Varietal Differences in Agronomic Characters under Different Altitudinal Locations with Equal Latitude in Paddy Rice (동일위도상 표고의 차이에 따른 수도품종의 수량형질변이)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the variations in morphological traits, yield and yield-related components of rice cultivars exposed to different weather conditions by growing at the locations with different altitude but with equal latitude. Three Japonica varieties (Daegoldo, Jinheung, Shin #2) and three Tongil type semi-dwarf varieties(Josaengtongil, Suweon 287, wx 817-65-2-3) were seeded at Suweon on April 21 and transplanted at Suweon ($127^{\circ}$ N37 20', altitude 37m) and Jechun ($128.2^{\circ}$, N37 10', altitude 280-300m) on June 1 with the spacing of 30 $\times$ 15 em. The morphological traits, yield and yield-related components were measured. Culm length, paincle length and 1000-grain weight showed a little increase in Japonica varieties in Jechun as compared to those in Suweon and vice versa in semi-dwarf varieties, showing no significant differences. Number of panicles, per hill and number of spikelets per panicle among yield-related components showed remarkable increase in all varieties in Jechun as compared to those in 'Suweon but such inter-locational differences differed with varieties within varietal group and between varietal groups. On the contrary, grain fertility was higher in Suweon than that in Jechun and in Japonica varieties than that in semi-dwarf varieites , showing greater inter-locational difference in semi-dwarf varieties. Among Japonica varieties Jinheung and Shin #2 showed remarkable increase in yield in Jechun as compared to that in Suweon but in semidwarf varieties it was just the opposite. The importance of each of the yield-related component contributing to yield showed similar tendency 'regardless of locations in Japonica varieties. However, it was evidently different between locations in semidwarf varieties, where number of spikelets per panicle showed greatest direct effect on yield in Suweon but in Jechun so did grain fertility followed by the number of spikelets per panicle.

Thermal Conductivities of Grain (곡물(糓物)의 열전도계수(熱傳導係數)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The thermal conductivies of grain are influenced by many physical factors such as' initial temperature, moisture content, composition, bulk density or porosity of grain. However, not only few researchers considered all these factors in determining thermal conductivities of grain but also many researchers considered only moisture content as a major effective factor on the thermal conductivity. This study was conducted to experimentally determine the thermal conductivities of rough rice (3 Japonica-type, 3 Indica-type) and barley(covered, naked) as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity of grain, and to investigate the effect of those physical factors on the thermal conductivities of grain. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The average time correction value for this experimental apparatus was 7 sec, which. was insignificant to the calculated thermal conductivity. The resulting conductivity for considering time correction value was only 4.9 percent higher than that calculated by the non-corrected equation. 2. The thermal conductivity was in the range of 0.1208~0.2058W/$m^{\circ}K$ for naked barley, 0.1138~0.1724W/$m^{\circ}K$ for covered barley, 0.0912~0.1864W/$m^{\circ}K$ for Japonica-type rice and 0.086~0.1774W/$m^{\circ}K$ for Indica-type rice. 3. The thermal conductivities of grain increased with initial temperature and moisture content of grain but decreased with porosity of grain. 4. The regression equations of the thermal conductivity of each grain were determined as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity. The regression equations of the thermal conductivity of both Japonica-type and Indica-type rough rice were also determined.

Dietary Supplementation of Sea Tangle (Laminaria japonica) Improves Blood Glucose and Lipid Metabolism in the Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) on the blood glucose and lipid metabolism in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups fed control, sea tangle powder (15%, w/w), or sea tangle water extract (4%, w/w) diet. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, i.p.) in citrate buffer. The animals were fed each of the experimental diet for 13 weeks. Serum insulin was increased by dietary supplementation of sea tangle in diabetic rats. Dietary sea tangle reduced blood glucose level of diabetic rats compared to the diabetic rats fed control diet. Dietary sea tangle also reduced the serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, and triglyceride in the diabetic rats. While hepatic lipids were reduced, fecal excretion of lipids was increased by supplementation with dietary sea tangle in the diabetic rats. These results indicate that dietary sea tangle decreased blood glucose and improved lipid metabolism in STZ-induced diabetic rats and this effect might be exerted by increases in serum insulin and fecal excretion of lipids.

Safety and Effects on Lipid Parameters of Rubus coreanus and Atractylodes japonica in Ovariectomized Rats

  • Defatted methanol extracts of the medicinal plants, Rubus coreanus Miq. (RC) and Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi (AJ) were added at the levels of 0.1, 0.5, or $2\%$ (w/w) to high cholesterol diets and fed to ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley female rats, weighing 212.6 $\pm$ 1.8 g for four weeks. Weight gains were lower in RC and AJ groups than the control group, but there were no changes in uterus weights. Serum levels of triglyceride decreased by 20-$27\%$ in the experimental groups fed $0.1\%$ of each extract (O.1RC and O.1AJ), compared with that of control (Ovx). Serum cholesterol levels were not changed in the RC groups but increased in the group fed $2\%$ of the AJ extract. Liver levels of cholesterol and triglyceride were reduced in both the RC and AJ groups. Microscopic observation revealed that there were no morphological alterations in liver, lung, heart, spleen and kidney tissues of the experimental groups. Plasma levels of albumin, BUN, creatinine, sodium, potassium and phosphate in the IRC and AJ groups were in normal ranges. Serum GOT and GPT activities were, however, higher in the 2.0AJ than Ovx group. These results suggest that the extracts of the Rubus coreanus Miq. and Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi at dietary levels as low as $0.1\%$ may be utilized as hypotriglyceridemic ingredients for functional foods.

Determination of Critical Nitrogen Concentration and Dilution Curve for Rice Growth

  • Critical nitrogen concentration (Nc), which is defined as the minimum % N in shoots required to maintain the maximum growth rate of top dry weight (W) at any time, was determined for rice plant. Using two rice varietal groups, japonica varieties and an indica $\times$ japonica "Dasanbyeo", 18 data points fulfilling the statistical criteria for determining Nc were obtained through eight N-fertilization experiments over two years at Suwon (37$^{\circ}$16'N), Korea. Nc dilution curve for each variety was obtained by fitting the Nc-W relationship to power function. However, The critical nitrogen curves for the two variety groups were not different statistically. Thus, a Nc dilution curve was fitted for the Nc data points pooled over the two variety groups and proposed in rice as: Nc=4.08, where W<1.73 t h $a^{-1}$ , Nc=5.197 $W^{0.425}$3/ ($R^2$=0.964), where 1.73 t h $a^{-1}$ <W<12 t h $a^{-l}$. The Nc for W<1.73 t h $a^{-l}$ were estimated as a constant value of 4.08%, the mean value of the maximum N concentration for N-limiting condition and the minimum N concentration for N non-limiting condition. The model for Nc is applicable to diagnosing the nitrogen nutrition status during the rice growth period from emergence to heading stage. The Nc curve well discriminated the 144 data points between the N limiting and the N non-limiting groups regardless of varieties, cultural methods, and years.-limiting groups regardless of varieties, cultural methods, and years.

  • A study of benthic populations on a tidal flat near Inchon has revealed the presence of Amphictene japonica (Nilsson) a large pectinariid polychaete worm not previously documented in Korean waters. Near Inchon it is apparently restricted to silty sands or sandy silts along seaward parts of the intertidal flat. In addition to its large size, A. japonica is distinguished from other pectinariids by means of (1) the posterior rim of the cephalic plaque, which bears 20 to 25 marginal denticulations, and (2) the scaphal hooks, which number 19 to 24 on either side.

The Distribution and Feeding Characteristics of Some Dominant Polychaetes in the Continental Shelf of the East Sea, Korea (동해 대륙붕에 분포하는 주요 다모류의 서식지 환경)

  • This study was carried out for appreciable information on the proper habitats and feeding modes of some dominant polychaetes in the continental shelf of the East Sea during April, 1985. Among 95 polychaete species, we select ed 9 dominant species in terms of their occurring frequency, abundance and population density. These are Terebellides stroemi, Chaetozone setosa, Magelona japonica, Ampharete arctica, Aglaophamus sinensis, Nothria holobranchiata, Lumbrineris japonica, Myriochele gracilis, Notoproctus pacificus. Major food item s of these species are centric diatoms and detritus. The feeding modes of the the m are mainly surtace or subsurface deposit feeding, though two specters, M.holobranchiata and L. japonica, could be assumed to be potential carnivores. To a certain degree, most deposit feeders in the coarse sediments showed selectivity in feeding and tube building. The feeding mode, gut content and the tube structure, and the distribution pattern of dominant polychaetes correspond well with the habitat tharacters, e.g.the bottom topography, the source of food and the sediment composition.

Characteristics of Acid-hydrolysis and Ethanol Fermentation of Laminaria japonica (다시마의 산 가수분해와 에탄올 발효 특성)

  • In order to study the utilization of brown seaweed Laminaria japonica as an alternative renewable feedstock for bioethanol production, the properties of acid hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation were investigated. The acid hydrolysis enhanced the final yield of fermentable sugars, which led great increase of ethanol productivity. The maximum yield of reducing sugars reached 135 mg/g-dry Laminaria japonica after 1.0N sulfuric acid-hydrolysis at $130^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ATCC 24858) could ferment $C_6$-sugars like glucose, galactose and mannose into ethanol, but not $C_5$-sugars like arabinose and xylose. Optimal fermentation time varied with sugars; 48 h for glucose, 72 h for galactose, and 96 h for mannose. Nevertheless, the ethanol yield from the hydrolysate reached 242 mg/g-dry Laminaria japonica after fermentation by the S. cerevisiae at $35^{\circ}C$ for 96 h, which corresponds to approximately 4 times more than the theoretical yield from total reducing sugars in the hydrolysates. It indicates that the non-reducing sugars or oligosaccharides dissolved in the hydrolysate played an important role in producing bioethanol. The ethanol concentration linearly increased from 2.4 to 9.2 g/L, while the ethanol yield per dry weight of biomass decreased from 242 to 185 mg/g, with increasing the ratio of biomass to acid solution from 1 to 5% (w/v). The bioethanol yield estimated was approximately 7,400~9,600 kg/ha/year, and indicated that Laminaria japonica is a promissing feedstock for bioethanol production.
