  • The gas adsorption isotherm requires accurate measurement for the analysis of porous materials and is used as an index of surface area, pore distribution, and adsorption amount of gas. Basically, adsorption isotherms of porous materials are measured conventionally at 77K and 87K using liquid nitrogen and liquid argon. The cold volume calibration in this conventional method is done simply by splitting a sample cell into two zones (cold and warm volumes) by controlling the level sensor in a Dewar filled with liquid nitrogen or argon. As a result, BET measurement for textural properties is mainly limited to liquefied gases (i.e. $N_2$ or Ar) at atmospheric pressure. In order to independently investigate other gases (e.g. hydrogen isotopes) at cryogenic temperature, a novel temperature control system in the sample cell is required, and consequently cold volume calibration at various temperatures becomes more important. In this study, a cryocooler system is installed in a commercially available BET device to control the sample cell temperature, and the automated cold volume calibration method of temperature variation is introduced. This developed calibration method presents a reliable and reproducible method of cryogenic measurement for hydrogen isotope separation in porous materials, and also provides large flexibility for evaluating various other gases at various temperature.

  • This paper proposes a plan which can raise the accuracy of economic benefit estimation in road construction projects. The point of existing economic appraisals may be that the speeds forecasted by models are different from the field speeds because only volumes are calibrated in the road network. The result of such a calibration has an influence on estimating wrong economic benefits in terms of vehicle operating cost savings, travel time savings, and air pollution savings. Then this study performs a calibration when volumes are at the same amount but the calibration between the field speeds and model speeds is different from each other with two different volume-delay functions; the differences of benefits are confirmed according to two different speed calibrations. Three improvement schemes, including the development of a new volume-delay function, are proposed in this study in order to solve the problem of current benefit calculations. The outcome of this study will help practitioners perform more accurate benefit calculations and reasonable economic appraisals.

  • In this paper, we proposed the algorithm computes the waste volume periodically for the way of waste repository standard. For the construction of safe and clear urban environment, it is necessary that we identify the rubbish waste volume and we know the accuracy volume. After camera calibration, we obtained the point cloud on the surface of the object and took this as the input of the calculation algorithm of the object volume. We proposed the two volume calculation algorithms based on the triangularmeshing methods and verified the validity of the algorithm through simulation and real experiments. The proposed algorithm can be used not only as the volume calculation of the waste repository but also as the general volume calculation of a three dimensional object.

  • Respiration is induced by muscular contraction of the chest and abdomen, resulting in the abdominal volume change. Thus, continuous measurement of the abdominal dimension enables to monitor breathing activity. Conductive rubber cord has been previously introduced and tested to develop wearable application for respiratory measurements. This study implemented respiratory monitoring system with the conductive rubber cord in the patient's pants in purpose of quantitative estimation of tidal volume. Air mixed with $0{\sim}5%$ $CO_2$ was inhaled and the respiratory air flow rate, abdominal dimension change, and end tidal $CO_2$ concentration were simultaneously measured in steady state. $CO_2$ inhalation significantly increased the tidal volume in normal physiological state with the subject unawared. The tidal volume estimated from the abdominal dimension change linearly correlated with the tidal volume measured by a pneumotachometer with a correlation coefficient of 0.88. Customized calibration for each subject resulted in relative errors less than 10%. Therefore, the tidal volume was accurately estimated by measuring the abdominal dimension change.

  • This paper address technical issues in calibrating discharge coefficients of sonic nozzles used to measure the volume flow rate of low vacuum dry pumps. The first challenging issue comes from the technical limit that their calibration results available from the flow measurement standard laboratories do not fully cover the low vacuum measurement range although the use of sonic nozzles for precision measurement of gas flow has been well established in NMIs. The second is to make an ultra low flow sonic nozzlesufficient to measure the throughput range of 0.01 mbar-l/s. Those small-sized sonic nozzles do not only achieve the noble stability and repeatability of gas flow but also minimize effects of the fluctuation of down stream pressures for the measurement of the volume flow rate of vacuum pumps. These distinctive properties of sonic nozzles are exploited to measure the pumping speed of low vacuum dry pumps widely used in the vacuum-related academic and industrial sectors. Sonic nozzles have been standard devices for measurement of steady state gas flow, as recommended in ISO 9300. This paper introduces two small-sized sonic nozzles of diameter 0.03 mm and 0.2 mm precisely machined according to ISO 9300. The constant volume flow meter (CVFM) readily set up in the Vacuum center of KRISS was used to calibrate the discharge coefficients of the machined nozzles. The calibration results were shown to determine them within the 3% measurement uncertainty. Calibrated sonic nozzles were found to be applicable for precision measurement of steady state gas flow in the vacuum process. Both calibrated sonic nozzles are demonstrated to provide the precision measurement of the volume flow rate of the dry vacuum pump within one percent difference in reference to CVFM. Calibrated sonic nozzles are applied to a new 'in-situ and in-field' equipment designed to measure the volume flow rate of low vacuum dry pumps in the semiconductor and flat display processes.

  • Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. In this paper, we propose a three dimensional volume reconstruction method, which is an iterative method and as uniform and simulated algebraic reconstruction technique (USART). In this method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed, and also the geometry of the imaging system need to be a priori identified well. That is to say, the relative locations between the x-ray source, imaging plane and the object should be determined exactly by calibration. To achieve this, we propose a series of coordinate calibration methods of the x-ray imaging system using grid pattern images. Some experimental results of these calibrations is presented and discussed in detail ...

  • The application of micro-simulation model has been extended farther with improvement of computer performance and development of complicated model. To make a micro-simulation model accurately replicate field traffic conditions, model calibration is very crucial. Studies on calibration of micro-simulation model have not been enough while lots of studies on calibration of macro-simulation model have been continued in our country. This paper presents an auto-calibration of parameter values in micro-simulation model(VISSIM) using genetic algorithm. RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of collected volume on the urban expressway versus simulated volume is set as MOP(measure of performance) and objective function of optimization is set as to minimize the RMSE. Applying to urban expressway(Nae-bu circular) as a case study, it shows that RMSE of optimized parameter values decrease 60.4%($19.3{\longrightarrow}7.6$) compared to default parameter values and the proposed auto-calibration system is very effective.

  • Equivalent volume estimation of the coupler and two coupled microphones has a key role in standard microphone pressure calibration. The equivalent volume of the microphone is determined by the dynamic characteristics of the diaphragm system and front cavity. Therefore the modal parameters of diaphragm system - natural frequency and damping fatter - should be measured explicitly for the estimation of the equivalent volume. The diaphragm system is composed of the vibrating diaphragm, back slit behind diaphragm, pressure equalization vent, and front cavity which are acoustically coupled. In the measurement, the electrostatic actuator was used to excite the system with the swept sine, and the frequency response was obtained. The close actuator in front of the diaphragm must influence the radiation impedance of the system, and then the modal parameters. From the measured frequency response, the natural frequency and the damping factor could be estimated with the Complex exponential method based on the Prony model and the zero crossing real and imaginary plot.
