  • This study was conducted to derive merchantable volume ratio for 5 major species such as Pinus Densiflora (Central Region). The data used for this study was from at least more than 1,300 trees of research data throughout the country. the study applied two estimation equations, which were the estimation equation for wood volume ratio representing total wood volume to total tree stem volume and the estimation equation for merchantability representing ratio of merchantable volume to total wood volume. The merchantable volume ratio was derived by multiplying those two estimation equations. In order to gain wood volume ratio(W) from DBH, $W=\frac{a_1}{1+a_2/D}+\frac{b_1}{1+b_2/D}$ model was used. Fitness index of it was more than 99% by species, and other test statistics also indicated the suitability of this equation enough. Merchantability (M) for wood volume applied $M=e^{a_1\(\frac{d}{D}\)^{a_2}}-(b_0+b_1D+b_2D^2+b_3D^3)$ model and fitness index was more than 96% by species. Merchantable volume ratio was assessed using those two estimation equations by each 5 species, and constructed a merchantable volume ratio table. In result, merchuntable volume ratio was little difference between stand types, but there was slightly different with the existing standard such as conifers of 85% and non-conifers of 70%.

  • In this paper a forward-backward can extrusion process are analyzed by using rigid-plastic FEM simulation. FEM simulation is conducted to investigate forming characteristics such as deformation modes fur different process parameters. Design parameters such as thickness ratio, punch angle, friction factor and diameter ratio are selected to study the effect of them on the pattern of material flow. The analysis is focused mainly on the influences of the design factors on deformation pattern in terms of forming load, extruded length ratio and volume ratio. It is known for the simulation that the forming load, the length ratio and the volume ratio increase as the thickness ratio (TR), the wall thickness in forward direction to that in backward direction, decreases. The various punch angles have slight influence on the forming load. length ratio and volume ratio. However friction factor have little effect on the forming characteristics such as the forming load, volume ratio and so on. In addition the forming load increases as diameter ratio (DR), the outer diameter of a can in forward direction to that in backward direction, increases. Furthermore the extruded length ratio is lowest with a certain value of DR=0.85 among diameter ratios. Pressure distribution exerted on the die-material interface is illustrated schematically.

  • This paper deals with preliminary design conditions for a thermally actuated Vuilleumier refrigerator/heat pump. The previously reported approximate adiabatic analysis which is based on the 8-volume model makes it possible to evaluate exchanged heats per cycle as well as cyclic pressure, temperature and mass variation of each working volume. Calculated results reveal not only there exists an optimum value for the phase angle and the swept volume ratio maximizing a specific thermal output, but also design parameters can be determined independently of each other. Under a given combination of operating temperature levels, the optimum conditions for refrigeration are different from those for heat pumping and the differences between two operating modes become larger with decreasing the dead volume ratio. Both the optimum phase angle and the optimum swept volume ratio are increased asymptotically toward 0.5 pi and 1.0 respectively, as the dead volume ratio approaches to unity. When a VM machine is used for cooling and heating simultaneously, the design parameters should be carefully determined to reach the best performance.

  • Theoretical total nitrogen removal efficiency and reactor volume ratio in oxic-anoxic-oxic system can be found by influent water quality in this study. The influent water quality items for calculation were ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, and COD which can affect nitrification and denitrification reaction. Total nitrogen removal efficiency depends on influent allocation ratio. The total nitrogen removal follows the equation of 1/(1+b). Optimal reactor volume ratio for maximum TN removal efficiency was expressed by those influent water quality and nitrification/denitrification rate constants. It was possible to expect optimal reactor volume ratio by the calculation with the standard deviation of ${\pm}14.2$.

  • Practially useful method of steel fiber for construction work is presented in this study. The most important purpose of this study is to develop a model which can predict mechanical behavior of the structure according to aspect ratio and volume fraction of steel fiber. Experiments on compressive strength, elastic modulus, and splitting strength were performed with self-made cylindrical specimens of variable aspect ratios and volume fractions. The experiment showed that compressive strength was not in direct proportion to volume fraction which doesn't seem to have great influence over compressive strength. However, splitting strength showed almost direct proportion to aspect ratio and volume fraction. Improvement of optimal efficiency was confirmed when the aspect ratio was 70. Experiments on flexural strength, fracture energy, and characteristic length were carried out with self-manufactured beams with notch. As a result, increases of flexural strength, fracture energy, and characteristic length according to increase of volume fraction tend to be prominent when aspect ratio is 70. The steel fiber improves concrete to be more ductile and tough. Moreover, regression analysis was the performed and predictable model was developed after determining variables. With comparison and analysis of suggested estimated values and measured data, reliance of the model was verified.

  • Quantification of the regurgitation amount is important before and after valvular replacement surgery. Until now cardiac catheterization with cineventriculography, echocardiography have been used to measure the regurgitation amount, but also have many limitations. EKG gated cardiac blood pool scan provides a simple, non-invasive -method for quantify the regurgitation amount. By calculating the ratio of left ventricular to right ventricular stroke counts (stroke volume ratio) in gated bood pool scan, we measured the left ventricular regurgitation amount in 28 cases of valvular regurgitation and 25 cases of normal group. 1. Stroke volume ratio was higher in cases of valvular regurgitation $(2.11{\pm}0.58)$ than in cases of normal control $(1.15{\pm}0.31)$. (p<0.01). 2. Stroke volume ratio was classified by regurgitation grade using X-ray cineventriculography. In grades of mild regurgitation $(Grade\;I{\sim}II)$, stroke volume ratio was $2.02{\pm}0.29$, and in grades of severe regurgitation $(Grade\;III{\sim}IV)$, stroke volume ratio was $2.55{\pm}0.34$, so stroke volume ratio was well correlated with the grade of X-ray cineventriculography. 3. Stroke volume ratio was classfied by functional class made in New York Heart Association. In classes of mild regurgitation $(class\;I{\sim}II)$, stroke volume ratio was $2.08{\pm}0.26$, and in classes of severe regurgitation $(class\;III{\sim}IV)$, stroke volume ratio was $2.55{\pm}0.38$, Stroke volume ratio well represented the functional class. 4. After aortic and mitral valve replacement in 28 patients, the stroke volume ratio, decreased from $2.11{\pm}0.58\;to\;1.06{\pm}0.26$. Gated blood pool scan provides a noninvasive method of qnantifying valvular regurgitation and assessing the result of surgical interventions.

  • Plain concrete is a brittle material with a very low tensile strength compared to compressive strength and critical tensile strain. This study analyzed the dynamic characteristics of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites based on slurry-infiltrated fiber concrete (SIFCON-based HPFRCC), which maximizes the steel-fiber volume fraction and uses high-strength mortar to increase resistance to loads, such as explosion and impact, with a very short acting time. For major experimental variables, three levels of fiber aspect ratio and five levels of fiber volume fraction between 6.0% and 8.0% were considered, and the flexural strength and toughness characteristics were analyzed according to these variables. Furthermore, three levels of the aspect ratio of used steel fibers were considered. The highest flexural strength of 65.0 MPa was shown at the fiber aspect ratio of 80 and the fiber volume fraction of 7.0%, and the flexural strength and toughness increased proportionally to the fiber volume fraction. The test results according to fiber aspect ratio and fiber volume fraction revealed that after the initial crack, the load of the SIFCON-based HPFRCC continuously increased because of the high fiber volume fraction. In addition, sufficient residual strength was achieved after the maximum strength; this achievement will bring about positive effects on the brittle fracture of structures when an unexpected load, such as explosion or impact, is applied.
