A Case of Pemphigus vulgaris with Generalized Pruritus (전신소양감을 동반한 심상성 천포창 치험 1례)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is to know the effect of Korean medical treatments on pemphigus vulgaris with generalized pruritus. Methods : We treated a 44-years-old woman patient with pemphigus vulgaris on the whole body with Korean medicine. After Korean medical treatment for 17 weeks, we measured the extinction of blisters and decrease of pruritus. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusions : The symptoms of pemphigus vulgaris were significantly improved. The blisters and itching were decreased and skin damages were almost recovered. Thus Korean medical treatments are effective on pemphigus vulgaris.

  • Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin disease of the pilose-baceous unit. It appears as lesions consisting of comedones, papules, pustules, and nodules of varying shapes and severity. In general, the first-line treatment for acne vulgaris includes topical and oral medication. Recently, various physical modalities have also been investigated. The use of laser therapy is steadily increasing because of its fewer side effects, short procedure time, and rapid results. In particular, laser therapy assisted with carbon suspension application is effective for acne vulgaris but may sometimes result in discomfort due to odor and dust formation during the procedure. Herein, we report that acne vulgaris and enlarged facial pores can be safely and effectively treated with laser therapy assisted with diamond particle suspension and gold microparticle application, which can address the discomfort caused by the carbon suspension application.

The first report Prunella pinnatifida Benth. (Labiatae) in Korea (한국 꿀풀과 미기록 식물: 갈래꿀풀)

  • Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai, P. vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald, and P. vulgaris var. albiflora Nakai have been reported as infrageneric taxa of Prunella L. in Korea. I found many samples of P. pinnatifida Pers. in the previously collected herbarium sheets in several major herbaria in Korea and confirmed its distribution again in Jaeun Island, Chonnam Province with the information from those herbarium sheets. P. pinnatifida Pers. has deeply lobed leaves in contrast to entire or barely dentate leaves of P. vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai, P. vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald, and P. vulgaris var. albiflora Nakai. I first report the distribution of this taxon in Korea and give it the Korean name Gal-re-kkul-pul. I provide description, illustrations, and an infrageneric key to identification of the other taxa of Prunella in Korea, and discuss some taxonomic problems of this taxon.

Inhibitory Effects of Iranian Thymus vulgaris Extracts on in Vitro Growth of Entamoeba histolytica

  • One of the most common drugs used against a wide variety of anaerobic protozoan parasites is metronidazole. However, this drug is mutagenic for bacteria and is a potent carcinogen for rodents. Thymus vulgaris is used for cough suppression and relief of dyspepsia. Also it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The aim of this study was to investigate antiamebic effect of Thymus vulgaris against Entamoeba histolytica in comparison with metronidazole. One hundred gram air-dried T. vulgaris plant was obtained and macerated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 14 days using n-hexane and a mixture of ethanol and water. For essential oil isolation T. vulgaris was subjected to hydrodistillation using a clevenger-type apparatus for 3 hr. E. histolytica, HM-1: IMSS strain was used in all experiments. It was found that the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for T. vulgaris hydroalcoholic, hexanic extracts, and the essential oil after 24 hr was 4 mg/mL, 4 mg/mL, and 0.7 mg/mL, respectively. After 48 hr the MIC for T. vulgaris hydroalcoholic and hexanic extracts was 3 and 3 mg/mL, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Iranian T. vulgaris is effective against the trophozoites of E. histolytica.

The protective effect of Prunella vulgaris ethanol extract against vascular inflammation in TNF-α-stimulated human aortic smooth muscle cells

  • Atherosclerosis, which manifests as acute coronary syndrome, stroke, and peripheral arterial diseases, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall. Prunella vulgaris, a perennial herb with a worldwide distribution, has been used as a traditional medicine in inflammatory disease. Here, we investigated the effects of P. vulgaris ethanol extract on TNF-${\alpha}$-induced inflammatory responses in human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs). We found that P. vulgaris ethanol extract inhibited adhesion of monocyte/macrophage-like THP-1 cells to activated HASMCs. It also decreased expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, E-selectin and ROS, No production in TNF-${\alpha}$-induced HASMCs and reduced NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. Furthermore, P. vulgaris extract suppressed TNF-${\alpha}$-induced phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). These results demonstrate that P. vulgaris possesses anti-inflammatory properties and can regulate TNF-${\alpha}$-induced expression of adhesion molecules by inhibiting the p38 MAPK/ERK signaling pathway.

Six Cases of Acne Vulgaris Treated by Sasang Constitutional Treatment with Herbal Steam Therapy (사상체질처방과 훈증요법을 병행한 여드름 치험 6례)

  • Objectives : This study was to performed to investigate the effect of herbal steam therapy on acne vulgaris. Methods : 6 patients with acne vulgaris were treated with korean medicine therapy (herbal medicine and acupunture) including herbal steam therapy. We evaluated the effect by Korean Acne Grading System(KAGS) and Pictures. Results : After treatment, the KAGS Grade of all patients treated with korean medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy is 1. Based on this, we could find that korean medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy is effective and available to ameliorate for the symptoms of acne vulgaris. Conclusions : This clinical cases study shows us that korean medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy seem to be effective to improve symptoms of acne vulgaris. Further studies will be needed to identify herbal steam therapy is beneficial to acne vulgaris.

Effect of Photo Bioreactor with Optical Panel on the Growth Rate of Chlorella vulgaris (도광판 삽입 반응기가 Chlorella vulgaris 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of optical panel (OP) on the growth rate of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). The size of C. vulgaris (FC-16) was 3~$8{\mu}m$, having round in shape. The cells of C. vulgaris was cultured in the Jaworski's Medium with deionized water at $22^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. For this experiment, three light samples were prepared to evaluate the efficiency of OP on the growth rate of C. vulgaris; OP with LED (Light Emitting Diode) (Run 1), Fluorescent light (Run 2) and LED (Run 3). The specific growth rate of C. vulgaris for Run 1 was found to be 14 times and 5 times faster than Run 2 and Run 3, respectively. In addition, the average biomass of C. vulgaris for Run 1 was measured 11.79 g/L in 11 days. This means that the biomass for Run 1 was reached 30 times and 6.5 times higher than Run 2 and Run 3, respectively. This may be due to the fact the OP was increased the light uniformity and hindered the shading effects in photobioreactor. Therefore, the growth rate of biomass in photobioreactor with OP is compared better than the without OP used other photobioreactor.

Inhibitory Effects of Ursolic Acid from Prunella Vulgaris on Osteoclast Differentiation (하고초(夏枯草)에서 추출한 Ursolic acid의 파골세포 분화 억제 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effect of ursolic acid from Prunella vulgaris on osteoclast differentiation. Methods: MTT-assay was performed to estimate cytotoxicity of ursolic acid from Prunella vulgaris in BMMs stimulated with M-CSF. TRAP staining, TRAP activity and Real-time PCR were performed to know the inhibitory effect on osteoclast differentiation. Actin ring formation were analysed to observe the effect of ursolic acid from Prunella vulgaris. Results: Ursolic acid from Prunella vulgaris has no cytotoxicity at the concentration of $1{\mu}g/ml$ or lower. Ursolic acid decreased the number of TRAP positive cells and the expression of NFATc1 gene, c-Fos gene, TRAP and OSCAR in BMMs stimulated with RANKL. Ursolic acid restrained the formation of actin ring. Ursolic acid inhibited NF-${\kappa}B$ activity by inducing degradation of p-$IkB{\alpha}$. Conclusions: Ursolic acid from Prunella vulgaris has the inhibitory effect of osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. Futher studies are needed to treat osteoporosis by usolic acid from Prunella vulgaris.

Glucosyltransferase Inhibition of Streptococcus mutans by Dioscorea batatas and Prunella vulgaris extract (마와 꿀풀 추출물에 의한 Streptococcus mutans의 산 생성 및 Glucosyltransferase 저해효과)

  • Streptococcus mutans is the major causative factor in dental caries and has been known to induce dental caries by the process of initial attachment proliferation and acid production. The pH of Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) media and glucosyltransferase(GTase) activity were determined to evaluate the anticariogenic activity of Dioscorea batatas and Prunella vulgaris hexane fraction. In the experiment of hexane fraction of Dioscorea batatas, the relative growth ratio(RGR) against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) was determined as 93% in concentration of 0.125 mg/ml, 100% in 0.25 mg/ml. The hexane fraction of Prunella vulgaris revealed relative growth ratio(RGR) against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) as 86% in concentration of 0.25 mg/ml, 100% in 0.5 mg/ml. The relative growth ratio(RGR) against of hexane fraction were determined as 92% in concentration of 0.25 mg/ml, 100% in 0.5 mg/ml. The acidities were pH 7.2 on Dioscorea batatas and 7.0 on Prunella vulgaris in 2.0 mg/ml in contrast to pH 5.6 on Dioscorea batatas and 5.2 on Prunella vulgaris in control. The inhibitory effect to activity revealed 35% on Dioscorea batatas and 25% on Prunella vulgaris in 2.0 mg/ml. The inhibitory effect of Dioscorea batatas was more potent than Prunella vulgaris.

Effect of Nano Bubble Oxygen and Hydrogen Water on Microalgae (나노기포 산소수 및 수소수가 미세조류 배양에 미치는 영향)

  • Microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata (N. oculta) and Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) are important sources for biodisel because of the high content of neutral lipids. Stable nano bubble is maintained for a long time and therefore it is possible for use in biotechnology. In this study, effects of nano bubble oxygen or hydrogen water on the microalgae growth were characterized. The cell growth in nano bubble water was similar to that of control, and the total lipid content was rather low. But, chlorophyll content of N. oculata grown in nanno bubble oxygen and hydrogen water increased 54% and 30%, and increased 59%, 39% in C. vulgaris. Carotenoid content also increased 21%, 25% in N. oculata and 49%, 29% in C. vulgaris grown in nano bubble oxygen and hydrogen water. From these results, nano bubble water seems to enhance the photosynthetic capacity of microalgae.
