The aerodynamic losses so attributed to the endwall - usually termed secondary flow losses or secondary losses - can be as high as 30$\sim$50% of the total aerodynamic losses in a blade or stator row. Inlet guide vanes, with lower total turning and higher convergence ratios, will have smaller secondary losses, amounting to as much as 20% of total loss for an inlet stator row. These are important part for improving a turbine efficiency. The present study deals with a leading edge chamfer groove on a wing-body to investigate the vortex generation and characteristics of a horseshoe vortex with the installed height, and depth of the groove. The current study is investigated with $FLUENT^{TM}$.

The effects of the interaction between flow field and heat transfer caused by the longitudinal vortices are experimentally investigated using a five hole probe and a transient liquid crystal technique. The test facility consists of a wind tunnel with vortex generators protruding from a bottom surface and a mesh heater. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of vortex generators used in the present experiment is 20$^{\circ}$, and the spacing between the vortex generators is 25mm. The height and cord length of the vortex generator is 20mm and 50mm, respectively. Three-component mean velocity measurements are made using a f-hole probe system, and the surface temperature distribution is measured by the hue capturing method using a transient liquid crystal technique. The transient liquid crystal technique in measuring heat transfer has become one of the most effective ways in determining the full surface distributions of heat transfer coefficients. The key point of this technique is to convert the inlet flow temperature into an exponential temperature profile using the mesh heater set up in the wind tunnel. The conclusions obtained in the present experiment are as follows: The two maximum heat transfer values exist over the whole domain, and as the longitudinal vortices move to the farther downstream region, these peak values show the decreasing trends. These trends are also observed in the experimental results of other researchers to have used the uniform heat flux method.

Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof corner of a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 5.3$\times$10$^3$. The mean, instantaneous velocity vector fields, vorticity fields, and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured for two different angles of attack, 30$^{\circ}$and 45$^{\circ}$. The PIV measurements clearly observed not only the conical main vortex and the secondary vortex but also the tertiary vortex which is firstly reported in this paper. Asymmetric formation of the corner vortex for the case of 30$^{\circ}$angle of attack produces relatively the high magnitude of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy around the bigger vortex which generates the peak suction pressure on the roof. Fairly symmetric features of the roof vortex are observed in the case of 45$^{\circ}$angle of attack, however, the dynamic characteristics are proved to be asymmetric due to the rectangular shape of the roof.
Aircraft fuel efficiency is one of main concerns to aircraft manufacturers and to aviation companies because jet fuel price has tripled in last ten years. One of simple and effective methods to increase fuel efficiency is to reduce aircraft induced drag by using of wingtip devices. Induced drag is closely related to the circulation distribution, which produces strong wingtip vortex behind the tip of a finite wing. Wingtip devices including winglets can be successfully applied to reduce induced drag by wingtip vortex mitigation. Winglet design, however, is very complicated process and has to consider many parameters including installation position, height, taper ratio, sweepback, airfoil, toe-out angle and cant angle of winglets. In current research, different shapes of winglets are compared in the view of vortex mitigation. Appropriately designed winglets are proved to mitigate wingtip vortex and to increase lift to drag ratio. Also, the results show that winglets are more efficient than wingtip extension. That is the reason B-747-400 and B-737-800 chose winglets instead of a span increase to increase payload and range. Drag polar comparison chart is presented to show that minimum drag is increased by viscous drag of winglet, but at high lift, total drag is reduced by induced drag decrease. So, winglets are more efficient for aircraft that cruises at a high lift condition, which generates very strong wingtip vortex.
In this paper, the effects of the delta winglet vortex generator, the airfoil vortex generator and the guide vanes on the friction factor and the Colburn factor in the fin-tube flow were studied. The vortex generator and guide vane were non-dimensionalized based on the channel height and tube diameter, and locations were selected according to the authors' suggestions. The Reynolds number based on the inlet velocity and the tube diameter was selected in the range of 1400-8000. As a result, the friction factor resulted in a 4.7% decrease in guide vanes at the Reynolds number 8000 over the conventional fin-tube, and the Colburn factor resulted in a 33% increase in the delta winglet vortex generator at the Reynolds number 3800 over the conventional fin-tube.

The influence of reciprocating frequency and radius on heat transfer in the roughened rectangular channel is experimentally investigated. The aspect ratio (width/height) of the duct is 2.33 and the rib height is one fifteenth of the duct height. And the ratio of rib-to-rib distance to rib height is 10. The discrete ribs were periodically attached to the button wall of the duct with a parallel orientation. The parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number, reciprocating, and reciprocating radius, in the ranges, 1,000∼6,000, 1.7∼2.5 HB and 7∼15cm, respectively. The combined effects of reciprocating frequency and reciprocating radius have considerable influence on the heat transfer due to the modified vortex flow structure.

We investigate two-dimensional laminar flow around rectangular cylinders placed in a uniform stream. Numerical simulations are performed, using finite volume method, in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$ and $0.1{\leq}W/H{\leq}1.0$, where Re and W/H are the Reynolds number and the width-to-height ratio, respectively. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the rectangular cylinder in a rectangular grid system. Comparisons with the previous results show good agreement in Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient. The present study reports the detailed information of flow structure at different width-to-height ratios in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$.
The effect of channel cutback on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.51% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The cutback length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $CB/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The results show that longer cutback delivers not only stronger secondary flow but also higher aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, meanwhile it leads to lower aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The discharge of cavity fluid through the cutback opening provides a beneficial effect in the reduction of aerodynamic loss, whereas there also exists a side effect of aerodynamic loss increase due to local wider tip gap near the trailing edge. With increasing $CB/c_c$ from 0.0 to 0.3, the aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane tends to increase slightly.

The planar laminar impingement jet with a confinement plate has been studied numerically. Discretzing the convection term with the QUICKER scheme, the full Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow were solved using the well known SIMPLER algorithm. The flow characteristics with Reynolds number and jet exit velocity profile effects on it were considered for H=3, Re=200 - 2000. Results show that vortical flow forms in turn along the confinement and impingement plates as the Reynolds number increases and such a complicated flow pattern has never been reported prior. The jet exit velocity profile is shown to do an important role in determining the position of vortex flow and its size as well as in stagnation and wall jet flow region. Parabolic jet exit profile results in peak of skin friction 1.4-1.6 times greater than that of uniform profile. The channel height effects are also studied and shown to have an effect on flow pattern similar to that of Reynolds number. Also shown is that effects of the jet exit velocity profile becomes less significant over a certain channel height.

The opening length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $OL/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.7 The results show that longer OL leads not only to weaker secondary flow but also to lower aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, while it significantly widens the area with high aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane is kept almost constant for $0.0{\leq}OL/c_c{\leq}0.3$, whereas it increases rapidly for $OL/c_c$ > 0.3 in proportion to $OL/c_c$. There is little deterioration in flow turning with increasing $OL/c_c$.
