  • A Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system employs visual features rather than manual annotation of images. The selection of optimal features used in classification of images plays a key role in its performance. Category proliferation problem has a huge impact on performance of systems using Fuzzy Artmap (FAM) classifier. The proposed CBIR system uses a modified version of FAM called Non-Proliferation Fuzzy Artmap (NPFAM). This is developed by introducing significant changes in the learning process and the modified algorithm is evaluated by extensive experiments. Results have proved that NPFAM classifier generates a more compact rule set and performs better than FAM classifier. Accordingly, the CBIR system with NPFAM classifier yields good retrieval.

  • This paper proposes a new image retrieval method called the 3D integrated multi-index to fuse SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) visual words with other features at the indexing level. The advantage of the 3D integrated multi-index is that it can produce finer subdivisions in the search space. Compared with the inverted indices of medium-sized codebook, the proposed method increases time slightly in preprocessing and querying. Particularly, the SIFT, contour and colour features are fused into the integrated multi-index, and the joint cooperation of complementary features significantly reduces the impact of false positive matches, so that effective image retrieval can be achieved. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets show that the 3D integrated multi-index significantly improves the retrieval accuracy. While compared with other methods, it requires an acceptable memory usage and query time. Importantly, we show that the 3D integrated multi-index is well complementary to many prior techniques, which make our method compared favorably with the state-of-the-arts.

  • Relevance judgment is important in terms of improving the effectiveness of information retrieval systems, and it has been dominant for users to search and use images utilizing internet and digital technologies. However, in the field of image retrieval, there have been only a few studies in terms of identifying relevance criteria. The purpose of this study aims to identify and characterize the non-relevance criteria from the failed image searches. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a total of 135 participants were recruited and a total of 1,452 criteria items were collected for this study. Analyses and identification on the data set found thirteen criteria such as 'topicality', 'visual content', 'accuracy', 'visual feature', 'completeness', 'appeal to user', 'focal point', 'bibliographic information', 'impression', 'posture', 'face feature', 'novelty', and 'time frame'. Among these criteria, 'visual content' and 'focal point' were introduced in this current study, while 'action' criterion identified in previous studies was not shown in this current study. When image needs and image uses are analyzed with these criteria, there are distinctive differences depending on different image needs and uses.

  • In this paper we present a content-based image retrieval algorithm using the visual feature vectors which describe the spatial characteristics of objects. The proposed technique uses the Gaussian mixture model(GMM) to represent multi-colored objects and the expectation maximization(EM) algorithm is employed to estimate the maximum likelihood(ML) parameters of the model. After image segmentation is performed based on GMM, the shape and color features are extracted from each object using Fourier descriptors and color histograms, respectively. Image retrieval consists of two steps: first, the shape-based query is carried out to find the candidate images whose objects have the similar shapes with the query image and second, the color-based query is followed. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in image retrieving by using the spatial and visual features of segmented objects.

  • We propose an efficient algorithm for an interactive content-based image retrieval using relevance feedback. In the proposed algorithm, a new query feature vector first is yielded from the average feature vector of the relevant images that is fed back from the result images of the previous retrieval. Each component weight of a feature vector is computed from an inverse of standard deviation for each component of the relevant images. The updated feature vector of the query and the component weights are used in the iterative retrieval process. In addition, the irrelevant images are excluded from object images in the next iteration to obtain additional performance improvement. In order to evaluate the retrieval performance of the proposed method, we experiment for three image databases, that is, Corel, Vistex, and Ultra databases. We have chosen wavelet moments, BDIP and BVLC, and MFS as features representing the visual content of an image. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields large precision improvement.

  • In this paper, we present a new texture image retrieval method which combines color and texture features extracted from images by a set of multi-resolution multi-direction (MRMD) filters. The MRMD filter set chosen is simple and can be separable to low and high frequency information, and provides efficient multi-resolution and multi-direction analysis. The color space used is HSV color space separable to hue, saturation, and value components, which are easily analyzed as showing characteristics similar to the human visual system. This experiment is conducted by comparing precision vs. recall of retrieval and feature vector dimensions. Images for experiments include Corel DB and VisTex DB; Corel_MR DB and VisTex_MR DB, which are transformed from the aforementioned two DBs to have multi-resolution images; and Corel_MD DB and VisTex_MD DB, transformed from the two DBs to have multi-direction images. According to the experimental results, the proposed method improves upon the existing methods in aspects of precision and recall of retrieval, and also reduces feature vector dimensions.

  • Indexing images using traditional indexing methods like taxonomy is not always efficient because of its visual content. This study examined how to apply folksonomies to image retrieval. To do this, first, we developed a category model for image tags found in Flickr. The model includes five categories and seventeen subcategories. Second, in order to evaluate the usefulness of the model to represent the various image tags as well as to investigate the end-user tagging behavior, three researchers classified the sampled image tags(141 most popular tags, 105 tags on three individual tag clouds and 3,848 image tags assigned on 156 images) according to the model. Finally, based on the research results, we proposed three methods for efficient image retrieval: extending folksonomies by combining them with ontologies; improving image retrieval efficiency using visual content and folksonomies; and updating taxonomy using folksonomies.

  • Bag of visual words(BoVW) is one of the image classification and retrieval methods, using feature point that automatical sorting and searching system by image feature vector of data base. The existing method using feature point shall search or classify the image that user unwanted. To solve this weakness, when comprise the words, include not only feature point but color information that express overall mood of image or texture information that express repeated pattern. It makes various searching possible. At the test, you could see the result compared between classified image using the words that have only feature point and another image that added color and texture information. New method leads to accuracy of 80~90%.

  • In this paper, we propose an image classification which combines semantic relations of tags with contents of images to improve the satisfaction of image retrieval on application domains as huge image sharing sites. To make good use of image retrieval or classification algorithms on huge image sharing sites as Flickr, they are applicable to real tagged Web images. To classify the Web images by 'bag of visual word' based image content, our algorithm includes training the category model by utilizing the preliminary retrieved images with semantically related tags as training data and classifying the test images based on PLSA. In the experimental results on the Flickr Web images, the proposed method produced the better precision and recall rates than those from the existing method using tag information.
