  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of submicron WC-Co cemented carbides were investigated in relation to cobalt content. To inhibit the WC grain growth during sintering, VC was added as a inhibitor in each alloy with 3 mass% to the cobalt content. The WC-(5, 8, 10, 15, 20) mass% Co compacts were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in vacuum. Some of WC-(5, 8, 10) mass% Co sintered compacts were HIPed with 120 atm at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The shrinkages of all HIPed alloys were increased without depending on the cobalt contents and the sintered densities of them. The relative densities of the alloys were increased with the cobalt content and HIPing. The less the cobalt content, the larger the WC grain. Many contiguities of WC grains were found in WC-5 mass% Co alloy. The sizes and numbers of pores in the alloys were decreased by HIPing. And also the strength and the hardness of each alloy were increased. The maximum hardness was about 18.95 GPa in the WC-5 mass% Co alloy HIPed and the maximum transverse-rupture strength (T.R.S.) 3.2 GPa in the WC-20 mass% Co alloy sintered.

  • It was attempted to improve the wear resistance of Al alloy under the load condition by making a formation of the thick surface hardening alloy layers. The thick surface hardening alloy layers were formed on 6061 Al alloys overlayed by MIG welding process with WC-12%Co powder addition. Effects of the dispersion of WE-12%Co powders on hardness and wear characteristics of alloys were investigated. The following results were obtained. Most of WE-12%Co powders are dispersed nearly uniform as unmelted particles in the matrix alloy. A part of WC-12%Co powders are melted in the molten pool, and during solidification {TEX}$Al_{9}Co_{2}${/TEX} appeared. With increasing addition of WC-12%Co powders, the hardness and specific wear resistance of the overlay weld alloys increased and reached Hv450 at WC-12%Co powder addition rate of 54g/min. It is considered that excellent wear resistance of the overlayed alloys was due to dispersed WC-12%Co powders and increased 10 times at WC-12%Co powder addition rate of 54 g/min than that of the WC-free overlaying layers.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate polarization characteristics of WC-based alloy coatings in alkaline solution. The coatings were fabricated with WC-CrC-Ni, WC-Co-Cr and WC-Co composite powders by HVOF process. Corrosion tests of coatings and substrate were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 8 and pH 13. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be studied from polarization curve, and corrosion behavior was analyzed by SEM and EDS. WC-Co-Cr coating and WC-CrC-Ni coating showed more favorable anti-corrosion characteristics than WC-Co coating and substrate at solution with pH 8 and pH 13.

  • This paper deals with the machinability based on turning of WC-Co allows with the coated and the sintered diamond tools. The main conclusions obtained are as follows. (1) When machining WC-10%Co alloy, the flank wear of sintered diamond tool increases more largely with the increase of cutting speed in comparison with coated diamond tool. The tool wear decreases with the increase of the grain size and nose radius of sintered diamond tool. (2) When machining WC-20%Co alloy, the tool wear and cutting force decrease with the decrease of rake angle. Their exists a certain cutting speed range to exhibit the smallest tool wear in machining the WC-20%Co alloy, and this critical cutting speed becomes higher by 2 times in the case of coated diamond tool compared with sintered diamond tool. (3) The machinability becomes better with the increase of Co content. The effects of cutting speed and feed rate on the roughness of machined surface become smaller with the increase of Co content.

  • This is about the effects deoxidization, carbonization and alloying preparation on fine grain W, WC, and grade YG8 powder reduced by "yellow tungsten oxide" and "blue tungsten oxide". The result indicates that yellow tungsten has single composition and blue tungsten oxide has complex composition. With this feature, yellow tungsten oxide got better uniformity and concentration distribution on fine particle size W and WC powder than blue tungsten oxide's. The grade alloy YG8 that made of this W or WC powder has uniform alloy construction, concentrated WC grain distribution and better alloy properties.

  • The aim of this study to investigate polarization characteristics of WC-based alloy coatings fabricated by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) process. The coatings were fabricated by HVOF process with WC-CrC-Ni, WC-Co-Cr, WC-Co composite powders. Corrosion tests were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 2 and pH 6. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be analyzed from polarization curve. WC-Co-Cr coating showed more incorrodible characteristics than other coatings at solution pH 2. WC-CrC-Ni coating was more favorable anti-corrosion characteristics than other coatings at solution with pH 6.

  • Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings could be good candidates as solid lubricants for cutting tools in dry machining of aluminum alloy. In this work, DLC thin films were produced as a friction reduction coating for WC-Co insert tip using the plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIED) technique. DLC coatings were also coated on $Al_2O_3$ specimens and high temperature wear tested up to $400^{\circ}C$ in dry air to observe the survivability of the DLC coating in simulated severe cutting conditions using a pin-on-disc tribotester with Hertzian contact stress of 1.3GPa. It showed reduced friction coefficients of minimum 0.02 up to $400^{\circ}C$. And cutting performance of DLC coated WC-Co insert tips to Al 6061 alloy were conducted in a high speed machining center. The main problems of built-up edge formation in aluminum machining are drastically reduced with improved surface roughness. The improvements were mainly related to the low friction coefficient of DLC to Al alloy and the anti-adhesion of Al alloy to WE due to the inertness of DLC.

  • The solubility of Cr in cubic carbides in the systems WC-Co-TaC and WC-Co-ZrC has been determined using equilibrium samples. Thermodynamic calculations were used to design the alloys through extrapolations of Gibbs energy expressions. The alloys were designed to have a microstructure containing the following phases: WC, liquid, $M_7C_3$, graphite and cubic carbide. The alloys were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The present work shows how the Cr solubility depends on which cubic carbide former that is present. The WC-Co-Cr-Zr alloy has no detectable amount of Cr whereas the WC-Co-Cr-Ta alloy has 12% Cr in the cubic carbide.

  • The dispersion of WC grains Into the interior of an eutectic liquid has been studied by superimposing the eutectic WC-85wt.%Co liquid on the top surface of presintered WC-l0wt.%Co alloy compacts. The heavy WC grains diffused into the interior of liquid from the WC-l0wt.%Co compacts. According to increasing the treating temperatures and times, the dispersion distance from WC-l0wt.%Co substrates increased. The fine WC grains diffused into the liquid faster than the coarse WC grains. The high microstructural stability of WC-Co alloys having the heavier WC grains dispersed in a lighter Co-rich liquid was attributed to Brownian motion of WC grains in liquid. The motion of WC grains in the liquid appears to be same with the colloid(the disperse phase) in a dispersing medium. The dihedral angle of 0 degree of WC-Co at. toy seems one of key parameters, which enables the WC-Co alloys to have high structural stability without settling the WC grains during liquid phase sintering.
