  • It is hard to expect excellent electrical, mechanical and chemical properties from most of the composite materials presently used as insulators due to insufficient wettability property caused by the difference of interfacial properties between the matrix material and the reinforcer. Therefore, various interfacial coupling agents have been developed to improve the interfacial properties of composite materials. But if the wettable coupling agents are used outdoor for a long time, change in quality takes place in the coupling agents themselves, bringing about deterioration of the properties of the composite materials. In this study, glass surface was treated by plasma to examine the effect of dry interface treatment without coupling agent. It was identified that the optimum parameters for the best wettability of the samples at the time of generation of plasma were oxygen atmosphere, 0.1 torr of system pressure, 100 W of discharge power, and 3 minutes of discharge time. Also, the surface resistance rate and dielectric property were improved.

  • Anti-reflection properties of post diffusion doped spin-on source (in-situ AR coating) have been investigated in some detail. A simple experiment for reflectivity study using oblique incidence of light and necessary modification of the theory of minimum reflectivity at oblique incidence has been established. The comparative study of the in-situ AR coating with available spin-on AR film on silicon Solar Cell Surface have been investigated.

  • Poyethylene films can be modified by radiation grafting of N-vinyl pyrollidone using y-radiation. FTIR spectra were used to confirm the modification of PE films. The modified films were activated by two-step and one step methods for electroless Cu plating. Morphology of metallized films has been investigated. Electroless Cu plating onto the modified films depends mainly on the grafting degree and activation type. The conductivity of the metallized films has been investigated.

  • This study deals with the case of a fixed floating structure(FFS) at the mouth of a rectangular harbor under the action of waves represented by the linear wave theory. Modified forms of the mild-slope equation is applied to the propagation of regular wave over constant water depth. The model is extended to include bottom friction and boundary absorption. A hybrid element approximation is used for calculation of linear wave oscillation in and near coastal harbor. Modification of the model was necessary for the FFS. For the conditions tested, the results of laboratory experiments by Ippen and Goda(1963), and Lee (1969) are compared with the calculated one from this model. The cases of flat cylinderical structures, both fixed and floating, were taken to be in an intermediate water depth.

  • In active noise control (ANC) system, the convergence behavior of the Filtered- X Least Mean Square (FXLMS) algorithm may be affected by nonlinear distortion in the secondary path as in the power amplifiers (e.g., saturation), loudspeakers and transducers. This distortion may yields degrading the error reduction performance of the ANC systems. In this paper, the authors of this paper propose a more improved and stable FXLMS algorithm to compensate for the undesirable nonlinearity of the secondary-path, whereby the third-order Volterra model was employed for the identification of the nonlinear secondary-path. In particular, the proposed approach was based on the modification of the conventional FXLMS algorithm. Finally, the simulation results showed that the proposed approach yields better convergence property and more stable performance in the ANC systems.

  • A guitar pickup transforms the vibration of strings to the electric signals, and deliveres them to an amplifier. A piezo pickup has interference problem between strings. The paper aims to improve sound quality for an electro-acoustic guitar through the finite element analysis. Firstly the conventional pickup is modeled and analyzed with a commercial program called ANSYS. It is obvious that there exists interference between the strings. The structural modification of the pickup is performed, based on the beam theory The modified structures are suggested, modeled and analyzed. Then the result are compared with those in the conventional pickup. It can be concluded that the interferences with the modified structures are much less than those with the conventional structure.

  • A design modification was made on the 9-th stage wheel dovetail of a high-intermodiate pressure (HIP) turbine rotor for a fossil power plant that necessitates the use of new long-shank buckets for the row. A bucket vibration test is necessary to verify that the new 9-th stage buckets have adequate frequency margin from a nozzle passing frequency when running at speed. A finite element analysis (FEA) has been performed using a commercial S/W to approximately estimate bucket natural frequencies, and thus to help the vibration test. A row of the new buckets has been assembled on the HIP rotor for the vibration tests using dynamic balancing facilities. The tests have been done during deceleration run with air excitation. The test results are compared with the calculation using our empirical formula, and show that the modified design meets the frequency-margin requirements.

  • The poly(methylsilene) (1) was modified with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalyst and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) catalyst, producing the highly cross-linked isoluble polymer and the lowly cross-linked soluble polymer, respectively. An interrelationship between molecular weight and percent ceramic residue yield with metal within the respective group was not found. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weight and lower percent ceramic residue yield than the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts do. The catalytic activity of group 4 metallocene combinations appears to be higher at ∼100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls. The pyrolysis of the modified 1 yielded SiC ceramic.
