Objectives : This study was to assess the effectiveness of Oriental medical treatment on carpal tunnel syndrome, comparing its outcome with that of Western medical treatment. Methods : After being diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome by electromyography, subjects were enrolled in Kyung Hee Medical Center from March 2006 to January 2007. We prescribed Kejibokryung-hwan to the Oriental medical therapy group (OM group) and NSAIDS to the Western medical therapy group (WM group). Effectiveness was assessed by degree of pain using visual analog scale (VAS) before and after 3 weeks' treatment. Adverse effects were also monitored. Results : There were 21 patients in the OM group and 19 in the WM group. No statistical significant difference was detected at the baseline assessment. After 3 weeks of medication, pain was reduced about 26% in the OM group and 46% in the WM group. These findings might be explained by that more than half of the WM group received local steroid injection, which has been known to have more rapid analgesic effect that oral medication. Although pain reduction rate was higher in the WM group than in the OM group, we suggest that Oriental medical treatment is still effective, faking into consideration the fact that completely recovered cases were found only in the OM group. No adverse effect was found in either of the groups. Conclusion : This work could help us to understand the effectiveness of Oriental medical treatment on carpal tunnel syndrome.
Objectives : The Purpose of this study is to report in patient with common peroneal nerve palsy, who improved by oriental medical treatament. Methods : We Checked the temperature of a leg by Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI) at intervals of 10 days, angle of active dorsiflexion and range of active motion for estimating the improvement of symptoms. We used the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) for estimating the degree of pain, too. Results : After 4 weeks treatment, the movement and power of ankle joint improved to nearly normal range. The degree of active dorsiflexion of the ankle increased from $-40^{\circ}\;to\;15^{\circ}$ and range of active motion increased from Gr III to Gr I. The difference of temperature between the both legs decreased remarkably. Conclusion : In this case we experienced improvement of symptoms by conservative oriental medical therapy, e.g acupuncture stimulation, herbal medication, physical therapy. It should be needed further investigation on common peroneal nerve palsy and its symptoms in order to set up a reasonable standard about a surgical operation.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between acupuncture therapy on knee osteoarthritis and BMI. Methods : Data on assessment measurements of knee osteoarthritis and obesity were obtained from 31 patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis from May, 2011 to September, 2012. The assesment measurements consisted of body mass index(BMI), visual analogue scale(VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities(WOMAC) index. Statistical correlations among assessment measurements were evaluated by examining the Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results : 1. The average age of all patients was $58.87{\pm}9.48$(male : $63.67{\pm}11.34$, female : $57.72{\pm}8.86$). 2. The average BMI of all patients was $25.41{\pm}3.06kg/m^2$. According to clinical definition of obesity by Korean Society for the Study of Obesity, 25.81% of all patients was within normal weight, 25.81% was overweight, 38.71% was obesity and 9.67% was morbid obesity. 3. There were no significant correlations in statistics among assessment measurements. Conclusions : There is significant correlation between knee osteoarthritis and obesity according to many clinical and experimental researches. So more studies on correlation between knee osteoarthritis and obesity and development of assessment measurement are needed.

This study to investigated the therapeutic effect of robot-assisted rehabilitation (Lokomat) with virtual reality (VR) on Pusher syndrome (PS) after stroke. A total of 10 patients presented with PS after stroke were recruited. The participants were divided into two groups: Lokomat (n=5) and control groups (n=5). Lokomat and conventional physical therapy (CPT) were performed together in the experimental group, and the patients in the control group were treated with CPT only twice a day. One session of intervention was carried out for 30 minutes five times per week for 4 weeks. Scale for contraversive pushing (SCP), Berg balance scale (BBS), falling index (FI), and Timed up and go test (TUG) were measured before and after the intervention. The Lokomat group produced significantly better outcomes in SCP (p=0.046), BBS (p=0.046), FI (p=0.038), and TUG (p=0.038) compared with the control group after 4 weeks of intervention. In addition, there were significant correlations between SCP and BBS (p=0.024), FI (p=0.039), and TUG (p=0.030). In conclusion, Lokomat with VR more effectively aided recovery from PS after stroke, and restoration of PS symptoms was related with improvement of balance and gait function.

Objective To compare the pain-reducing effect of forest bathing alone versus forest bathing in combination with stretching and strengthening exercises in patients with chronic posterior neck pain. Methods Sixty-four subjects with posterior neck pain that had lasted more than 3 months were enrolled. They were randomly divided into a forest bathing alone (FBA) group and a forest bathing with exercise (FBE) group; each group included 32 subjects. All subjects from both groups walked every morning in the forest for about 2 hours for 5 days. In the afternoon, the FBE group did a stretching and strengthening exercise for about 4 hours; the FBA group had free time in the woods. Visual analog scale (VAS) on one day, VAS over the previous week, neck disability index (NDI), EuroQol 5D-3L VAS (EQ VAS) and index (EQ index), McGill pain questionnaire (MPQ), the number of trigger points in the posterior neck region (TRPs), and the range of motion of the cervical spine were evaluated on the first and last day of the program and compared between the two groups. Results The number of TRPs were significantly reduced in the FBE group compared with the FBA group (p=0.013). However, the other scales showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion When patients with chronic posterior neck pain underwent a short-term forest bathing (less than 7 days) program, FBE was more effective in the reduction of the number of TRPs than FBA. However, all other pain measurement scales we evaluated showed no statistically significant difference between the two protocols.
Recently, incorrect and unhealthy postures have become increasingly prevalent due to reasons such as smartphone use. Consequently, imbalanced muscle contraction occurs. In particular, if the oblique muscle is contracted, the accessory nerve will be compressed, causing ischemic pain in the upper trapezius muscle. To investigate the effect on pain in the upper trapezius muscle, this study applied the ischemic compression method to the accessory nerve capture point at the 1/3-point of the oblique cervical muscle. In this study, the ischemic compression method was applied to eight women twice a week for four weeks, and pain was evaluated before, immediately after, and three weeks after application. The visual analogue scale, McGill Pain Questionnaire, and pressure dynamometer were used to evaluate subjects' pain. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the pain was significantly reduced after treatment, and that the pain reduction was still effective three weeks after completion of the intervention, indicating that the intervention on the accessory nerve compression point on the oblique cervical muscle was both effective and long-lasting for pain reduction in the upper trapezius muscle. Future studies should increase the number of subjects to check not only pain reduction in the upper trapezius muscle, but also improvement of neck function.

This study was to investigate the effect of therapeutic exercise with electrical stimulation on knee joint pain, range of motion and muscle strength in patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The subjects of this study were recruited who diagnosed with anterior cruciate ligament rupture and undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, total of 20 patients were randomly divided to the 10 control groups and 10 experimental groups. The therapeutic exercise was carried out for 3 weeks with three exercises made by referring to the previous study. The measurement tools used were knee joint pain measurements were made using the visual analogue scale, range of motion was measured using a goniometer, and the muscle strength was measured using a handheld dynamometer. In the statistical analysis, to compare about pre and post test the difference in each same groups was accomplished by using the paired t-test, and compare the difference between the different each groups was accomplished by using the independent t-test. The results of the study showed that the experimental group showed significantly enhanced results than the control group(p<.05). Based on these results, it is concluded that it is effective for the recovery of the patient if the therapeutic exercise with electrical stimulation in parallel with knee joint therapy are performed for the patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of individual board game program (IBGP) on cognitive function and depression level in 7 elderly people with mild cognitive impairment(MCI). We used the mini-mental state examination korean version (MMSE-K), montreal cognitive assessment korean version (MoCA-K), and korean form of geriatric depression scale(KGDS). The results showed significant differences in MMSE-K before, after, and follow-up(p<0.05), and there were differences of orientation for time, place, and object and attention in before, after, and follow-up(p<0.05). MoCA-K showed differences in before, after, and follow-up assessments(p<0.01), and showed differences in visual construction skill, orientation, and short-term memory(p<0.05). Finally, there was a difference in depression level before, after, and follow-up of KGDS(p<0.01). Therefore, IBGP for the elderly can help improve the cognitive function, and based on this, it is expected that an advanced IBGP will be applied to improve orientation for time and place in the elderly.
