This study was designed to investigate the effects of the progressive muscle relaxation on behavioral states and emotional reactions of adolescent athletes. The participants were 167 adolescent male soccer players aged between 12 and 18 who were junior or high school students in Seoul. Ninety-three of them were assigned to the experimental group, while seventy-four to the control group. The experimental group was treated by 10 sessions (20 min./session) of Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation for two weeks, while the control group was not treated. The self and observer reported behavioral states, general stress by visual analogue scale, physical symptoms of stress, athletic stress, state anxiety, depression, self-esteem were measured before and after two weeks of the progressive muscle relaxation. The results were as follows ; 1. The self and observer reported behavioral states were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with the control group. 2. The general stress and the gastrointestinal symptoms of stress were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with the control group. No significant difference on athletic stress was found between the two groups. The depression and the state anxiety were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with the control group. The self-esteem was significantly increased in the experimental group compared with the control group. 3. The influential factors on behavioral state of adolescent male athlete were depression and state anxiety. The accelerating factor on behavioral state change after the progressive muscle relaxation was state anxiety. These results are suggested that the progressive muscle relaxation could be effective in stabilizing behavioral state, decreasing general stress, gastrointestinal symptoms of stress, depression, state anxiety, in increasing self-esteem of adolescent male athletes. And the behavioral state change after the progressive muscle relaxation was influenced by state anxiety.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of foot reflexology on premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea in female college students. The research design of this study was a quasi-experimental design. Of the forty female college students, twenty were assigned to the experimental group and, twenty to the control group. The data were obtained over 2 months(November 26, 2001 to January 31, 2002) from a nursing of C college located in S city. The instrument used to assess premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea was Keele's VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) and opening records. Subjects in the experimental group received foot reflexology for 6 times with 1 hours during 60 days, and subjects assigned to the control group did not receive foot reflexology. Data were analysed with percentage, mean, standard deviation, $x^2$-test, unpaired t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA, using SAS Program. The results of the study are as follow, 1.The symptoms which the group of experimental and the group of control discomforts the most are sensitiveness(35%), abdominal pain (30%),lower abdominal pain (30%) and lumbago (20%). The method of relieve premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea by which the subjects employ the most to solve their premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea is the getting along by enduring(67.5%) and bed rest (32.5%). 2.The mean score of the premenstrual syndromes and dysmenorrhea before foot reflexology was 8.35, it was 4.16 at the first menstruation after foot reflexology and 3.25 at the second menstruation for the experimental group. 3.The relieved symptoms after foot reflexology was fatigue(50%), insomnia(40%), abdominal pain(35%), lower abdominal pain (30%) and constipation(30%). Foot reflexology was effective in improve the symptoms of the female college students who have the premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea.

742 cases of thyroid diseases treated at Radio-isotope Clinic, Seoul National University Hospital since October 1965 through July 1968 were analyzed. The patients were classified according to eye findings, as to Infiltrative, Non-infiltrative and No ophthalmopathy. Correlations between ophthalmological findings and symptoms, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate as well as response to medical treatment were carefully reviewed. Results obtained were as follows: 1. Among goitrous patients 44.5% with infiltrative ophthalmopathy, 24.1% with non-infiltrative ophthalmopathy totaling 68.6% of patients with one or more eye findings were found. Exophthalmos (44%) and visual disturbances (44%) comprised the highest incidence among eye signs. Most frequent eye symptoms were lid swelling (17.1%). 2. Female patients were predominant(91%). 3. Of cases with hyperthyroidism, after treatment with antithyroid drugs and radio-iodine therapy, general symptoms were improved in over 74%, whereas ophthalmopathy was not changed and in some cases the eye signs were aggravated. This tendency was more apparent in infiltrative ophthalmopathy. 4. Significant correlations between exophthalmos, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate were found. Among the patients of same degree of exophthalmos, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate showed the highest in non-infiltrative ophthalmopathy, moderate in infiltrative ophthalmopathy and the lowest in no ophthalmopathy.
The purpose of this study was to identify correlation of stress, coping patterns and physical symptoms in cancer patient's caregiver. The stress was measured by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale). The coping methods were measured using the modified Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Yang (1998) and the actual physical symptoms were investigated. The phases of patient illness consisted of 1st (initial) stage, and 2nd (recurred) stage and 3rd (terminal) stage based on literature (Lewandowski & Jones, 1988). The data were collected by a survey conducted from March to July, 2000 and which included 196 cancer patients' caregivers from two hospitals in Seoul. The data were analyzed using paired t-test, unpaired t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The average of caregivers' stress scores was 62.5. Problem-focused coping methods were significantly used more than emotion-focused coping methods by the cancer patients' caregiver. The mean number of caregivers' physical symptom was 1.03. 2. There were significantly high level of stress in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had a low education level, those who had no job, those who are patients' wives' and those who are terminal patients' caregiver. There were significantly low levels of coping in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had low education levels, those who had no job and those who are patients' wives. There were significantly higher number of physical symptoms in women, and those who have no job. 3. Caregivers' stress was significantly correlated to problem-focused coping methods (r=-.21, p=.006), and physical symptom (r=-.28, p=.0001). In conclusion, attempts to develop nursing interventions for cancer patients' caregiver in women, those who are more than 60 years old, with a low education level, have no job, and are cancer patients' wives could have an improvement on positive coping methods and provide relaxation from stress in the patients' experience.

Objective : Discal cyst is rare and causes indistinguishable symptoms from lumbar disc herniation. The clinical manifestations and pathological features of discal cyst have not yet been completely known. Discal cyst has been treated with surgery or with direct intervention such as computed tomography (CT) guided aspiration and steroid injection. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the percutaneous endoscopic surgery for lumbar discal cyst over at least 6 months follow-up. Methods: All 8 cases of discal cyst with radiculopathy were treated by percutaneous endoscopic surgery by transforaminal approach. The involved levels include L5-S1 in 1 patient, L3-4 in 2, and L4-5 in 5. The preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and 3-dimensional CT with discogram images in all cases showed a connection between the cyst and the involved intervertebral disc. Over a 6-months period, self-reported measures were assessed using an outcome questionaire that incorporated total back-related medical resource utilization and improvement of leg pain [visual analogue scale (VAS) and Macnab's criteria]. Results : All 8 patients underwent endoscopic excision of the cyst with additional partial discectomy. Seven patients obtained immediate relief of symptoms after removal of the cyst by endoscopic approach. There were no recurrent lesions during follow-up period. The mean preoperative VAS for leg pain was $8.25{\pm}0.5$. At the last examination followed longer than 6 month, the mean VAS for leg pain was $2.25{\pm}2.21$. According to MacNab' criteria, 4 patients (50%) had excellent results, 3 patients (37.5%) had good results; thus, satisfactory results were achieved in 7 patients (87.5%). However, one case had unsatisfactory result with persistent leg pain and another paresthesia. Conclusion : The radicular symptoms were remarkably improved in most patients immediately after percutaneous endoscopic cystectomy by transforaminal approach.
Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome that evokes either myopathy or cola-colored urine with elevated creatine kinase and myoglobin levels. The most common complication of rhabdomyolysis is acute renal failure (ARF). A large quantity of fluid must be injected promptly the first time symptoms appear, whereas sequela of symptoms has remained in the long run. In this report, a 58-year-woman was diagnosed with ARF due to rhabdomyolysis induced by exercise, alcohol, and medication. A treatment of acupuncture and herbal medicines was carried out for over 2 months. To evaluate the condition of the patient's lower limb, a short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), and Manual Muscle Test (MMT) points were used. As a result, clinical symptoms and quality of life improved noticeably after treatment with Korean medicine. This suggests that Korean medicine has an effect on rhabdomyolysis.
Bt-cotton germplasm, consisting of 75 genotypes was evaluated against cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) under high inoculum pressure in the field and using graft inoculation in glasshouse by visual symptom scoring assessments. None of the tested genotype was found disease free under both evaluation tests. Under field conditions in 2011, 3 genotypes were found resistant, 4 moderately resistant, 3 tolerant, 2 moderately susceptible and one susceptible; in 2012, 3 genotypes were tolerant, 7 moderately susceptible, 5 susceptible and 38 highly susceptible; in 2013, one was moderately susceptible and 51 were highly susceptible with varying degree of percent disease index (PDI) and severity index (SI). However, through graft evaluation in glasshouse, none of the graft inoculated plant was symptomless. All tested genotypes showed disease symptoms with SI values ranging between 5.0 and 6.0, and latent period between 12 and 14 days. Of the 75 genotypes evaluated using graft inoculation, 11 were found susceptible with SI values of 5.0 to 5.4 while remaining 64 were highly susceptible with SI values of 5.5 to 6.0. Inoculated plants of all tested genotypes exhibited severe disease symptoms within 10 days after the appearance of initial symptoms. No reduction in SI value was observed until the end of the experiment i.e., 90 days after grafting. Information generated under the present study clearly demonstrates that no sources of resistance to CLCuD are available among the tested Bt-cotton genotypes. So, a breeding programme is needed to introgress the CLCuD-resistance from other resistant sources to agronomically suitable Bt-cotton genotypes.

Objectives The aim of this study was to report an improvement on the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) after using Hyeongbangsabaeksan. Methods The patient was diagnosed with Soyangin Soyang-sangpung Symptomatology and treated with Hyeongbangsabaeksan. The patient's subjective symptoms of pain on the lower limb and discomfort in sleeping were observed using the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) respectively during the treatment period. And other specific symptoms of RLS were assessed once per week for a total of three times with Korean Versions of the International Restless Legs Scale. Results and Conclusions The pain on the patient's lower limb decreased from NRS 4 to NRS 0 after one week of treatment. And discomfort in sleeping decreased from VAS 5.5 to VAS 0 after one week of treatment. Furthermore, the score of Korean Versions of the International Restless Legs Scale decreased from 40 to 5 after two weeks of treatment. In conclusion, this study shows that Sasang Constitutional Medicine can be an effective treatment for Soyangin patient with Restless Legs Syndrome as Soyangin Soyang-sangpung Symptomatology.
The occurrence and chemical properties of grey tobacco leaves (Type III) found in 1995 crop of flue-cured tobacco cultivated in paddy field were investigated to compare with those of normal leaves. Cured leaves of NC82 were separated by visual characters into 3 classes of slight, fair and severe symptoms of grey leaf by the percentage of grey parts to whole leaf area. Number of samples classified with discoloring portion was the order of greyish brown > reddish brown > greyish yellow, respectively. Grey leaves of this type were mostly found among the leaves harvested from upper stalk position, and it was estimated that growth rate of upper leaves also influenced on the occurrence of grey leaves. Grey leaves showed remarkably lower b* and L* values than those of normal leaves, while a* value was mostly higher in grey leaves. These tendencies in chromatic aberration showed more remarkable difference in the degree of grey symptoms. Chemical analyses of grey leaf samples indicated that they contained less total nitrogen and nicotine, and more total sugar and starch than those of normal leaves. In chemical traits, these tendencies were accordance with the degree of grey symptoms, and within the same leaf, grey parts were decreased in total nitrogen and ether extract content compared with those of normal parts, but there was no difference in nicotine and Cl contents. Key words : grey leaf tobacco (type III), grey symptom, color, chemical properties.
Objectives : This study was to examine the effect of Intradermal Acupuncture therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji on the shoulder pain. The research was conducted with non equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Methods : IThe subjects were the women who was suffering for shoulder pain, who are employed at two hospitals in Busan, from April to June, 2006. The 24 women were experimental group who were applied to Intradermal Acupuncture Therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji, while the 20 women were control group who weren't applied to any treatments. The severity of shoulder pain and the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain were pre-measured. The Intradermal Acupuncture therapy was done a total of 4 times, 2 times a week over 2 weeks and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as an experimental treatment. As a post survey, the severity of shoulder pain, the frequency of shoulder pain and the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain were measured after one week and two weeks of experimental treatment. Research tools are Visual Analogue Scale by Cline et al. for measuring the severity of shoulder pain and the tool developed by Japan's industrial fatigue research committee of the industrial hygienics society and modified. Results : There was a significant difference(F=4.132, p=0.019) for the severity of shoulder pain on the interaction between time and group. There was a significant difference(F=11.193, p=0.000) for the extent of the subjective symptoms of shoulder pain on the interaction between time and. group. Conclusion : Based on the above results, it can be determined that Intradermal Acupuncture Therapy at Kyeonjeong, Cheonryo and Kokji can be used as the effective treatments for reducing of shoulder pam.
