Presently, test results and stress-strain models for poorly confined high-strength columns, more specifically for columns with a tie volumetric ratio smaller than $2.0\%$, are scarce. This paper presents test results loaded in axial direction for square reinforced concrete columns confined by various volumetric ratio lateral ties including low-volumetric ratio. Test variables include concrete compressive strength, tie yield strength, tie arrangement type, and tie volumetric ratio. Local strains measured using strain gages bonded to an acryl rod. For square RC columns confined by lateral ties, the confinement effect was efficiently improved by changing tie arrangement type from Type-A to Type-B. A method to compute the stress in lateral ties at the concrete peak strength and a new stress-strain model for the confined concrete are proposed. Over a wide range of confinement parameters, the model shows good agreement with stress-strain relationships established experimentally.
Objective : Determining language lateralization is important for the presurgical evaluation of patients with medically intractable epilepsy. The Wada test has been the gold standard for lateralization of language dominance before epilepsy surgery. However, it is an invasive test with risk, and have some limitations. Methods : We compared the volumetric analysis with Wada test, and studied the clinical potential of volumetric analysis to assess language laterality in large surgical candidates with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). To examine the efficacy of volumetric analysis to determine language lateralization during presurgical evaluation, we compared the volumetric analysis of the bilateral planum temporale with the results of Wada test in 59 patients with chronic intractable TLE (rTLE, n=32; lTLE, n=27) who underwent epilepsy surgery. We measured the gray matter volumes of planum temporale (PT) of each patients using the VoxelPlus2 program (Mevisys, Daejeon, Korea). Results : Overall congruence of the volumetric analysis with the Wada test was 97.75% in rTLE patients and 81.5% in lTLE patients. There were more significant leftward asymmetry of the PT in rTLE patients than lTLE patients. In lTLE patients, relatively high proportion (37%) of the patients showed bilateral or right hemispheric language dominance. Conclusion : These results provide evidence that the volumetric analysis of the PT could be used as an alternatives in language lateralization. Also, the results of the Wada test suggested that there was considerable plasticity of language representation in the brains of patients with intractable TLE and it was associated with an earlier age of brain injury.

PURPOSE. The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a desktop scanner and intraoral scanners based on the volumetric dimensions of a complete arch. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seven reference models were fabricated based on the volumetric dimensions of complete arch (70%, 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, 120%, and 130%). The reference models were digitized using an industrial scanner (Solutionix C500; MEDIT) for the fabrication of a computer-aided design (CAD) reference model (CRM). The reference models were digitized using three intraoral scanners (CS3600, Trios3, and i500) and one desktop scanner (E1) to fabricate a CAD test model (CTM). CRM and CTM were then superimposed using inspection software, and 3D analysis was conducted. For statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance was used to verify the difference in accuracy based on the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch and the accuracy based on the scanners, and the differences among the groups were analyzed using the Tukey HSD test as a post-hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS. The three different scanners showed a significant difference in accuracy based on the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch (P<.05), but the desktop scanner did not show a significant difference in accuracy based on the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch (P=.808). CONCLUSION. The accuracy of the intraoral scanners was dependent on the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch, but the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch had no effect on the accuracy of the desktop scanner. Additionally, depending on the type of intraoral scanners, the accuracy differed according to the volumetric dimensions of the complete arch.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the soil-water characteristic curves for an unsaturated soil. To this ends, a series of suction measured test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soils taken from different sites of Korea, using modified pressure plate apparatus. Form the test results, the water contents, degree of saturation and volumetric water contents were analyzed with the suction. And the soil-water characteristic curves of unsaturated soil were drawn from the test results for various factors. The characteristic curves drawn with water content vs matric suction were classified certainly the difference in wet side but were not classified in dry side. The characteristic curves drawn with degree of saturation vs matric suction for unsaturated soil were shown the opposite inclination as compared with the former curve. But the characteristic curve with volumetric water content vs matric suction was described suitably not only in wet side condition but also in dry side. And it was found that the volumetric water contents of loose soil was high at the initial condition but that of dense soil was high at final condition (dry side).

The Volumetric Interferometer using two spherical wavefronts emitted from the ends of two single mode fibers has been suggested to measure 3-dimensional absolute coordinates. In this paper, we try to improve the performance of the volumetric interferometer using multi-CCDs. We get coordinates matching matrixes between CCDs and can obtain more information in the space with multi-CCDs. Also we find out the best arrangement of multi-CCDs by computer simulations. In the simulation we can know that it will be better to increase the distance between CCDs to improve performance. For the performance test, we do a repeatability test, a comparison test with 2-D stage and the self-calibration using artifact.

Machine tool errors have to be characterized and predicted to improve machine tool accuracy. A real-time error compensation system has been developed based on volumetric error synthesis model which is composed of machine tool errors. This paper deals with new algorithm about verification of machine tool errors. This new algorithm uses a simplified volumetric error synthesis model. This simplified model is constructed with only main components among the error components of the machines. This main error components are analyzed by three-dimensional helical ball bar test. By substituting result of helical ball bar test fer simplified model, we could find that obtained error components are closed to real error components.

Machining accuracy is affected by quasi-static errors of machining center. Since machine errors have a direct influence upon both the surface finish and geometric shape of the finished workpiece, it is very important to measure the machine errors and to compensate these errors. The laser measurement method for identifying geometric errors of machine tool has the disadvantages such as high cost, long calibration time and usage of volumetric error synthesis model. Accordingly, this paper deals with analysis of the geometric errors of a machine tool using ball bar test without using complicated error synthesis model. Statistical analysis method was adopted in this paper for deriving geometric errors using hemispherical helix ball bar test. As a result of experiment, geometric errors of the vertical machining center are compensated by 88%.

In this paper, we accomplish uncertainty evaluation and performance test of the volumetric interferometer using two spherical wavefronts emitted from the ends of two single mode fibers. We verify that the volumetric interferometer has the volume uncertainty of 690nm through the error analysis and it has the resolution of 0.1 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ for x axis which is the same order of repeatability for x axis. Also, we obtain the systematic error of $1\mu\textrm{m}$ for $60\times 60\times 20 mm^3$ working volume using self-calibration with an artifact plate.

Machine tool errors have to be characterized and predicted to improve machine tool accuracy. Therefore, it is very important to assess errors in machine tools. Volumetric error analysis has been developed by many researchers. This paper presents a useful technique for analyzing the volumetric errors in machine tools using the ball bar. The volumetric error model is proposed in specific vertical machining center and the program is developed for generating NC code, acquiring the ball bar data, and analyzing the volumetric errors. The developed system assesses the volumetric errors such as positional, straightness, squareness, and back lash. Also this system analyzes the dynamic performance such as servo gain mismatch. The radial data acquired by ball bar on 3D space is used for analyzing these errors. It is convenient to test the volumetric errors on 3D space because all errors are calculated at once. The developed system has been tested using an actual vertical machining center.

The improvement of volumetric efficiency of air charging into combustion chamber is a primary requirement to obtain better mean effective pressure of an engine. Since parameters such as the air resistances in intake and exhaust flow passages, valve lift and valve timing influence greatly to the volumetric efficiency, it is very convenient and time saving if we can optimize these parameters by computation before we enter into long time fact finding engine tests. In this study we have developed a semi-empirical engine simulation program for the determinations of intake and exhaust valve timings, valve lifts, intake and exhaust port diameters in order to obtain highest volumetric efficiency. In this computation it requires only the measured variational pressures in intake and exhaust port. Using these variational pressures as an input data for our simulation program, we can calculate volumetric efficiency more accurately and can save computing time drastically. To confirm the validity of our simulation program we have made engine operation test in parallel and taken the experimental data. Comparing the computation result with the experimental data obtained through real engine test it has shown only the difference of 3%.
