Remote NDT for Inspection of Reactor Vessel Components of fast Breeder Test Reactor

  • Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) is a 40MW (thermal) / 13.2MW (electrical), Plutonium - Uranium mixed carbide fuelled, sodium cooled, loop type nuclear reactor operating at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam. Its main aim is to generate experience in operation of fast reactors and sodium systems and to serve as an irradiation facility for development of fuels and structural materials fur fast reactors. Nuclear reactors pose difficulties to the NDT techniques used to monitor the conditions of the internal components. Sodium cooled fast breeder reactors have their own typical difficulties in using the NDT techniques. These are due to the need for operation in aggressive environment of nuclear radiation and sodium (molten/vapour), as well as the need to maintain leak tightness of a very high order during all states of reactor operation and shutdown for fuel handling, maintenance and remote inspection. This paper discusses the following NDT techniques, which have been successfully used for the past 15 years in FBTR: (i) Periscope and Projector, (ii) Core Co-ordinate Measuring Device and, (iii) Optical fiberscope. The inspection using these techniques have given confidence for further reactor operation at high power by giving useful data on the conditions of the components inside the reactor vessel.

  • In this study, we propose a low voltage stress and cost-effective light emitting diode (LED) driver capable of multi-channel current balancing. Conventional LED drivers require as many boost converters as the number of LED channels, whereas the proposed LED driver requires only one buck converter and several balancing capacitors instead of several expensive boost converters. Additionally, while the components of the boost converter have high voltage stress and depend on the LED driving voltage, components of the proposed driver have about one-half of the voltage stress across all components. The proposed driver exhibits high reliability and cost effectiveness because it only uses few DC blocking capacitors with no additional active devices to balance the current of multi-channel LEDs. The proposed driver exhibits high reliability and cost effectiveness. The validity of the proposed driver is confirmed through a theoretical analysis. An explanation of the design considerations and experimental results were obtained using a prototype applicable to a 46" LED-TV.

  • 본 연구에서는 웹 스타일 가이드를 구축하고 있는 해외 5개 대학 도서관 웹사이트의 스타일 가이드를 분석한 후 국내 10개 지역거점대학 도서관의 웹사이트의 구성요소를 추출하여. 공통항목을 도출하였다. 그리고 도서관 웹사이트에 있어서의 사용성(usability)과 접근성(accessibility)에 관한 연구결과들을 적용하여 대학도서관 웹사이트의 전반적인 디자인 흐름에 대한 통일성과 규칙성을 발견하였고 이를 바탕으로 웹사이트에 일관된 시각적 아이덴티티(identity)를 부여하기 위한 요소인 대학도서관 웹 스타일 가이드 요소들을 제시하였다.

쿼드트리 분할 기술을 이용한 컬러 영상 암호화 기술 (Color Image Encryption Technique Using Quad-tree Decomposition Method)

  • 최근 다양한 형태의 영상 콘텐츠가 제작되고 있고, 이를 위한 저작권 보호기술에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 컬러 영상을 위한 영상암호화 기술을 제안한다. 이 기술은 영상을 RGB 색차성분으로 분할한 후, 윤곽선을 기준으로 쿼드트리 분할을 수행한다. 쿼드트리 분할 후, 선정된 블록들을 대상으로 암호화를 수행한다. 색차성분을 대상으로 암호화를 수행하여 암호화 효율을 측정하고, 컬러 영상으로 재구성한 후에도 암호화 효율을 측정한다. 암호화 효율은 시각적인 측정방식과 객관적인 화질평가 방식을 이용한다. 실험결과 PSNR 수치는 색차성분의 경우 7~10[dB], 컬러 영상의 경우 16~19[dB]로 측정되었다. 본 논문에서 제안한 영상암호화 기술은 향후 다양한 디지털 영상 콘텐츠의 저작권 보호에 사용될 것으로 보인다.

Manufacture of High Quality Musical Steel Drums in Trinidad and Tobago

  • This paper explores innovative manufacturing processes, which can be used to manufacture the national musical instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the Musical Steel Drum or Steel Pan. The main manufacturing process used today is the manual hand-forming technique. In order to achieve more consistent and deeper formed components while maintaining the high quality of the instrument, it is proposed that the Marforming process and the Flow-forming process, an adaptation of the Spinforming process, be used more frequently in the future to replace the traditional Hand-forming method. In the traditional Spinforming technique material is pushed from the outer circumference of the metal disc to the center in progressive passes of the former. This results in a thinning of the outer region of the formed component with thickening of the center, however the opposite is required for the musical steel drum and by adapting the process the required strain distributions were achieved. Evaluation took the form of strain analyses of pre-formed steel drums and visual inspection of the quality of the surface finish. It was found that the Marformed components had the smallest range of strain values while the Spinformed components had the largest range.

A New Approach for Information Security using an Improved Steganography Technique

  • This research paper proposes a secured, robust approach of information security using steganography. It presents two component based LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography methods for embedding secret data in the least significant bits of blue components and partial green components of random pixel locations in the edges of images. An adaptive LSB based steganography is proposed for embedding data based on the data available in MSB's (Most Significant Bits) of red, green, and blue components of randomly selected pixels across smooth areas. A hybrid feature detection filter is also proposed that performs better to predict edge areas even in noisy conditions. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and random pixel embedding is incorporated to provide two-tier security. The experimental results of the proposed approach are better in terms of PSNR and capacity. The comparison analysis of output results with other existing techniques is giving the proposed approach an edge over others. It has been thoroughly tested for various steganalysis attacks like visual analysis, histogram analysis, chi-square, and RS analysis and could sustain all these attacks very well.

  • In recent years, discoloration defects, called as snail trail, have been observed at many crystalline photovoltaic modules after a period of time ranging from several months to several years after initial installation. It has been reported that this phenomenon doesn't impact on the performance of photovoltaic modules, but it can be detected through simple visual inspection. The origin and detailed mechanism for the formation have not been identified. In this study, non-destructive analysis by Raman spectroscopy has been carried out to investigate the origin of this phenomenon. In parallel, destructive analysis by scanning electron microscopt and transmission electron microscopy was also performed in order to confirm the results from non-destructive method. Through the extensive analysis, it was found that the main cause for discoloration is the formations of $Ag_2CO_3$ and $AgC_2H_3O_2$. Detailed mechanism for the formation of these particles was indentified through systematic studies.

  • A concession business at Incheon Int'l airport has achieved a huge success since its grand opening of 2001. However the duty-free market became matured due to downtown duty free stores and on-line stores. Thus this paper tried to research and suggest strategic planning of VMD at Incheon airport's duty-free after analyzing the relationship among the components of duty-free store's VMD, brand awareness, brand image and customer's loyalty. Components of VMD are constructed in harmony, attractiveness, trendiness and Trust, which are independent variables. In addition, brand awareness and brand image are chosen as control variables. Customer loyalty is also designated as a dependant variable. Focusing those variables, this paper tried to find out the effect of VMD components to brand and consumer loyalty. According to the research result, it is proven attractiveness and harmony have a significant positive impact on brand awareness and brand image. It is also found out brand awareness and image have a positive impact on passenger's loyalty on duty-free stores at Incheon airport.

시지각적 요소를 갖춘 건축물 위험징후 측정 모니터링 시스템 설치 가이드라인 개발연구 (Developing the Installation Guideline of Building Monitoring Systems for Hazardous Symptom Measurements with Visual Perception)

  • 연구목적: 최근 노후한 안전관리 미비 시설물의 구조적 결함으로 인한 건축물 및 시설물 붕괴사고 등이 발생하고 있다. 본 연구는 전시 공간 건축물의 위험징후를 분석하고 계측기술을 개발하기 위해 시지각적 요소를 갖춘 건축물 센서 모니터링을 위한 최적의 센서 위치를 결정하는 상시 모니터링 시스템 설치가이드라인을 개발하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구방법: 위험징후 계측 기기의 구성요소, 설치위치, 기기의 경보 기준, 관리 방안 등을 제시한다. 연구결과: 센서의 위치를 결정하고, 통일된 시지각을 갖춤으로서 분석을 위한 신호처리 기술을 확보하고, Test-bed 운영 통해서 센서 모니터링 기반의 최적 '위험징후 감지장치'를 구성하는 방안을 제시하였다. 결론: 본 연구의 결과는 전시 공간 건축물 붕괴로 발생할 수 있는 재난으로부터 대비하고, 안전관리 역량을 강화에 기여할 수 있다.

도시 초·중·고교 학생 시력저하 및 굴절이상에 관한 보건조사 (A Survey of the Visual Impairment and the Refractive Errors in Urban School Children in Korea)

  • The analysis of the visual impairment and refractive errors among 4,004 school children in Seoul in 1986 with ancilliary questionnaire on various socio-environmental and visual factors was conducted. The number of the student with subnormal vision (0.7 or less) was 1,552 (38,8 %), and the rate of subnormal vision was increased with the higher grading of the school classes. Rate of myopes among the 1,552 students vision 0.7 or less consists of 52 % in primary school, 83.5 % in middle school, and 94 % in high school, and they were increased with the higher grading of the school class. The acutest increase of rates were observed at the stages of 2nd year class of male, and 1st year class of female at the middle school. Among the glasses-wearer of myopic students of vision 0.5 or less, the rate of adequately corrected cases was 42.5 %, whereas the overcorrected in 6.8 %, and undercorrected in 49.3 %. The main reasons of glasses negligence among the non-possessor of glasses with the vision of 0.5 or less were indicated in prominence of numbers of' "no complaints without glasses" (42 %). "unawareness of visual disturbance" (20%), "annoyance with wearing glasses" (13.4%), and "no permission from parents" (11.5 %) rather than the "economical reasons". The amblyopic components were estimated 126 cases (3.2%) in combination of refractive errors. According to the analysis of ancilliary questionnaire, the-conclusion with the statistical significance was that the myopization of the children's eyes appeared susceptible with a number of socio-environmental factors including the eating habits, length of T.V. watching period and distance, reading distance and type of illumination during near work, and school achievement. The possibility of prevention in some extents of progress of the myopia following the improvement of the relevant environmental factors in younger stage of children would be considered as deducible one.
