The impacts of equivalence ratio on flow structure and flame dynamic in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). Dynamic k-equation model and G-equation flamelet model are employed as LES subgrid model for flow and combustion, respectively. As a result of mean flow field for each equivalence ratio, the increase of equivalence ratio brings about the decrease of swirl intensity through the modification of thermal effect and viscosity, although the same swirl intensity is imposed at inlet. The changes of vortical structure and turbulent intensity etc. near flame surface are occurred consequently. That is, the decrease of equivalence ratio can leads to the increase of heat release fluctuation by the more increased turbulent intensity and fluctuation of recirculation flow. In addition, the effect of inner vortex generated from vortex breakdown on the heat release fluctuation is increased gradually with the decrease of equivalence ratio. Finally, it can be identified that the variations of vortical structure play an important role in combustion instability, even though the small change of equivalence ratio is occurred.

Using a semi-circled blunt body model, the geometrical effects of injection hole on the turbine blade leading edge film cooling are investigated. The film cooling characteristics of two shaped holes (laterally- and streamwise-diffused holes) and three cylindrical holes with different lateral injection angles, 30°, 45°, 60°, respectively, are compared with those of cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle experimentally and numerically. Kidney vortices, which decrease the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, appear on downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. At downstream of the two shaped holes have better film cooling characteristics than the cylindrical one. Instead of kidney vortices, single vortex appears on downstream of injection holes with lateral injection angle. The adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is symmetrically distributed along the lateral direction downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. But, at downstream of the cylindrical holes with lateral injection angle, the distribution of adiabatic film cooling effectiveness in the lateral direction shows asymmetric nature and high adiabatic film cooling effectiveness regions are more widely distributed than those of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. As the blowing ratio increases, also, the effects of hole shapes and injection angles increase.

The combustion instability of turbulent flames is the most important problem of the gas turbine combustor. Thus improved understanding of mechanisms of combustion instability is necessary for the design and operation of gas turbine combustors. In this study, the cause of the combustion instability in a rearward-step dump combustor was investigated with respect to the fuel flow modulation; choked fuel flow, unchoked fuel flow and fully premixed mixture flow. We observed various types of combustion instabilities with respect to the change of equivalence ratio, fuel flow conditions and fuel injection location. Particularly in the unchoked fuel flow condition, it was found that the oscillation time of combustion instability is strongly related to the convection time of the fuel and that the pressure fluctuation in a lab-scale combustor is highly related to the vortex and the equivalence ratio fluctuations due to fuel flow modulation and unmixedness of the fuel and air.

A simple model of the tip leakage flow models of the rotor downstream flow is developed, based on Lakshminarayana's theoretical concept on the tip clearance flow and the experimental data published in open literature. And new spanwise distribution models of deviation angle and pressure loss coefficient due to the tip leakage flow are formulated for use in association with the streamline curvature method as a through flow analysis. Combining these new models and previous deviation and loss models due to secondary flow, a robust streamline curvature method is established for flow analysis of single-stage, subsonic axial turbines with wide ranges of turning angle, aspect ratio and blading type. At the exit from rotor rows, the flow variables are mixed radially according to a spanwise transport equation. The proposed streamline curvature method is tested against a forced vortex type turbine as well as a free vortex type one. The results show that the spanwise variations of flow angle, axial velocity and loss coefficients at rotor exit are predicted with good accuracy, being comparable to a steady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. This simple and fast flow analysis is found to be very useful for the turbine design at the initial design phase.
The important problems that arise in the design and performance of the axial flow turbine are the prediction and control of secondary flows. Some progresses have been made on understanding flow conditions that occur when the inlet endwall boundary layer separates at the point in the endwall and rolls up into the horseshoe vortex. And the flows though an axial turbine tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. The passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. Unsteady flow should be considered rotor/stator interactions. The main purpose of this research is control of secondary flow and improvement efficiency in turbine by leading edge modification in unsteady state. When the wake from the stator ran into the modified leading edge of the rotor, the leading edge generated the weak pressure fluctuation by complex passage flows. In conclusion, leading edge modification(bulb2) results in the reduced total pressure loss in the flow field.
In this study pressure and shaft torque pulsation were measured with variation of head and flow during the model test for a 15 MW Francis Turbine. Pressure pulsations were measured at the inlet of the spiral casing and 4 points in the cone of the diffuser and shaft torque pulsation at the upper position of the turbine. The maximum amplitude of pressure pulsation appeared 2.03% of the maximum rated head with the frequency of 25% of the rated revolution and at the guide vane opening of $10^{\circ}$. Shaft torque pulsation appeared 0.01% of the rated shaft torque, fairly low value. Air was admitted through the cone and pressure pulsation gradually decreased with increase of air flow and kept nearly constant after 5% of the rated flow. A new Francis turbine of which specific speed is 115 m-kW had been designed to rehabilitate the old one and the model test was performed at EPFL. The commercial code, STAR-$CCM^+$ was used for numerical simulation of flow.
Floating wind turbines have been suggested as a feasible solution for going further offshore into deeper waters. However, floating platforms cause additional unsteady motions induced by wind and wave conditions, so that it is difficult to predict annual energy output of wind turbines by using conventional power prediction method. That is because sectional inflow condition on a rotor plane is varied by unsteady motion of floating platforms. Therefore, aerodynamic simulation using Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) were used to investigate the influence of motion on the aerodynamic performance of a floating offshore wind turbine. Simulation with individual motion of offshore platform were compared to the case of onshore platform and carried out according to the wave height and the wave angular frequency.
The structure of sprays from a simplex type pilot nozzle atomizer is studied experimentally by measuring velocities, Sauter mean diameter, and number density. Interaction of the spray with gas-phase flow field generated from a 1 MW range industrial gas turbine combustor adopt ing a counter-swirler is investigated. Various spray behaviors are reported. Especially interest ing characteristics are the tangential motion of the spray and of the spray with swirl interaction. It shows a Rankine combined vortex type of velocity characteristics, having linear velocity profile inside the inner core whole small particles exist and rapidly decreasing velocity profiles outside. Interacting spray has relatively uniform number density profiles compared to the nozzle spray itself.
The heat (mass) transfer characteristics on the endwall surface of a first-stage linear turbine rotor cascade at off-design conditions has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The experiments are carried out at the Reynolds number of $2.78{\times}10^{5}$ for two incidence angles of -5% and +5%. The positive incidence angle results in intensification of the pressure-side leg of a leading-edge horseshoe vortex, which delivers higher heat transfer along its trace. On the other hand, the negative incidence angle show an opposite tendency.
The purpose of this work is to predict the low frequency aero-acoustic noise generated from the horizontal axis wind turbine, NREL Phase VI using large eddy simulation and Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Calculated aerodynamic performances such as shaft torque and power are compared with experimentally measured value. Performance results show a good agreement with experimental data within about 0.8%. If the distance by two times is changed from 32D to 64D toward the downstream region, sound pressure level is reduced by about 6.4dB.
