A study on the effects of volumetric loading rate, surface loading rate and hydraulic. retention time (HRT) for the anaerobic treatment was conducted with the anaerobic fixed-film process using synthetic wastewater at lower temperature than that of conventional anaerobic treatment. The results are as follows 1. Alkalinity and pH value decreased as the hydraulic retention time increased 2. Increase of the volumetric lodaing rate led to increasl of effluent COD concentration and decrease of COD removal efficiency. 3. The removed volumetric loading rate increased linearly according to the increase of the volumrtric loading rate. 4. Similarly, the linear increase of the removed surface loading rate was noticed with an increase of the surface loading rate.
Air-lift biofilm reactor should be an admirable process substituting conventional activated sludge process, because of its small area requirement as well as high volumetric loading capacity and stability against loading and chemical shocks. However most of the past research on the performance of ABR was focused on the sewage treatment. This research studied the applicability of ABR to treat high strength wastewater. A bench-scale ABR was operated to treat high strength synthetic wastewater, tannery wastewater and petrochemical wastewater, and its applicability was conclusive In case of synthetic wastewater, ABR showed good performance in which the substarate removal efficiency was higher that 80% even under short HRT(1.4 hr) and high volumetric loading rate(9.3 kgCODcr/$m^3$.day). When ABR was applied to treat tannery wastewater, it was suggested that the maximum volumetric loading rate and F/M ratio should be 7.7kgCODcr/$m^3$.day, 0.76 $day^{-1}$, respectively. And high substrate removal efficiency over than 90 % was observed with 4,000 mgCODcr/L of petrochemical wastewater. Even though effluent concentration was quite high, ABR should be applicable to treat the high strength wastewater, because of its high loading capacity.
This study was conducted to investigate anoxic-RBC (rotating biological contactor) and its application in advanced municipal wastewater treatment process to remove biologically organics and ammonia nitrogen. Effluent COD and nitrogen concentration increased as the increase of volumetric loading rate. But, the concentration changes of NO$_2$$\^$-/ -N and NO$_3$$\^$-/ -N were little, as compared to COD and NH$_4$$\^$+/ -N. When the volumetric loading rate increased, COD removal efficiency and nitrification appeared very high as 96.7∼98.8% and 92.5∼98.8%, respectively. However, denitrification rate decreased to 76.2∼88.0%. These results showed that the change of volumetric loading rate affected to the denitrification rate more than COD removal efficiency or nitrification rate. The surface loading rates applied to RBC were 0.13~6.0lg COD/㎡-day and 0.312∼1.677g NH$_4$$\^$+/-N㎡-day and they were increased as the increase of volumetric loading rate. However, the nitrification rate showed higher than 90%. The thickness of the biofilm in RBC was 0.130 ∼0.141mm and the density of biofilm was 79.62∼83.78mg/㎤. They were increased as surface loading rate increased. From batch kinetic tests, the k$\_$maxH/ and k$\_$maxN/ were obtained as 1.586 g C/g VSS-day, and 0.276 g N/g VSS-day, respectively. Kinetic constants of denitrifer in anoxic reactor, Y, k$\_$e/, K$\_$s/, and k were 0.678 mg VSS/mg N, 0.0032 day$\^$-1/, 29.0 mg N/l , and 0.108 day$\^$-l/, respectively. P and K$\_$s/, values of nitrification and organics removal in RBC were 0.556 g N/㎡-day and 18.71 g COD/㎡-day, respectively.
The bearing mechanism of pile during installation and loading process which controls the deformation and distribution of strain and stress in the soil surrounding pile tip is complex and full of much uncertainty. It is pointed out that particle crushing occurs in significant stress concentrated region such as the area surrounding pile tip. The solution to this problem requires the understanding and modeling of the mechanical behavior of granular soil under high pressures. This study aims to investigate the sand behavior around pile tip considering the characteristics of sand crushing. The numerical analysis of model pile loading test under different surcharge pressure with constitutive model for sand crushing is presented. This constitutive model is capable of predicting the dilatancy of soil from negative to positive under low confining pressure and only negative dilatancy under high confining pressure. The predicted relationships between the normalized bearing stress and normalized displacement are agreeable with the experimental results during the entire loading process. It is estimated from numerical results that the vertical stress beneath pile tip is up to 20 MPa which is large enough to cause sand to be crushed. The predicted distribution area of volumetric strain represents that the distributed area shaped wedge for volumetric contraction is beneath pile tip and distributed area for volumetric expansion is near the pile shaft. It is demonstrated that the finite element formulation incorporating a constitutive model for sand with crushing is capable of producing reasonable results for the pile loading problem.
This study was carried out to investigate the treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor when the livestock nightsoil organic loading rate was varied. Sequencing batch reactor was operated with the variance of influent BOD concentration and operating cycle. The average influent BOD concentrations in this study were 150 mg/l, 200 mg/l, 250 mg/l, 300 mg/l, 350 mg/l, 400 mg/l, 450 mg/l and 500 mg/l in the condition of 1~3 cycles/day. The treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor is good at the volumetric loading of 0.05~0.20 kg $BOD/m^3\cdot day$. Therefore, sequencing batch reactor process would become an effective alternative for the process of small scale livestock nightsoil treatment plants.
The Soysauce wastewater removal characteristics of submerged biofilters filled with two filter media respectively were experimentally examined with constant temperature, pH value and variable BOD loading and recirculation ratio. The decreasing order of BOD removal is Netring(random plastic media), cubic wire meshes(plastic module). This is mainly due to the media characteristics such as void ratio, specific surface area and media shapes. The BOD removal ratio decreases with increasing $BOD_5$/ volumetric loading rate, and the loading rate for the BOD removal over 85% is lower than 1.5kg$BOD_5$ 5/$m^3$d for the plastic media of Netring and cubic wire meshes. The $BOD_5$ removal rate increases with the recirculation ratio, but the rate of increase become smaller as the recirculation ratio increases over 20. When $BOD_5$ volumetric loading is 1.5kg$BOD_5$/$m^3$d, the required recirculation ratio to obtain 85% BOD$_{5}$ removal is about 20 for Netring and it was about 30 for cubic wire meshes.s.
This study investigates liquefaction-induced settlement through strain-controlled tests using a cyclic direct simple shear device on clean sand specimens. By focusing on the accumulated shear strain, soil density, sample preparation method, and cyclic waveshape, this study attempts to enhance the understanding of soil behavior under seismic loading and its further deformation. Results from tests conducted on remolded samples reveal insights into excess pore water pressure development and post-liquefaction volumetric strain behavior, with denser samples exhibiting lower volumetric strains than looser samples. Similarly, the correlation between the frequency and amplitude variations of the wave and volumetric strain highlights the importance of wave characteristics in soil response, with shear strain amplitude changes, varying the volumetric strain response after reconsolidation. In addition, samples prepared under moist conditions exhibit less volumetric strain than dry-reconstituted samples. Overall, the findings of this study are expected to contribute to predictive models to evaluate liquefaction-induced settlement.
This study investigated performance of the phenol degradation and reaction characteristics according to variation of phenol volumetric loading rates and dilution rates in suspension and PACT reactors using Pseudomonas sp. B3. 1. Removal efficiencies of the PAC unit indicated about 100 % with phenol volumetric loading rates from 0.4 phenol $kg/ma^3\cdot d$ to 1.2 phenol $kg/m^3\cdot d$, however, which of the suspension reactor showed about 100% with from 0.2 phenol $kg/m^3\cdot d$ to 0.75 phenol $kg/ma^3\cdot day$. 2. The cell density slightly was decreased from 298.2 mg/l to 272 mg/l, when dilution rate for suspension was reactor increased from 0.4 to 1.41 1/d, and also the cell density suddenly was decreased to 145.5 mg/l and was washed out at the dilution rate higher than 1.60 1/d. But the cell density for the PAC unit was linearly decreased with dilution rate of from 0.8 to 3.0 1/d, and showed 220.75 mg/l at maximum dilution rate. 3. The phenol utilization rate was increased from 0.008 to 0.031 phenol g/l$\cdot$h, when dilution rate for suspension reactor was increased from 0.4 to 1.5 1/d, however, the rate for the PAC unit was linearly increased from 0.017 to 0.061 phenol g/l$\cdot$h as variation changes from 0.017 to 0.061 phenol g/l$\cdot$h dilution rate.
A new process was developed to degrade PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) in desize wastewater. Two symbiotic bacteria of Pseudomonas strain G5Y and PW were immobilized on the media by adsorption. A natural zeolite was chosen as the best media considering cell adhesion capacity, sedimentation rate, and material cost. PVA and COD removal efficiencies of this system for synthetic wastewater were 84% and 85% at the retention time of 6 hr, when the volumetric loading rate was PVA 8g/L·day and COD 8g/L·day, and cell density was 19,775 mg/L. In case of desire wastewater, they were 78% and 72% at the retention time of 6 hr, respectively, when the volumetric loading rate was PVA 8g/L·day and COD 13.2g/L·day, and cell density was 32,899mg/L. In case of desize wastewater, PVA and COD removal efficiencies were lower than synthetic wastewater, but cell density of the desize wastewater was lower than that of the synthetic wastewater, because there were insufficiency of necessary nutrition and variety of desize materials in the desize wastewater. A pilot test was successfully performed showing 88% and 82%, PVA and COD removal efficiencies at the retention time of 24 hr, when volumetric loading rate were 4.7 PVA g/L·day and COD 6.9g/L·day, and cell density was 12,,324 mg/L.
An efficient packed-bed type biofilm reactor charged with immobilized phototrophs was developed to treat organic wastewater at an extremely high volumetric loading rate. The packed bed reactor (PBR) charged with porous ceramic beads was superior to a fluidized-bed reactor suspended with activated carbon powders in terms of many aspects such as BOD removal efficiency, operational stability, and overall economics. For wastewater with BOD concentration as high as 20, 000mg/l, the BOD removal efficiency was maintained above 90% when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was longer than 1 day. The allowable volumetric BOD loading rate of this reactor (20gBOD/l day) is more than ten-folds higher than that of an ordinary activated sludge method. The behaviour of the reactor was represented well by a Monod type kinetic equation with a maximum specific BOD loading rate(P) of 22.2gBOD/l day and a half saturation constant(K$_{s}$) of 1, 750 mgBOD/l.
