. After injection molding, the debinding process was carried out by two-steps. First, solvent extraction, in which the binder was eliminated by putting the specimen into normal hexane for 24 hrs at $60^{\circ}C$, and subsequently thermal debinding which was conducted at $260^{\circ}C$ and $480^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs in the mixed gas of $H_2/N_2$, respectively. Meantime, in order to compensate the decarburization due to hydrogen, 1.2~1.8% of carbon was added to ensure the integrity of the phase. Finally, the specimens were sintered in vacuum under different temperatures, and the relative density of 99.8% and hardness of 2100 Hv can be achieved when sintered at $1380^{\circ}C$, even the TRS is lower than the conventional sintering process.

A fundamental study was carried out to develop a process for recycling tungsten and cobalt from WC-Co hardmetal sludge generated in the manufacturing process of hardmetal tools. The complete extraction of cobalt and simultaneous formation of tungstic was achieved by treating the sludge using aqua regia. The effect of aqua regia concentration, reaction temperature and time, pulp density on cobalt leaching and tungstic acid formation was investigated. The complete leaching of cobalt was attained at the optimum conditions: 100 vol.% aqua regia concentration, $100^{\circ}C$ temperature, 60 min. reaction time and 400 g/L pulp density. A complete conversion of tungsten carbide of the sludge to tungstic acid was however, obtained at the pulp densities lower than 150 g/L under the above condition. The progress of reaction during the aqua regia treatment of the sludge was monitored through the XRD phase identification of the residue. The metallic impurities in the tungstic acid so produced could be further removed as insoluble residues by dissolving the tungsten values in ammonia solution. The ammonium paratungstate($(NH_4)_{10}{\cdot}H_2W_{12}O_{42}{\cdot}4H_2O$) of 99.85% purity was prepared from the ammonium polytungstate solution by the evaporation crystallization method.
