Due to less turbulence and no land limitation, offshore wind energy gets more attention than onshore. Jacket structure is regarded as a suitable solution for the water depth ranging from 30 to 80 meters. In general, joint stress concentration of jacket support structures affects their fatigue life. Nowadays, most jacket structures for offshore wind turbines have tubular X-joint between legs. In this paper, a study on X-joint stress concentration of offshore wind turbine jacket structure is performed by using 50m water depth model. Stress of X-joint on offshore environmental conditions are discussed.

The ASME B3l.4〔1〕and B3l.8 〔2〕codes use the thin wall formula to predict hoop stress in a pipe. To account for the external pressure, the above codes simply subtract the external pressure from the internal pressure. The thin wall formula using this differential pressure does not give the same hoop stress as the thick wall formula. This paper proposes an improved equation to predict pipe hoop stress subjected to both internal and external pressure. Compared to the conventional thin wall formula, the improved formula has additional terms, which improve the agreement with the thick wall formula and account for external pressure. The improved formula is less conservative than the conventional thin wall formula, but slightly more conservative than the thick wall formula. The formula is simpler and easier to use than the thick wall formula and will save pipe material cost as well as installation cost compared to using the conventional thin wall formula. The savings will increase as the water depth increases.

The characteristics and prediction model for the shear strength of unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the net normal stress on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests and SWCC tests were carried out varying the net normal stress, and the experimental data for unsaturated shear strength tests were compared with predicted shear strength envelopes using existing prediction models. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the net normal stress. Therefore, to achieve a truly descriptive shear strength envelope for unsaturated soils, tile effect of the normal stress on the contribution of matric suction to the shear strength has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, a modified prediction model for the unsaturated shear strength was proposed.
The primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of dissimilar metal weld based on Alloy 82/182 is one of major issues in material degradation of nuclear components. It is well known that the crack initiation and growth due to PWSCC is influenced by material's susceptibility to PWSCC and distribution of welding residual stress. Therefore, modeling the welding residual stress is of interest in understanding crack formation and growth in dissimilar metal weld. Currently in Korea, a numerical round robin study is undertaken to provide guidance on the welding residual stress analysis of dissimilar metal weld. As a part of this effort, the present paper investigates distribution of welding resisual stress of a ferritic low alloy steel nozzle with dissimilar metal weld using Alloy 82/182. Two-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analyses are carried out to simulate multi-pass welding process on the basis of the detailed design and fabrication data. The present results are compared with those from other participants, and more works incorporating physical measurements are going to be performed to quantify the uncertainties relating to modelling assumptions.

In this study, we investigated the effects of light spectra on physiology stress and DNA damage in juvenile rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) using light-emitting diodes (LEDs; green, 520 nm; red, 630 nm) at two intensities (0.25 and $0.5W/m^2$ ) with application of thermal stress (25 and $30^{\circ}C$). We measured the mRNA expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and the levels of plasma cortisol, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT), and alanine aminotransferase (AlaAT). Additionally, DNA damage was measured using comet assays. Our findings showed that HSP70 mRNA expression and plasma cortisol, glucose, AspAT, and AlaAT levels were significantly higher after exposure to high temperatures and were significantly lower after exposure to green LED light. Thus, although high water temperatures induced stress in juvenile rock bream, green LED light inhibited stress. In particular, green LED light reduced stress and DNA damage to a greater degree than other light sources.

In order to understand the stress responses, we measured the concentration of stress hormones by using the fresh feces of wild otters in the Gwangju stream and Seomjin river during summer and winter in 2018. We compared seasonal and regional number of spraints (=otters' feces), temperature, altitude, water width, land cover, and water quality with stress hormones. The stress hormone levels were higher in summer than in winter, and significantly different to season and region. In addition, the number of feces were different according to the season and region, and showed a negative correlation with stress hormone. This study suggested assessing stress hormones as another promising method for the analysis of status of wild otters and it will contribute to establish the management and conservation policy, especially in urban area.
The experiment which imposed the water stress to tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) plant was carried at the late of maximum growth period. In order to know the influence of drought stress on the growth and developmemt of tobacco leaves of different position and to elucidate the physiological response of plant to various soil water content, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential were measured. The drought stress at the maximum growth period negatively affected to the overall growth characteristics of shoot. The response of the growth was small at the middle and the lower leaves, and great at the upper leaves. The relative water content of upper, middle, and lower leaves at the fifth day after treatment were 74, 64, and 59%, respectively, as soil water content was reduced by 4.3%. This suggested that the wilting point of tobacco leaf was about 75%. The leaf water potential was -0.58 MPa in control and dropped to -1.20 MPa at the fifth day after treatment. This indicated that wilting of leaf may occur at the condition in which the difference of water potential between treatment and control, well watered, was greater than about 20%. Stomatal conductance at the fifth day after treatment dropped from 12 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ to 0.8 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ in the middle and the upper leaves. Stomatal conductance of lower leaves already matured were not affected highly by drought stress at the maximum growth period, but maturing leaves, middle and upper leaves, were highly affected by limitation of soil water.
Within their natural habitat, crops are often subjected to drought and heat stress, which suppress crop growth and decrease crop production. Causing overaccumulation of glycinebetaine (GB) has been used to enhance the crop yield under stress. Here, we investigated the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) photosynthesis to drought, heat stress and their combination with a transgenic wheat line (T6) overaccumulating GB and its wild-type (WT) Shi4185. Drought stress (DS) was imposed by controlling irrigation until the relative water content (RWC) of the flag leaves decreased to between 78 and 82%. Heat stress (HS) was applied by exposing wheat plants to $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. A combination of drought and heat stress was applied by subjecting the drought-stressed plants to a heat stress as above. The results indicated that all stresses decreased photosynthesis, but the combination of drought and heat stress exacerbated the negative effects on photosynthesis more than exposure to drought or heat stress alone. Drought stress decreased the transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs) and intercellular $CO_2$ concentration (Ci), while heat stress increased all of these; the deprivation of water was greater under drought stress than heat stress, but heat stress decreased the antioxidant enzyme activity to a greater extent. Overaccumulated GB could alleviate the decrease of photosynthesis caused by all stresses tested. These suggest that GB induces an increase of osmotic adjustments for drought tolerance, while its improvement of the antioxidative defense system including antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants may be more important for heat tolerance.
Background: This study analyzed the physiological adaptations of a woody plant, Vitex rotundifolia, in Goraebul coastal sand dunes from May to September 2022. Environmental factors and physiological of plants growing under field and controlled (pot) conditions were compared. Results: Photosynthesis in plants growing in the coastal sand dunes and pots was the highest in June 2022 and July 2022, respectively. Chlorophyll fluorescence indicated the presence of stress in the coastal sand dune environment. The net photosynthesis rate (PN) and Y(II) were highest in June in the coastal sand dune environment and July in the pot environment. In August and September, Y(NPQ) increased in the plants in the coastal sand dune environment, showing their photoprotective mechanism. Chlorophyll a and b contents in the pot plant leaves were higher than those in the coastal sand dune plant leaves; however, chlorophyll-a/b ratio was higher in the coastal sand dune plant leaves than in the pot plant leaves, suggesting a relatively high photosynthetic efficiency. Carotenoid content in the coastal sand dune plant leaves was higher in August and September 2022 than that in the pot plant leaves. Leaf water and soluble carbohydrate contents of the coastal sand dune plant leaves decreased in September 2022, leading to rapid leaf abscission. Diurnal variations in photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in both environments showed peak activity at 12:00 hour; however, the coastal sand dune plants had lower growth rates and Y(II) than the pot plants. Plants in the coastal sand dunes had higher leaf water and ion contents, indicating that they adapted to water stress through osmotic adjustments. However, plants growing in the coastal sand dunes exhibited reduced photosynthetic activity and accelerated decline due to seasonal temperature decreases. These findings demonstrate the adaptation mechanisms of V. rotundifolia to water stress, poor soils, and high temperature conditions in coastal sand dunes. Conclusions: The observed variations indicate the responses of the V. rotundifolia to environmental stress, and may reveal its survival strategies and adaptation mechanisms to stress. The results provide insights into the ecophysiological characteristics of V. rotundifolia and a basis for the conservation and restoration of damaged coastal sand dunes.
