A numerical investigation on a suction vortices, free vortices and subsurface vortices behavior in the model sump system with multi-intakes is performed A test model sump and piping system were designed based on Froude similitude for the prototype of the recommended structure layout by HI-9.B Standard for Pump Intake Design of the Hydraulic Institute. A numerical analysis of three dimensional multiphase flows through the model sump is performed by using the finite volume method of the CFX code with multi-block structured grid systems. A ${\kappa}-{\omega]$ ShearStressTransportturbulencemodelandthe Rayleigh-Plesset cavitation model are used for solving turbulence cavitating flow. From the numerical analysis, several types of vortices are reproduced and their formation, growing shedding and detailed vortex structures are investigated. To reduce abnormal vortices, an anti-vortex device is considered and its effect is investigated and discussed.
Conical vortices on roof corners of a prismatic low-rise building have been investigated by using the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and model height was $5.3{\times}10^3$. Mean and instantaneous vector fields for velocity, vorticity, and turbulent kinetic energy were measured at two vertical planes and for two different flow angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. The measurements provided a clear view of the complex flow structures on roof corners such as a pair of counter rotating conical vortices, secondary vortices, and tertiary vortices. They also enabled accurate and easy measurement of the size of vortices. Additionally, we could easily locate the centers of the vortices from the ensemble averaged velocity fields. It was observed that the flow angle of a $30^{\circ}$ produces a higher level of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy in one of the pair of vortices than does the $45^{\circ}$ flow angle.
Separation bubble and conical vortices on a large-span flat roof were observed in this study through the use of flow visualization. The results indicated that separation bubble occurred when the flow was normal to the leading edge of the flat roof. Conical vortices that occur under the cornering flow were observed near the leading edge, and their appearance was influenced by the wind angle. When the wind changed from along the diagonal to deviating from the diagonal of the roof, the conical vortex close to the approaching flow changed from circular to be more oblong shaped. Based on the measured velocities in the conical vortices by flow visualization, a proposed two-dimensional vortex model was improved and validated by simplifying the velocity profile between the vortex and the potential flow region. Through measured velocities and parameters of vortices, the intensities of conical vortices and separation bubble on a large-span flat roof under different wind directions were provided. The quasi-steady theory was corrected by including the effect of vortices. With this improved two-dimensional vortex model and the corrected quasi-steady theory, the mean and peak suction beneath the cores of the conical vortices and separation bubble can be predicted, and these were verified by measured pressures on a larger-scale model of the flat roof.
Numerical investigation of asymmetric vortices at high angles of attack subsonic flow is performed using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. A small bump has been carefully selected and attached near the nose of an ogive cylinder to simulate symmetric vortices. Selected bump shape does develop asymmetric vortices and is verified using Lamont's experimental results. By changing the angle of attack, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers, the characteristics of asymmetric vortices are observed. The angle of attack which contributes significantly to the generation of asymmetric vortices are over 30 degrees. By increasing Mach number and Reynolds number asymmetric vortices, hence the side forces show decreasing trend..

The development of pre-set wavelength G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices are studied in the boundary-layer flows on concave surfaces of 1.0 and 2.0 m radius of curvature. The wavelengths of the vortices were pre-set by thin wires of 0.2 mm diameter placed 10 mm upstream and perpendicular to the concave surface leading edge. Velocity contours were obtained from velocity measurements using a single hot-wire anemometer probe. The most amplified or dominant wavelength is found to be 15 mm for free-stream velocity of 2.1 m/s and 3.0 m/s on the concave surface of R = 1 m and 2 m, respectively. The velocity contours in the cross-sectional planes at several streamwise locations show the growth and breakdown of the vortices. Three different regions can be identified based on the growth rate of the vortices. The occurrence of a secondary instability mode is also shown in the form of mushroom-like structures as a consequence of the non-linear growth of the G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices. By pre-setting the vortex wavelength to be much larger and much smaller than the most amplified one, the splitting and merging of G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices can be respectively observed.
Numerical investigation on the structures of various Taylor vortices induced in the flow between two concentric cylinders, with the inner one rotating and with a pressure-driven axial flow imposed, is carried out, and compared with the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow [Phys. fluid, 11(12), 1999] who studied the Taylor vortices using PIV in detail. Especially, the properties of helical vortices and random wavy vortices are discussed, and their three-dimensional structures are visualized using the numerical data. Our simulation also predicts that random wavy vortices have quasi-periodic movement which can be explained by traveling waves formed in the azimuthal direction. The numerical results are well consistent with the experimental findings of Wereley and Lueptow.
The unsteady evolution of trailing vortex sheets behind wings in close formation flight near the ground is simulated using a discrete vortex method. The ground effect is included by an image method. The method is validated by comparing computed results with other numerical results. For a lifting line with an elliptic loading, the ground has an effect of moving wingtip vortices laterally outward and suppressing the development of vortex evolution. The gap between wings in close formation flight has an effect of moving up wingtip vortices facing each other. For wings flying in parallel, the ground effect causes the wingtip vortices facing each other to move up, and it makes the opposite wing tip vortices to move laterally outward. When there is a relative height between the wings in ground effect, right-hand side wingtip vortices from a mothership move laterally inward.
We study time-periodic Taylor-Couette flow with the outer cylinder at rest and the inner one oscillating with a mean angular velocity. Varying the frequency of inner cylinder, we investigate the change of Taylor vortices at a given amplitude and a mean angular velocity. With a small frequency of modulation, we find that Taylor vortices appear and disappear periodically. With a higher frequency, Taylor vortices do not disappear, but the intensity of Taylor vortices modulates periodically. As the frequency increases, Taylor vortices modulate harmonically.
A rich phenomenon in the dynamics of azimuthal vortices in a circular cylinder caused by the inertial oscillation is investigated numerically at high Reynolds numbers and moderate Rossby numbers. In the actual spin-up flow where both the Ekman circulation and the bottom friction effects are included, the first appearance of a seed vortex is generated by the Ekman boundary-layer on the bottom wall and the subsequent roll-up near the corner bounded by the side wall. The existence of the small vortex then rapidly propagates toward the inviscid region and induces a complicated pattern in the distribution of azimuthal vorticity, i.e. inertial oscillation. The inertial oscillation however does not deteriorate the classical Ekman-pumping model in the time scale larger than that of the oscillatory motion. Motions of single vortex and a pair of vortices are further investigated under a slip boundary-condition on the solid walls. For the case of single vortex, repeated change of the vorticity sign is observed together with typical propagation of inertial waves. For the case of a pair of vortices with a two-step profile in the initial azimuthal velocity, the vortices' movement toward the outer region is resisted by the crescent-shape vortices surrounding the pair. After touching the border between the core and outer regions, the pair vortices weaken very fast.

The critical currents I$_c$ of the YBCO grain boundaries of 90-degree [100] symmetric tilt showed a hysteretic behavior depending on how the external magnetic fields were applied. Near 77K for fields less than ${\sim}$1 T, the field-cooled I$_c$ of grain boundaries was larger than the zero-field-cooled I$_c$. This result is consistent with the model in which the grain-boundary vortices can be pinned by neighboring Abrikosov vortices in the nearby grains.
