  • This paper describes an automatic 3D models generation algorithm based on 2D silhouette images, using X-ray camera without camera parameters. The algorithm takes a multi steps process approach. First, a series of 2D silhouette images is captured from different directions of object and then converted to binary images. An octree data structure is constructed for voxel-based representation of object. An estimate 3D volume of object can be reconstructed by intersecting voxels and the 2D silhouettes. The marching cube algorithm is applied to get triangle mesh representing of the obtained 3D model for rendering.

  • The bubble point pressures of binary mixtures of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were measured by using a high-pressure experimental apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell, at various $CO_2$ compositions in the range of temperatures above the critical temperature of $CO_2$ and below the critical temperature of DMF. The experimental bubble point pressure data were correlated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR-EOS) to estimate the corresponding dew point compositions at equilibrium with the bubble point compositions. The experimentally measured bubble point pressures gave good agreement with those calculated by the PR-EOS. The variable-volume view cell equipment was verified to be an easy and quick way to measure the bubble point pressures of high-pressure compressible fluid mixtures.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the flood inundation in a low-lying rural area. The study watershed selected for this study includes the Il-Pae and Ahn-Gok watersheds. It is located in the Namyangju, Korea and encompasses $3.64km^2$. A major flood event that occurred in July 2011 was chosen as the case for the flood inundation analysis. The Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) and River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) were used to simulate flood runoff and water surface elevation at each cross-section, respectively. The watershed topographic, soil, and land use data were processed using the GIS (Geographic Information System) tool for the models. The contribution to the total flood volume was estimated based on the results simulated by HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. The results showed that the overflow discharge from the Il-Pae stream constituted 80% of the total flood volume. The contributions of rainfall falling directly on the inundation area and overflow discharge from the Ahn-Gok stream were 15 % and 5 %, respectively. The simulation results in different levee scenarios for the Ahn-Gok stream were also compared. The results indicated that the levee could reduce the flood volume a little bit.

  • The uses of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been expanding in agriculture surveys, obtaining real time updates of dangerous facilities where human access is difficult, disaster monitoring, and 3D modeling. In reality, there is an upsurge in the application of UAVs in fields like, construction, infrastructure, imaging, surveying, surveillance and transportation. Especially, when the slope failure such as landslide occurs, the uses of UAVs are increasing. Since, the UAVs can fly in three dimensions, they are able to obtain spatial data in places where human access is nearly impossible. Despite of these advantages, however, the uses of UAVs are still limited during slope failure. In order to overcome these limitations, this study computes the soil volume change during slope failure through the computation technique using photogrammetric information obtained from UAV system. Through this study, it was found that photogrammetric information from UAV can be used to acquire information on amount of earthworks required for repair works when slope collapse occurs in mountainous areas, where human access in difficult.

  • The Local Volume Mapper(LVM) project in the fifth iteration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) will produce large integral-field spectroscopic survey data to understand the physical conditions of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and other local-volume galaxies. We are developing the LVM Instrument control software. The architecture design of the software follows a hierarchical structure in which the high-level software packages interact with the low-level and mid-level software and hardware components. We adopt the spiral software development model in which the software evolves by iteration of sequential processes, i.e., software requirement analysis, design, code generation, and testing. This spiral model ensures that even after being commissioned, the software can be revised according to new operational requirements. We designed the software by using the Unified Modeling Language, which can visualize functional interactions in structure diagrams. We plan to use the SDSS software framework CLU for the interaction between components, based on the RabbitMQ that implemented the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP).

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for automatically converting and displaying rainfall radar data on a 3D GIS platform. The weather information displayed like rainfall radar data is updated frequently and large-scale. Thus, in order to efficiently display the data, an algorithm to convert and output the data automatically, rather than manually, is required. In addition, since rainfall data is extracted from the space, the use of the display image fused with the 3D GIS data representing the space enhances the visibility of the user. To meet these requirements, this study developed the Auto Data Converter application that analyzes the raw data of the rainfall radar and convert them into a universal format. In addition, Unity 3D, which has good development accessibility, was used for dynamic 3D implementation of the converted rainfall radar data. The software applications developed in this study could automatically convert a large volume of rainfall data into a universal format in a short time and perform 3D modeling effectively according to the data conversion on the 3D platform. Furthermore, the rainfall radar data could be merged with other GIS data for effective visualization.

  • Mesh screen modeling and liquid propellant discharge simulation of surface tension tank were performed using commercial CFD software Flow-3d. $350{\times}2600$, $400{\times}3000$ and $510{\times}3600$ DTW mesh screen were modeled using macroscopic porous media model. Porosity, capillary pressure, and drag coefficient were assigned for each mesh screen model, and bubble point simulations were performed. The mesh screen model was validated with the experimental data. Based on the screen modeling, liquid propellant discharge simulation from PMD tank was performed. NTO was assigned as the liquid propellant, and void was set to flow into the tank inlet to achieve an initial volume flow rate of liquid propellant in $3{\times}10^{-3}g$ acceleration condition. The intial flow pressure drop through the mesh screen was approximately 270 Pa, and the pressure drop increased with time. Liquid propellant discharge was sustained until the flow pressure drop reached approximately 630 Pa, which was near the estimated bubble point value of the screen model.

  • In this study, two dimensional finite volume model was parallelized to improve computing time, which has been developed to be able to apply for the mixed meshes of triangle and quadrilateral. MPI scheme which is free from limitation of the number of cores was applied, and non-blocking point-to-point communication was used for fluxes and time steps calculation domain. The developed model is applied to analyze dam break in a L-shaped experimental channel with $90^{\circ}$ bend and Malpasset dam breach event to calibrate the consistency between parallelized model and existing model and examine the speed-up and efficiency of computing time. Computational speed-up about the size of the input data was considered by simulating 4 cases classified by the number of meshes, Consequently, the simulation results reached a satisfactory accuracy compared to measured data and the results from existing model, and achieved more than 3 times benefit of computational speed-up against computing time of existing model. Simulation results of 3 cases classified by the size of input data lead us to the conclusion that it is important to use proper size of input data and the number of process in order to minimize the communication overhead.

  • A numerical simulation has been carried out for the jet impinging on a flat plate and a semi-circular concave surface. In this computation finite volume method was employed to solve the full Navier-Stokes equation based on a non-orthogonal coordinate with non staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulent model and low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model(Launder-Sharmar model) with Yap's correction were adapted. The accuracy of the numerical calculations were compared with various experimental data reported in the literature and showed good predictions of centerline velocity decay, wall pressure distribution and skin friction. For the jet impingement on a semi-circular concave surface, potential core length was calculated for two different nozzle(round edged nozzle and rectangular edged nozzle) to consider effects of the nozzle shape. The result showed that round edged nozzle had longer potential core length than rectangular edged nozzle for the same condition. Heat transfer rate along the concave surface with constant heat flux was calculated for various nozzle exit to surface distance(H/B) in the condition of same jet velocity. The maximum local Nusselt number at the stagnation point occurred at H/B = 8 where the centerline turbulent intensity had maximum value. The predicted Nusselt number showed good agreement with the experimental data at the stagnation point. However heat transfer predictions along the downstream were underestimated. This results suggest that the improved turbulence modeling is required.
