This paper proposes a transflective configuration of the dual operating mode liquid crystal display, which has transmissive dynamic and reflective memory parts in its pixel. By employing a wideband structure and optimizing the cell-gap of the liquid crystal layer, the reflective memory part shows a very low reflectance in the dark state, good dispersion properties for the entire visible range, as well as high reflectance in the bright state. The transmissive dynamic part is designed to have the same cell-gap and rubbing direction as those of the reflective part. The driving voltage of the dynamic part and transmittance of the bright state can also be controlled by using compensation film with a positive a-plate, which can compensate the reflective part. Experimental results in the memory part operation demonstrate that the contrast ratio is over 50:1 and the reflectance in the dark state is reduced to 56% on average of that of the conventional dual mode configuration for the entire visible range. The contrast ratio of the dynamic part is 300:1.
In this study, we have investigated the structural and electrical characteristics of IZO thin films deposited on flexible substrate for the OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. For this purpose, PES was used for flexible substrate and IZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering under oxygen ambient gases (Ar, $Ar+O_2$) at room temperature. In order to investigate the influences of the oxygen, the flow rate of oxygen in argon mixing gas has been changed from 0.1sccm to 0.5sccm. All the samples show amorphous structure regardless of flow rate. The electrical resistivity of IZO films increased with increasing flow rate of $O_2$ under $Ar+O_2$. All the films showed the average transmittance over 85% in the visible range. The OLED device was fabricated with different IZO electrodes made by configuration of IZO/a-NPD/DPVB/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al to elucidate the performance of IZO substrate. OLED devices with the amorphous-IZO (a-IZO) anode film show better current density-voltage-luminance characteristics than that of OLED devices with the commercial crystalline-ITO (c-ITO) anode film. It can be explained that very flat surface roughness and high work function of a-IZO anode film lead to more efficient hole injection by reduction of interface barrier height between anode and organic layers. This suggests that a-IZO film is a promising anode materials substituting conventional c-ITO anode in OLED devices.

The solar cell is a device to convert light energy into electric, which supplies power to the external load when exposed to the incident light. The photocurrent and voltage occurred in the device are significant factors to decide the output power of solar cells. The crystalline silicon solar cell module has photocurrent loss due to light reflections on the glass and EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). These photocurrent loss would be a hinderance for high-efficiency solar cell module. In this paper, the quantitative analysis for the photocurrent losses in the 300-1200 wavelength region was performed. The simulation method with MATLAB was used to analyze the reflection on a front glass and EVA layer. To investigate the intensity of light that reached solar cells in PV(Photovoltaic) module, the reflectance and transmittance of PV modules was calculated using the Fresnel equations. The simulated photocurrent in each wavelength was compared with the output of real solar cells and the manufactured PV module to evaluate the reliability of simulation. As a result of the simulation, We proved that the optical loss largely occurred in wavelengths between 300 and 400 nm.

The Liquid Crystal (LC) alignment uniformity is very important in LC devices. The alignment mechanism of LC molecules on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface is very important for both LC fundamental research and application. So, Generally a rubbing method to align LC has been widely used to mass-produce LCD panels. But because rubbing method is contact method between rubbing fabric and indium-tin-oxide glass or flexible substrate, rubbing method has some defects, such as the electrode charges and the creation of contaminating particles. Thus we strongly recommend a non-contact alignment technique for getting rid of some defects of rubbing method. Most recently, the LC aligning capabilities achieved by ion-beam exposure on the organic and nonorganic thin film surface have been reported successfully. In this research, we studied the tilt angle generation and electro-optical performances for a NLC on homeotropic polyimide surfaces with ion-beam exposure. The LC aligning capabilities of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on a homeotropic PI surface using a new ion-beam method were studied. On the homeotropic PI surface, the tilt angle of the NLC by exposure ion-beam had a tendency to decrease as increased ion-beam energy density. And, on the homeotropic PI surface, the alignment character of the NLC with respect to ion-beam energy was good. And we achieved satisfactory result for EO character.

In this study, liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for vertical alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film by thermal evaporation method were investigated. Also, the control of pretilt angles and thermal stabilities of the NLC treated on $CeO_x$ thin film were investgated. The uniform LC alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film surfaces and good thermal stabilities with thermal evaporation can be achieved. It is considerated that the LC alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film by thermal evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $CeO_x$ thin film surface created by evaporation. In addition, it can be achieved the good electro-optical (EO) properties of the VA-LCD on $CeO_x$ thin film layer with oblique thermal evaporation.

The electrical and optical properties of amorphous In-Tin-Zinc-Oxide(ITZO) deposited at room temperature using rf-magnetron sputtering were investigated. The amorphous ITZO thin films were obtained at the composition of In:Sn:Zn = 6:2:2, 4:3:3, and 2:4:4, but the ITZO (8:1:1) showed a crystalline phase of bixbyite structure of In2O3. The resistivity of ITZO could be controlled by oxygen pressure in the sputtering ambient. The resistivity of post-annealed ITZO thin films exhibited the dependence on the amount of Indium. Optical energy band gap and transmittance increased as the amount of indium in ITZO increased. For the device application with ITZO, the bottom-gated thin-film transistor using ITZO as a active channel layer was fabricated. It showed a threshold voltage of 1.42V and an on/off ratio of $5.63{\times}10^7$ operated with saturation field-effect mobility of $14.2cm^2/V{\cdot}s$.

Recently, TFTs based on amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOSs) such as ZnO, InZnO, ZnSnO, GaZnO, TiOx, InGaZnO(IGZO), SnGaZnO, etc. have been attracting a grate deal of attention as potential alternatives to existing TFT technology to meet emerging technological demands where Si-based or organic electronics cannot provide a solution. Since, in 2003, Masuda et al. and Nomura et al. have reported on transparent TFTs using ZnO and IGZO as active layers, respectively, much efforts have been devoted to develop oxide TFTs using aforementioned amorphous oxide semiconductors as their active layers. In this thesis, I report on the performance of thin-film transistors using amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides for an active channel layer at room temperature. $SiO_2$ was employed as the gate dielectric oxide. The amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering. The carrier concentration of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide was controlled by oxygen pressure in the sputtering ambient. Devices are realized that display a threshold voltage of 1.5V and an on/off ration of > $10^9$ operated as an n-type enhancement mode with saturation mobility with $9.06\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$. The devices show optical transmittance above 80% in the visible range. In conclusion, the fabrication and characterization of thin-film transistors using amorphous indium gallium zinc oxides for an active channel layer were reported. The operation of the devices was an n-type enhancement mode with good saturation characteristics.

The field of liquid crystal display (LCD) is constantly in the spotlight and the process of depositing an alignment layer in the LCD manufacturing process is very important to obtain excellent performance such as low-power driving and high-speed response to improve LCD performance. Therefore, research on liquid crystal (LC) alignment is being actively conducted. When manufacturing LCD, it is necessary to consider the effect of the alignment layer thickness as one of the factors affecting various LCD performances. In addition, previous studies confirmed the LC alignment characteristics correlate with the rotation speed in the spin coating process. Therefore, the electro-optical properties of the LCD were investigated by manufacturing a polyimide alignment layer by varying the rotation speed in the spin coating process in this study. It was confirmed that the thickness of the polyimide alignment layer was controlled according to the spin coating conditions. The average transmittances of anti-parallel LC cells at the spin coating speed of 2,500 rpm and 3,000 rpm are about 60%, which indicates that the LC cell has relatively higher performance. At the spin coating speed of 3,000 rpm, the voltage-transmittance curve of twisted nematic (TN) LC cell was below 1.5 V, which means that the TN LC cell operated at a low power. In addition, high-speed operating characteristics were confirmed with a response time of less than 30 ms. From these derived data, we confirmed that the ideal spin coating speed is 3,000 rpm. And these results provide an optimized polyimide alignment layer process when considering enhanced future LCD manufacturing.
In this study, we propose a liquid crystal-based polarization control technology that can control polarization by adjusting the voltage applied to the liquid crystal, and apply it to a Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) to transmit only the desired angle of polarized light. CCTV with conventional polarizing films cannot control polarization because they focus on backlight compensation, so light reflected from the water surface or highlights reflected from vehicles interfere with subject identification. However, the Vertical Alignment mode allows the polarization to be adjusted electrically, so that only the polarized light at the user's desired angle is transmitted, eliminating reflected highlights. The images obtained using this technique are optimized by computer software. Liquid crystal polarization panels, which can electrically control the polarization angle, transmittance, and polarization rate, have been applied to polarized image monitoring device to improve subject identification in conventional CCTV.

A hybrid thin film was prepared by doping reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into a sol-gel solution mixed with aluminum, titanium, and strontium using a brush coating method. The annealing temperature was carried out at 160, 260, and 360℃, and the difference in oxidation reaction was observed. The sol-gel solution created during the membrane manufacturing process generates a contractile force due to the shear stress of the brush bristles, forming a microgroove structure. This structure was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy analysis, and the presence of rGO was clearly revealed. As the annealing temperature increases, the oxidation and reduction reactions on the thin film surface become more active, so the intensity of the surface mixture increases. Moreover, the electro-optical properties were stabilized and improved by increasing the intensity of the mixtures. Likewise, the voltage-capacitance values are also significantly improved. Lastly, the transmittance measurement showed that it was suitable for liquid crystal display application.
