Optimal Pixel Design for Low Driving Single Gamma Curve and Single Gap Transflective Fringe Field Switching Display (단일갭 반투과 FFS 액정 디스플레이를 위한 최적 화소 디자인)

  • When a dielectric layer, in-cell retarder (ICR) is formed between electrode and LC layer to get a single gap transflective fringe-field switching (FFS) display, the operating voltage ($V_{op}$) is highly increased due to the thickness of dielectric material. But, we also knew the phenomenon that the increasing rate of Vop is different whether the 1st common electrode was composed of plate type or slit type. In this paper, the common electrode in transmissive part was composed of slit type which had less steepness effect of the Vop and in reflective part was composed of plate type. The rubbing angle of reflective part can be adjusted properly to match the voltage dependent transmittance and reflectance.

Characteristic of AZO Thin Film Deposited by Facing Targets Sputtering with Magnetic Field Type (FTS장치의 자계 분포에 따라 제작된 AZO 박막의 특성)

  • We investigated magnetic field, discharged voltage, and as-deposited film uniformity at facing targets sputtering (FTS) system with magnetic field type: i) concentrated and ii) distributed magnetic field type. And Al doped ZnO (AZO) films were prepared at two magnetic field type such as concentrated magnetic field type and distributed magnetic field type, respectively. Discharge voltage at the distribution type is lower than concentration type due to low magnetic flux (middle magnetic flux: Concentration 1200 G and Distribution 600 G). The films deposited at the distributed magnetic field were more uniform than concentration type. All of prepared AZO films had a resistivity of under $10^{-4}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ and a transmittance of more than 85 % in the visible range.

  • We have developed an novel vertical-alignment (VA) - $\pi$ cell mode that provides a wide viewing angle and fast response times for negative dielectric anisotropy nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surfaces. We had the good voltage-transmittance curves and low driving voltages were achieved with the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode without negative compensation film. Iso-viewing angle characteristics using the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode without negative compensation film of NLC was also successfully observed. As well a fast response time of 31.7ms for the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode was measured. Consequently, It is seen that by using the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode the iso-viewing angle, fast response time, and low driving voltage characteristics can be achieved.

  • We have realized static image on organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using photoluminescence degradation. Ultraviolet (UV) was irradiated to the glass side of device. UV power was 350 Wand the wavelength was 365 nm. The UV irradiation gives rise to the degradation of photoluminescence. Due to the degradation, the current density-voltage curve was shifted to the higher voltage side and the luminescence was also degraded by the current and photoluminescence drop. The negative imaged films were prepared to control the transmittance of UV. The UV light was passed through the film. By this method, the film image was transferred to the device with reversed image and the static image was realized on the OLED.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of TN(twisted nematic)-LCD(liquid crystal display) with photo-dimerized on a PMCh(poly(4'methacryoyloxylchalcone)) surface using a new photo-dimerization method was studied. The excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of TN-LCD with photo-dimerized on a PNCh surface for 1 min. using a new photo-dimerization method was observed. Also, the voltage-hold-ing-ratio(VHR) of TN-LCD with photo-dimerized on a PMCh surface using a new photo-dimerization method is higher than that of conventional photo-dimerization method. Consequently, we suggest that the new photo-dimerization method. Consequently, we suggest that the new photo-dimerization method for LC aligning is the most promising rubbing-free techniques.

  • We synthesised a novel photo-alignment material of PCEMA (poly(cinnamolyethyl methacrylate)) on photo-dimerization reaction. Next we investigated the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on PCEHA surface. The excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface were obtained. The threshold voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing the UV light irradiation time on PCEMA surface. Also, the response time of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface is almost the same as rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

A Study of Characteristic based on Working Pressure of ITO Electrode for Display (디스플레이용 ITO 전극의 동작 압력에 따른 특성 연구)

  • In this paper, Characteristics of the ITO thin film deposited were analyzed using DC magnetron sputtering in order to investigate the deposition conditions of ITO thin film for transparent electrode. The experiment conditions were atmospheric pressure from 1 to 3[mTorr] with 1 [mTorr] step, bias electric voltage ranged from 260[V] to 330[V] with 10[V] step. The transmittance, refractive index and surface and cross-sectional shape of the deposited thin film were measured with an UV.-VIS. spectrophotometer, ellipsometer and SEM. Such condition as 1~2[mTorr] and near 300[V] voltage the transmittance was over 90[%] and the refractive index more than 2. Therefore, it was confirmed that the appropriate condition for making a highly transparent conductive electrode.

  • AZO transparent conducting thin film were fabricated by DC magnetron sputtering using the Zn: Al (2% aluminu contained ) alloy target with inducing microwave to the plasma, and the effect of microwave was studied. The optical transmittance, the resistivity and dynamic deposition rate at the applied voltage to target of 420 V was 50~70%, $ 5.5{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}$cm and 6,000 $\AA\textrm{mm}^2$/J, respectively. After annealing AZO coated glass at $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, the light transmittance was increased to 80% and electrical conductivity was also increased two times, reached to resistivity of $2.0{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}$cm.

The electro-optical characteristics of PDLC (PDLC의 전기광학적 특성)

  • Recently, the PDLC(Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) is being developed lively to make a large display device using a liquid crystal. Because of low light loss, high brightness, and simple fabrication process, it is made easily to large display device, In this study, the response time and light transmittance by the applied voltage is measured to analyze the electro-optical characteristics of PDLC. The He-Ne laser is applied to the PDLC cell, the light transmittance is measured using the photodiode and the result is analyzed and displayed graphically by the digital oscilloscope. The result of comparison between the PDLC and the present LCD is used to study the potential as a display device.
