The examination on the operating mechanism of a pulsating heat pipe (PHP) using visualization revealed that the working fluid in the PHP oscillated to the axial direction by the contraction and expansion of vapor plugs. This contraction and expansion is due to the formation and extinction of bubbles in the evaporating and condensing section, respectively. In this paper, a theoretical model of PHP was presented. The theoretical model was based on the separated flow model with two liquid slugs and three vapor plugs. The results show that the diameter, surface tension and charge ratio of working fluid have significant effects on the performance of the PHP. The following conclusions were obtained. The periodic oscillations of liquid slugs and vapor plugs were obtained under specified parameters. When the hydraulic diameter of the PHP was increased to d=3mm, the frequency of oscillation decreased. By increasing the charging ratio from 40 to 60 by volume ratio, the pressure difference between the evaporating section and condensing section increased, the amplitude of oscillation reduced, and the oscillation frequency decreased. The working fluid with higher surface tension resulted in an increase in the amplitude and frequency of oscillation. Also the average temperature of vapor plugs decreased.
The most important advantage of nanoparticles is the increased thermal conductivity coefficient and convection heat transfer coefficient so that, as a result of using a 1.5% volume concentration of nanoparticles, the thermal conductivity coefficient would increase by about twice. In this paper, the effects of a nanofluid ($TiO_2$/water) on heat transfer characteristics such as the thermal conductivity coefficient, heat transfer coefficient, fuel clad, and fuel center temperatures in a VVER-1000 nuclear reactor are investigated. To this end, the cell equivalent of a fuel rod and its surrounding coolant fluid were obtained in the hexagonal fuel assembly of a VVER-1000 reactor. Then, a fuel rod was simulated in the hot channel using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation codes and thermohydraulic calculations (maximum fuel temperature, fluid outlet, Minimum Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (MDNBR), etc.) were performed and compared with a VVER-1000 reactor without nanoparticles. One of the most important results of the analysis was that heat transfer and the thermal conductivity coefficient increased, and usage of the nanofluid reduced MDNBR.

An experimental study was carried on the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in a fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tubes. Seven different solid particles having same volume were circulated in the tubes. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries and materials, and geometries of corrugated tubes on relative velocities and drag coefficients were investigated. The present work showed that the drag force coefficients of particles in the corrugated tubes were usually lower than those in the smooth tubes, meanwhile the relative velocities between particles and water in the corrugated tubes were little higher than those in the smooth tubes except the particles of glasses.
The objective of this research is to design, manufacture and test a mass flow controller capable of measuring compressible as well as incompressible fluid flows based on a 'bucket and stop-watch' method. The basic principle behind such a system is the measurement of time, where the time taken to fill and empty a bucket of known volume is measured. This device should be able to handle fluid flows in the range of 0.1 ml/min to 10 ml/min within an accuracy of ${\pm}$1%. For the flow meter to be able to compete with established designs, it must be not only comparable in cost and robustness, but also very accurate and reliable as well.
Flow with moving free surfaces is analyzed with an the Eulerian coordinate system. This study proposes a semi-implicit filling algorithm using VOF in which the PLIC (Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation) -type interface reconstruction method and the donor-acceptor-type front advancing scheme are adopted. Also, a new scheme using extrapolation of the stream function is proposed to find the velocity of the node that newly enters the computational domain. The effect of wall boundary conditions on the flow field and temperature field is examined by numerically solving a two-dimensional casting process.
The operating characteristics of hydrogen iodide (HI) decomposition for hydrogen production were investigated using the commercial computational fluid dynamics code, and various factors, such as hydrogen production, heat of reaction, and temperature distribution, were studied to compare device performance with that expected for device development. Hydrogen production increased with an increase of the surface-to-volume (STV) ratio. With an increase of hydrogen production, the reaction heat increased. The internal pressure and velocity of the HI decomposer were estimated through pressure drop and reducing velocity from the preheating zone. The mass of $H_2O$ was independent of the STV ratio, whereas that of HI decreased with increasing STV ratio.
Liquid water in flow channel is an important factor that limits the steady and transient performance of PEM fuel cells. A computational fluid dynamics study based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) multi-phase model is conducted to understand the transport behavior of liquid water in flow channel. The liquid water transport in $180^{\circ}$ bends is investigated and the effect of chamfering is discussed. The effect of wall adhesion is also considered by varying the contact angle of channel surfaces. The result of this study is believed to provide a useful guideline for design optimization of flow patterns or channel configurations of PEM fuel cells.
This paper deals with the added resistance of a ship in waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The ship added resistance is one of the key considerations in the design of energy-efficient ship. In this study, the added resistance of a LNG carrier in head waves is computed using a CFD code to consider the nonlinearity and the viscous effects. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) is numerically solved and the volume of fluid (VOF) approach is used to simulate the free surface flows. The length of incident wave varies from half the ship length to twice the ship length. To investigate the nonlinearity effect, both the linear wave condition and the nonlinear wave condition are considered. The heave and pitch motions are calculated along with the added resistance, and the wave contours are obtained. Grid convergence test is conducted thoroughly to achieve the converged motion and resistance values. The calculated results are compared and validated with experimental data.

Numerical models of fluid dynamics inside the micro actuator chamber and nozzle are presented. The models include ink flow from reservoir, bubble formation and growth, ejection through the nozzle, and dynamics of refill process. Since high tapered nozzle is one of the very important parameters for overall actuator performance design. The effects of variations of nozzle thickness, diameter, and taper angles are simulated and some results are compared with the experimental results. It is found that the ink droplet ejection through the thinner and high tapered nozzle is more steady, fast, and robust.
In this paper we report fluid flow characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparicles suspended in water. Especially, the effects of volume fraction with the range of 0.01% to 0.3% and tube diameter with $310{\mu}m$ to 1.735mm on the pressure drop and the effective viscosity of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparicles suspended in water are experimentally investigated. It is shown that the effective viscosity of water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids with 0.1 Vol.% through a circular tube of 1.024mm diameter is increased to about 6%. The effective viscosity from experimental results is compared with that from Einstein model. With the comparison, we show that Einstein model for determining the effective viscosity of nanofluids is not applicable to water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids.
