  • A computational work of the impulse wave which is discharged from the open end of a pipe is compared to the Lighthill\`s aeroacoustics theory. The second-order total variation diminishing(TVD) scheme is employed to solve the axisymmetric, compressible, unsteady Euler equations. The relationship between the initial compressure wave form and the resulting impulse wave is characterized in terms of the peak pressure. The overpressure, pressure gradient and wavelength of the initial compression wave are changed to investigate the influence of the initial compressure wave form on the peak pressure of impulse wave. The results obtained show that for the initial compression wave of a large wavelength and small pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave depends upon the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave, but for the initial compression wave of a short wavelength and large pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave is almost constant regardless of the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave. The peak pressure of the impulse wave is increased with an increase in the overpressure of the initial compression wave. The results from the numerical ana1ysis are well compared to the results from the aeroacoutics theory with a food agreement.

  • Photodynamic diagnosis(PDD) is a method to diagnose the possibility of cancer, both by the principle that if a photosensitizer is injected into an organic tissue, it is accumulated in the tissue of a malignant tumor selectively after a specific period, and by a comparison of the intensity of the fluorescence of normal tissue with abnormal tissue after investigating the excitation light of a tissue with accumulated photosensitizer. Since the selection of the wavelength band of excitation light has an interrelation with fluorescence generation according to the selection of a photosencitizer, it plays an important role in POD. This study aims at designing and evaluating light source devices that can stably generate light with various kinds of wavelengths In order to make possible PDD using a photosensitizer and diagnosis using auto-fluorescence. The light source device was a Xenon lamp and filter wheel, composed of an optical output control through Iris and filters with several wavelength bands It also makes the inducement of auto-fluorescence possible because it is designed to generate a wavelength band of 380-400. The transmission part of the light source was, developed to enhance the efficiency of light transmission. To evaluate this light source device, the characteristics of the light output and wavelength band were verified. To validate the capability of this device as PDD the detection of auto-fluorescence using mouse was performed.

  • Analyzed is the spectral response profile specification used for the infrared (IR) channels of the meteorological imagers of GOES series geostationary satellites. The variation characteristics of effective wavelength and effective input radiance due to the change of the spectral response function profile within the imager performance specification are analyzed in order to propose how to understand the spectral response specification. As an analysis approach, at first a center symmetrical spectral response function and 4 worst case spectral response functions are selected within the spectral response specification, and then effective wavelength and effective input radiance are calculated for each spectral response function. As a result, the maximum allowable ranges of effective wavelength and effective input radiance are provided per the spectral response specification.

  • We have controlled the graphene surface in two ways to improve the device performance of optoelectronics based on graphene transparent conductive films. We controlled multilayer graphene (MLG) work function and localized surface plasmon resonance wavelength using a silver nanoparticles formed on graphene surface. Graphene substrates were prepared using a chemical vapor deposition and transfer process. Various size of silver nanoparticles were prepared using a thermal evaporator and post annealing process on graphene surface. Silver nanoparticles were confirmed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Work functions of graphene surface with various sizes of Ag nanoparticles were measured using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The result shows that the work functions of MLG could be controlled from 4.39 eV to 4.55 eV by coating different amounts of silver nanoparticles while minimal changes in the sheet resistance and transmittance. Also the Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength was investigated according to various sizes of silver nanoparticles. LSPR wavelength was measured using the absorbance spectrum, and we confirmed that the resonance wavelength could be controlled from 396nm to 425nm according to the size of silver nanoparticles on graphene surface. To confirm improvement of the device performance, we fabricated the organic solar cell based on MLG electrode. The results show that the work function and plasmon resonance wavelength could be controlled to improve the performance of optoelectronics device.

  • In this paper, we propose and describe our implementation of an automatic control system for the center wavelength of a fiber Bragg grating. The proposed system consists of a Fabry-Perot filter and cantilever structure controlled by a step motor interfacing computer. We consider the change of the center wavelength and the reflective spectrum shape for a given FBG according to the translation distance of the push stick and the cantilever thickness variation. The proposed system can control the center wavelength of a FBG with a resolution of 0.01 nm by applying compression or extension to the FBG. The proposed system has characteristics that keep the desired wavelength of the FBG with a variation of environmental conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of wavelength and intensity of light curing units on the curing of composite resin. The wavelength and intensity of nine units were evaluated with Optical Multichannel Analyzer and Radiometer. Two-part split stainless steel mold with a cylindrical hole-3.0mm in diameter, 6.0mm in hgieht-was prepared. After placing a Mylar strip between two parts, 100 specimens were made by inserting each of four composite resins into the mold and irradiating for 20 seconds with five light units alternatively. The curing depths were measured by scraping method and evaluated by two-way ANOVA. And Vicker's hardness measurements were made on the longitudinally sectioned surface at 0.5mm interval. The results were as follows: 1. Visilux 2 showed a narrow spectral band within the effective wavelength in initiating polymerization and the highest intensity. Translux showed the diffuse spectrum of wavelength and the lower light intensity. 2. Visilux 2 showed the highest curing effect in any composite resin and then followed by Optilux, Efos 35, Heliomat and Translux. (p < 0.01) 3. Durafill showed the deepest curing depth in any light unit and then followed by Bisfil M, Silux and Heliosit. (p < 0.01). 4. Maximum hardness values showed 0.1mm and 0.5mm under top surface and then gradually decreased with depth.

  • By using an XPM (Cross Phase Modulation) wavelength converter, an all-optical AND gate, which is one of six fundamental logic gates, has been demonstrated. The wavelengths for probe and pump signals are 1553.8 and 1545 nm, respectively. First, characteristics of the XPM wavelength converter have been studied. When both probe and pump signals are driven by high power, the output power of the XPM wavelength is high. Based on this fact and the experiment, the all-optical AND gate has been porved. Probe and pump signals are transformed to pulse signals by using Mach-Zehnder modulator, which is induced by a pulse generator. Square pulse signals that are similar to the format of NRZ signals have been generated. By coupling two pulse signals into the XPM wavelength converter, AND characteristics in substantiated.

  • In this paper, a path restoration method independent of failure location in all-optical networks is proposed and its wavelength requirements are calculated. In the proposed method, since a single backup wavelength is used for any link failure, a node can consist of only fixed wavelength transmitters, resulting in the levels node cost. Hence, restoration process can be triggered just after the failure detection, if combined with edge-disjoint path restoration method. This feature and the parallel cross-connection message transfer technique proposed in this paper make the restoration process faster. Also, it is shown the wavelength requirements in the proposed method are similar to the ones in the method using tunable backup wavelength, resulting in little increment for transmission cost.

  • In this paper, we addressed the problem of upstream bandwidth in EPONs. We presented a wavelength division EPON supporting QoS in the differentiated services framework. It was shown that the bandwidth allocation by priority scheduling, under our assumptions for traffic behavior, will result in an unexpected behavior for high priority class and we suggested the use of weighted priority scheduling to alleviate this problem. Our wavelength division EPON supporting QoS allocates effectively and fairly bandwidths and wavelengths between ONUs in the differentiated services framework. Moreover, we showed better performance in terms of average and maximum end-to-end delay, as well as network throughput, utilization compared with some other algorithms. We used simulation experiments to study the performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed network and algorithm.

  • We designed a wavelength interrogation-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor to detect avian influenza DNA (AI-DNA). Hybridization reactions between target AI-DNA probes and capture probes immobilized on a gold surface were monitored quantitatively by measuring the resonance wavelength in the visible waveband. The experimental results were consistent with numerical calculations. Although the SPR detection technique does not require the DNA to be labeled, we also evaluated fluorescently-labeled targets to verify the hybridization behavior of the AI-DNA. Changes in resonance were found to be linearly proportional to the amount of bound analyte. A wavelength interrogation-type SPR biosensor can be used for rapid measurement and high-throughput detection of highly pathogenic AI viruses.
