A multi-pulse GTO based voltage source converter (VSC) topology together with a fundamental frequency switching mode of gate control is a mature technology being widely used in static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs). The present practice in utility/industry is to employ a high number of pulses in the STATCOM, preferably a 48-pulse along with matching components of magnetics for dynamic reactive power compensation, voltage regulation, etc. in electrical networks. With an increase in the pulse order, need of power electronic devices and inter-facing magnetic apparatus increases multi-fold to achieve a desired operating performance. In this paper, a competitive topology with a fewer number of devices and reduced magnetics is evolved to develop an 18-pulse, 2-level $\pm$ 100MVAR STATCOM in which a GTO-VSC device is operated at fundamental frequency switching gate control. The inter-facing magnetics topology is conceptualized in two stages and with this harmonics distortion in the network is minimized to permissible IEEE-519 standard limits. This compensator is modeled, designed and simulated by a SimPowerSystems tool box in MATLAB platform and is tested for voltage regulation and power factor correction in power systems. The operating characteristics corresponding to steady state and dynamic operating conditions show an acceptable performance.

In this paper, the characteristics of portable fuel cell system are introduced and the dynamic response of output voltage of fuel cell stack with internal humidifier is analyzed. When the output of the fuel cell (FC) stack is short-circuited for humidification, the output voltage of the FC stack rapidly drops. In order to maintain the load voltage in the required range, dynamic compensation methods are proposed: 1) installing a capacitor behind the output of the FC stack; 2) utilizing the bi-directional converter. Especially, bi-directional converter is used when short of the FC output is detected or predicted by algorithm using data which is measured during previous three cycles. These methods are simulated by PSIM 9.0, then experimental results from the fuel cell system prototype verify the validity of the proposed methods.
Recently, the development of renewable energy using solar energy is drawing attention. One of these PV systems, the Dual buck Inverter, is one of the topologies used in conjunction with the system, characterized by high efficiency and shoot-through reduction. However, current distortion appears severely in grid connection. So, in this paper, the method of compensation through PR controller was verified through simulation as an analysis of current distortion components and a control method to improve them.
This paper presents a single-phase asymmetric half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter based series active power filter (SAPF) for harmonic voltage compensation. The effect of level number on performance of the proposed SAPF is examined in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) and system efficiency. Besides, the relationship between the level number and the number of switching device are compared with the other multilevel inverter topologies used in APF applications. The paper is also aimed to demonstrate the capability of the SAPF for compensating harmonic voltages alone, without using a passive power filter (PPF). To obtain the required output voltage, a new switching algorithm is developed. The proposed SAPF with levels of 7, 15 and 31 is used in both simulation and experimental studies and the harmonic voltages of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) is compensated under two different loading conditions. Furthermore, very high system efficiency values such as 98.74% and 96.84% are measured in the experimental studies and all THD values are brought into compliance with the IEEE-519 Standard. As a result, by increasing the level number of the inverter, lower THD values can be obtained even under high harmonic distortion levels while system efficiency almost remains the same.
The switching dead time avoiding a bridge leg short circuit in PWM voltage source inverter produces distortions of the controlling inverter output performance such as current waveform, voltage vector, and torque. In this paper, the influence of dead time is investigated. The on-line space voltage vector modulation method is used for current controller. It is possible to compensate dead time by space voltage vector modulation which generates additional pulse compensating voltage distortion caused by dead time. In addition, narrow pulse which is generally neglected can be compensated. All the algorithms, including field-oriented control are performed by one chip microprocessor 80C196MC and DSP TMS320C31. Experimental results probe that the proposed scheme provides a good inverter output performance.

The power quality of Single Phase Grid-Connected Inverters (GCIs) has received much attention with the increasing number of Distributed Generation (DG) systems. However, the performance of single phase GCIs get degraded due to several factors such as the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effect, and the turn ON/OFF of the switches, which causes the harmonics at the output of GCIs. Therefore, it is not easy to satisfy the harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 without the help of harmonic compensator. To meet the harmonic standards a certain kind of harmonic controller needs to be added to the current control loop to effectively mitigate the low order harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic compensation is performed using a novel robust harmonic compensation method based on Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA). In the proposed technique, DLAs are used to extract the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics from the output current and compensate it by using a simple PI controller in the feedforward manner. In order to show the superior performance of the proposed harmonic compensation technique, it is compared with those of conventional harmonic compensation methods in terms of the effectiveness of harmonic elimination, complexity, and implementation. The validity of the proposed harmonic compensation techniques for the single phase GCIs is verified through the experimental results with a 5kW single phase GCI. Index Terms -Single Phase Grid Connected Inverter (SPGCI), Harmonic Compensation Method, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Harmonic Standard.

This paper presents an improved sensorless vector control system for high performance induction motor drives fed by a matrix converter with non-linearity compensation. The nonlinear voltage distortion that is caused by commutation delay and on-state voltage drop in switching devices is corrected by a new matrix converter model. A Reduced Order Extended Luenberger Observer (ROELO) is employed to bring better response in the whole speed operation range and a method to select the observer gain is presented. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the performance of the proposed system.

This paper proposes a combined fuzzy adaptive sliding-mode voltage controller (FASVC) for a three-phase UPS inverter. The proposed FASVC encapsulates two control terms: a fuzzy adaptive compensation control term, which solves the problem of parameter uncertainties, and a sliding-mode feedback control term, which stabilizes the error dynamics of the system. To extract precise load current information, the proposed method uses a conventional load current observer instead of current sensors. In addition, the stability of the proposed control scheme is fully guaranteed by using the Lyapunov stability theory. It is shown that the proposed FASVC can attain excellent voltage regulation features such as a fast dynamic response, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and a small steady-state error under sudden load disturbances, nonlinear loads, and unbalanced loads in the existence of the parameter uncertainties. Finally, experimental results are obtained from a prototype 1 kVA three-phase UPS inverter system via a TMS320F28335 DSP. A comparison of these results with those obtained from a conventional sliding-mode controller (SMC) confirms the superior transient and steady-state performances of the proposed control technique.

The ability to provide quality power has become a significant issue in power systems. The main causes of poor power quality are harmonic currents, poor power factor, supply-voltage variations, etc. A technique of achieving both active current distortion compensation, power factor correction and also mitigating the supply-voltage variation (sag or swell) at the load side is presented in this paper. The operation and rating issues of the proposed Single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner are also highlighted. To reduce the total cost while simultaneously increasing the performance, the system is fully digitally controlled using the fixed-point TMS320F240 digital signal processor. The performances of the UPQC, which is composed by shunt and series PWM controlled-converters, have been verified on a laboratory prototype.
This paper proposes a control method for grid-connected inverter systems under unbalanced and distorted grid voltage. The proposed method can reduce the power ripple caused by the unbalanced condition and compensate for the low-order harmonics of the output currents caused by the distortion of grid voltage. To reduce the power ripple, our method replaces the two conventional PI controllers with one PR controllers in the stationary frame. PR controllers can implement selective harmonic compensation without excessive computational requirements; the use of these controllers simplifies the method. Both the simulated and experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis.
