  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the evolution and vortical structure of a single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow fields. A predictor-corrector-type numerical scheme with a low Mach number approximation was used, and a two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as the combustion model. Through the comparisons of single vortex behaviors in reacting and non-reacting jet flow fields, it was found that the evolution characteristics and vortical structure of the single vortex were significantly influenced by a outer vortex that was generated from the buoyance effect as well as the chemical heat release. Furthermore, it was also identified that the differences of the vortical structure in reacting and non-reacting jet flow fields were mainly attributed to the thermal expansion, Baroclinic torque and buoyance effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydraulic characteristics of the ice-harbor fishway by considering its geometrical form and utilize such analysis results as the foundational database to be used when establishing fishways in the future. first of all, the study realizes the same form as an ice-harbor fishway that is currently implemented via a FLOW-3D model and estimated the parameters that were optimal to the numerical mock test. Then, this study analyzed the level of sensitivity of the flow conditions which fluctuated due to the changes in geometrical changes by adjusting the inclination and pocket spacing by using the estimated optimal parameters. As a result, the study arrived at the following conclusions. The vortical velocity increased and had a significant effect on the inclination of the fishway. Furthermore, as the velocity within the vorticity increased due to the narrowed vortical area, it was determined that further studies on vorticities or the determination of the design method for the decrease in vortical velocity were imperative.

  • Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the streamwise direction. On the casing wall, a separation line is formed upstream of the leakage vortex center due to the interference between the leakage vortex and main flow. The reverse flow is observed between the separation line and the attachment line generated downstream of the trailing edge, and increased with enlarging tip clearance. The patterns of a leakage velocity vector including a leakage flow rate are also analyzed according to two tip clearances. It is noted that the understanding of the distribution of a limiting streamline on the casing wall is very important to grasp the characteristics of the vortical flow in the axial flow fan.

  • A numerical study of a two-dimensional acoustic field is carride ort for a spinning vortex pair located neat a wall to investigate the effect of the wall from the spinning quadrupole source in unsteady vortical flows. Based on the known incompressible flow field, the perturbed compressible acoustic terms derived from the Euler equations are calculated. Non-reflecting boundary conditions on the free field and the solid boundary conditions are developed for a generalized curvilinear coordinates system to investigate the effect of a curced wall. It is concluded that the sound generated by the quadrupole sources of unsteady vortical flows in the presence of a flat wall or a circular cylinder can be calculated by using the source terms of hydrodynamic flow fluctuations in both near and far acoustic fields simultaneously.

  • Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.

  • A large eddy simulation(LES) is performed for turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylinder chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is installed inside the combustion chamber. The Smagorinsky model is employed and the calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of the inlet pipe. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing them with the laser-doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory. Emphasis is placed on the time-dependent evolutions of turbulent vortical structure behind the flame holder. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of large-scale vortices. The turbulent mixing process behind the flame holder is analyzed by visualizing the sectional views of vortical structure.

  • This paper dispicts the vortical flow characteristics over a delta wing using a computational analysis for the purpose of investigating and visualizing the effect of the angle of attack and fee stream velocity on the low-speed delta wing aerodynamics. Computations are applied to the full, 3-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations. In computations, the free stream velocity is changed between 20m/s and 60m/s and the angle of attack of the delta wing is changed between $16^{\circ}\;and\;28^{\circ}$. For the correct prediction of the major features associated with the delta wing vortex flows, various turbulence models are tested. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model predict well the vertical flows over the delta wing. Computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. It is found that the present CFD results predict the vortical flow characteristics over the delta wing, and with an increase in the free steam velocity, the leading edge vortex moves outboard and its streangth is increased.

  • Vortical structures in the near-wake region of a cubic obstacle are studied using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one of the plates. In the turbulent near-wake region of the flow, coherent structures such as hairpin vortices are found. Quasi-periodic behavior of the hairpin vortices is noticed; its dimensionless frequency at Re=1,000 is about 0.82 which is consistent with the result of Elavarasan of et al.'s experiment [Fluid Dyn. Research, 2000, 27] although their geometry is somewhat different from on. In the case of Re=3,500, the dimensionless frequency of the hairpin vortex is about 1.60. It is observed that the translating speed of the head of the hairpin vortex is lower than the streamwise mean velocity at that location. In the vicinity of the lower plate downstream of the cube, various length scales are identified thus less coherent. However, it is noticed that the vortical structures become gradually elongated downstream of the new reattachment.
