In the Japanese garden, a unique planting design has been used to improve visual harmony with the surrounding landscape by planting plants around the objects that are not harmonious with surrounding landscape. In this study, physiopsychological effects of plants caused by a traditional planting skill used in Japanese garden was verified in terms of visual relaxation using eye movement recording and semantic differential method. A total of fourteen Japanese volunteers(seven male and seven female) who have normal vision(aged $21{\sim}28$) participated as subjects. Experiment was carried out in the sealed room of Chiba University in Japan. Four different types of scenery models were presented which were created by combination of the three landscape factors of the surrounding background, the object that disturbs visual harmony, and the trees planted for improving visual harmony with the surrounding landscape. In the results, significantly more gaze fixations were measured on the trees than on the object and higher values in positive feelings were recorded for the stimuli with proper planting combination. Our results indicated that proper tree planting can cause physiopsychological relaxation by improving visual harmony with the surrounding landscape and provided new evidence for supporting scientific validity of the traditional planting skills.
The purpose of this study is to propose the basic guideline of the environmental sculptures to improve the quality level of the urban surroundings. The concept of the environmental sculptures was established and their roles in urban street scenary were investigated. And then, the relationships between the visual satisfaction and the elements which affect the visual harmony of Urban street scenary were analysed. The result of this study can be summarized as follows; The visual satisfaction was shown high at the sculptures itself with good shape and esthetic sense, and the harmony among the surroundings was estimated highly at the sculptures of good harmony with the floor surface, building and the elements surrounded it. And the highest satisfaction was shown at the scenary with the dean images and visual stability. The correlation of the degree of satisfaction with 5 variables which effect the satisfaction of urban streetscape shows that the harmony of shape is the most important variable for urban street scenary.

The purpose of this study was to discover the landscape visual image of the slope scene and their harmony with surrounding sceneries. This research utilized the basic study tool of psycho-physics and processed the case study of ten types of slope construction scene along the highway. The analysis was performed by the data obtained from the questionnaires and the photos for the slope construction scene. The questionnaires for analysis the image of the slope construction scene and their harmony with surrounding sceneries were designed using semantic differential scale and 5 point Likert-scale. The major findings were as follows. 1. At the part of the visual preferences analysis, the slope revegetation methods showed high level of preferences generally than on the slope structure methods. While the slope revegetation methods were estimated friendly, continuity, harmonious, soft, light and wide, the slope revegetation methods were estimated unstable, female, static, simple, omnipresent, appeared as policeman of weak inclination. Also the slope structure methods were estimated stable, manly, complicated, steep and healthy but rough, unharmonious, unfamiliar and heavy. 2. Psychological factors, related to the satisfaction for the slope revegetation methods were composed of three factors, aesthetic, individuality and physical character. And the slope structure methods were composed of five factors, aesthetic, individuality, stability, physical character, and complexity. 3. At the part of harmony with surrounding landscapes, the slope revegetation methods were evaluated highly but the slope structure methods received the lowest evaluation. Also the harmony analysis with surrounding view on the slope revegetation methods showed degree of high more than average in all texture, form, color and scale but the slope structure methods showed degree of fewer than average degree in form, scale, color and texture.

The purpose of this study is to find major factors which are influential in visual preferences of pergolas and shelters. 33 pergolas and shelters were selected for the study by slides test method. Major findings of this study are summarized as follows. 1. In the degree of visual preferences, pergolas and shelters which are traditional Korean ones in harmony with surrounding environment, and provide sculptural effects, unique images and shade, obtain relatively high scores. 2. The result of factor analysis showed that [dimensions] of visual preferences factors for pergolas and shelters were composition and use and place. 3. The result of regression analysis indicated that the best predictors of visual preferences for pergolas and shelters were atmosphere, aesthetics of form, harmony with surroundings, unique image etc.
The landscape of rural settlement incurred the loss and worsening of its main feature in the modernization which was progressed by the inner and outer cause - the growth of urbanization and improvement of living and dwelling environment. This study investigates the visual characteristic of land-use in rural and analyzes relations between visual quantities by land-use and a pre(essence of landscape. And it is suggested the basic data of a planning and a management in rural by making clear characteristics and influences of landscape preference elements The visual characteristic of landscape elements that is based on the rural land-use is classified harmony, variety, variables and particulate. And it is classified the object of landscape by recognizing images of landscape produce space, natural environment, settlement place and cultivated land of a special products. In the analysis of landscape preference, it appears that the harmony has a great influence on a suburban, a rural, a mountainous district, and a hamlet in psychology elements and the volume of forest area in visual elements. As a result, it requests rural scenes in harmony with the natural environment. So, the landscape planning which has the regional development and the identity as the rural settlement can be represented by the preservation and development of regional feature.
The purpose of present study was to examine how each clothes colors on the basis of 5YR 7/3 face color affect clothes colors images as follows : (1) what general consciousness of clothes colors in, (2) how the impression of the harmony of 5YR 7/3 face color and clothes colors is, (3) when we divide clothes colors according to the property of colors- chromatic color and achromatic color, cool color.neutral color.warm color, in tone, in color colume- if there is the difference of visual evaluation, (4) image analysis of 45 clothes colors with the view of each kind of adjectives. The result of this study is as the following: 1. As a result of the analysis of general consciousness on clothes colors, when subjects chose clothes, they most considered colors and they also considered their face colors. They would choose the color of clothes, which were becoming to their having clothes colors or their face colors when they bought clothes. 2. The impressions of coordination of 5YR 7/3 face color and clothes colors consisted of three dimensions - evaluation, activity and harmony. 3. It was known that as a result of the analysis of visual evalutional differences according to dividing the clothes colors by property of colors, there were such notable differences that they might effect the coordination images of face color and clothes colors differently. 4. After arranging 45 clothes colors on the graphs in 17 adjectives, gethering them thogether in each dimension and as the result of the analysis in the evaluation dimension, estimation of yellow, light green column were low and that of achromatic colors were high. That is, it was known that the evalution dimension was concerned with hue of the color properties. In activity dimension, there were different image according to each adjectives. The main objective of this research was to understand the characteristics of separation color coordination of contemporary female fashion through the analysis of 'pre-a-porter Collections' of four collections (i. e. cities) - Paris, Milan, New York, London - from the periods of 2004 S/S to 2008/9 A/W. The data collection of 265 was done by reviewing 'pre-a-porter Collections' magazine and total 265 observations were made. Statistical analysis of frequency and also qualitative interpretation of separation color coordination characteristics were completed. The main findings were; (1) In separation color coordination of contemporary women's fashion collections, there were three main types of color scheme which were classified into seven detailed categories of color combination. First was the achromatic color & one chromatic separation color scheme which was classified into four categories of - black & white, black & grey, white & grey, and grey & grey - color combination. Second was the chromatic colors & one achromatic separation color scheme which classified into two categories of achromatic & chromatic color & one achromatic separation color combination, and chromatic colors & one achromatic separation color combination. Third was chromatic colors and one chromatic separation color combination. (2) The achromatic colors and one chromatic separation color scheme showed two phases of reinforcing the strong and modern image, or softening the hard and dull image of achromatic color combination. In color schemes which used more than two chromatic colors, the separation color frequently converted the tedious and monotonous fashion image, which caused by identical or similarity in color or tone harmony, into more attractive and interesting. (3) In conclusion, through the various use and coordination of various color schemes, color harmony and separation colors, the separation color coordination in contemporary female fashion has been suggested the effective way of color combination which can lead the visual pleasure and the vitality along with the unity and the harmony. This characteristics can create various images and visual diversity for fashion. The types and the use of color scheme and separation color showed different trends in four collections.

This study aims to analyze visual structure by evaluating the view from five building sites around An-ap pond, and attempt to determine which site commands the best view and will provide the most active use. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: According to the questionnaire survey of experts on the relations of dominancy-subordination(´chu-jong´), vacancy-solidness(´heo-sil´), sparsity-density(´so-mil´) based on ancient oriental Yin-Yang theory and analysis of visual structure on angle of elevation, depression, and the landscape-component ratio to be seen through five building sites around the west of An-ap pond, building site three was selected as the building site which has the best landscape. Therefore, it is estimated that building site three played the role of core-building site. According to the result of correlation analysis, the greater the increased in the component ratio of sky, mountain ,the greater the degree of harmony within the landscape. As well, the degree of harmony increased when the landscape component ratio of a distant view was greater than that of a near view. Moreover, it was proved that the relationships of ´chu-jong´, ´heo-sil´, ´so-mil´ are correlative, not independent.
As important elements consisting of city streetscape, facade design on building is generally very significant. But without active acceptance and understanding of the concept that the building has a private objective as personal property, it is not easy to take an involvement into design as well as to establish reasonable and scientific standards of harmony. Therefore, for desirable streetscape planning, it is indispensable to know how to closely examine the visual harmony of already established buildings in each street and how to get the solutions for its realization. In this respect, this study is to try to examine and verify the feasibility of our present streetscape situation by experimental application of acceptable Y. Elesheshtawy's model(1997), an interpretation of quantitative index of street buildings by Gestalt theory, for the preparation of the foundation of institute and standards of building design which has social value in contributing to visual and spacious harmony in our street space without giving any damage to private property. From the result, I can assure the validity that the physical complexity, whose schema is socially and culturally different from our reality, is applicable to our actual streetscape in some extent.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate visual preferences of the methods for river embankment based on seasonal changes and to reveal the relationship between visual preference and effective factors, which are the physical and esthetic elements inside the river. For this research seven river embankment methods including concrete block, concrete wall, gabion, and vegetated concrete block were selected in Dongchon of Gwangyang. Twenty-eight pictures by the four pictures of each embankment method based on seasonal changes, the winter and summer of the first and second years after construction were used for a photo-questionnaire by 49 participants. In the analysis of the relationship between visual preference and effective factors, the independent variables included eight factors: form of the material, harmony with the surroundings, the cleanness of river floor, the green area of embankment methods, the water area in river floor, the stone and sand area in river floor, the planting area in river floor, and the area of embankment itself. The result of this study are as follows. First, visual preference in summer was higher than in winter, and the summer landscape of the second you scored the highest value for visual preference. Second, similarly to the way the vegetated concrete block produced a green effect, cobblestone and gabion embankments made of natural materials scored higher than others, whereas the concrete retaining wall scored the lowest of all methods because of it's artificiality. Third, the seven independent variables, except form of the material, are proved statistically significant at the 5% level. The water area in river floor, harmony with the surroundings, the planting area in river floor, and the cleanness of the river floor were revealed as more effective factors influencing visual preference. The research results suggest that the riverscape has to be controlled in terms of seasonal change and embankment methods. Natural materials and green effects in embankment methods are more important for increasing landscape preference, and the landscape factors inside a river should also be considered important variables. It is recommended that advanced study on other factors affecting visual preference of the riverscape be carried out to support this research.
