  • Defect of apple was depreciated the product value and causes storage disease seriously. To detect the defect of ‘Fuji’apple with machine vision system, the optical characteristics of defect should be investigated. In this research, absorbance spectra of defect were acquired by spectrophotometer in the range of visible and NIR region(400∼1,100nm) and L*a*b* color values were also acquired by colorimeter. NIR machine vision system was constructed with B&W camera, frame grabber, 16 tungsten-halogen lamps, variable focal length lens and NIR bandpass filter which was mounted to lens outward. Average gray values of defect at 15 NIR wavelength were acquired and the significant NIR wavelength was selected by comparing Mahalanobis distance between sound and defective apple. As the result of Mahalanobis distance analysis, the significant wavelength to discriminate the defectives in ‘Fuji’apple were found to be 720nm for scab and 970nm for bruise and cuts and 920nm was also effective regardless of defective types.

  • The production of oxygen and hydrogen from solar water splitting has been considered to be an ultimate solution for energy and environmental issues, and over the past few years, nano-sized semiconducting metal oxides alone and with graphene have been shown to have great promise for use in photocatalytic water splitting. It is challenging to find ideal materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting, and these have limited commercial applicability due to critical factors, including their physico-chemical properties, the rate of charge-carrier recombination and limited light absorption. This review article discusses these main features, and recent research progress and major factors affect the performance of the water splitting reaction. The mechanism behind these interactions in transition metal oxides and graphene based nano-structured semiconductors upon illumination has been discussed in detail, and such characteristics are relevant to the design of materials with a superior photocatalytic response towards UV and visible light.

  • Various tissue and follicular components were analyzed for the determination of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) isozyme patterns by electrophoretic technique with chromogen reaction in the pig. Optimum conditions for the tissue homogenate and the storage were finally established. Small quantities of follicular components were analysed for typing of LDH isozymes by microelectrophoresis. Microelectrophoretic analysis showed that only LDH-1 was visible in the oocytes, all isozymes in cumulus masses, and LDH-1, 2 and 3 in follicular fluid. The results provide critical information on the LDH activity of various tissues and follicular components. Furthermore, t he developed methods should be useful the analysis of LDH in the small quantity of samples, especially in the oocyte, and easily applicable to the oocyte and early embryos of other domestic species.

  • Intracavity second harmonic generation of diode pumped solid state lasers in the visible and ultraviolet regions provide efficient, compact and robust light sources for various applications, such as optical data storage, material processing, spectroscopy and bioanalysis. Advantages of neodymium vanadate (Nd:$YVO_4$) as a gain medium for intracavity-doubled lasers over Nd:YAG lie in the facts that the gain spectrum consists of a single line with short absorption depth, and that the stimulated emission cross sections are larger. • Diode laser absorption sensors are advantageous because they may provide fast, sensitive, absolute, and selective measurements of species concentration. These systems are very attractive for practical applications owing to its compactness, reasonable cost, robustness, and ease of use. In addition, diode lasers we fiber-optic compatible and thus enable simultaneous measurements of multiple species along a line-of-sight. Recent advances of room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications make it possible to be applied for combustion diagnostics based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Therefore, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor systems are now appearing for variety of applications. The objectives of this research are to develop new gas sensing system and to verify feasibility of this system. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy has been demonstrated in these experiments and has a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • The world at the end of the $20^{th}$ Century has become "blue" Indeed, this past decade has witnessed a "blue rush" towards the development of violet-blue-green light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) based on wide bandgap III-Nitride semiconductors. And the hard work has culminated with, first, the demonstration of commercial high brightness blue and green LEDs and of commercial violet LDs, at the very end of this decade. Thanks to their extraordinary properties, these semiconductor materials have generated a plethora of activity in semiconductor science and technology. Novel approaches are explored daily to improve the current optoelectronics state-of-the-art. Such improvements will extend the usage and the efficiency of new light sources (e.g. white LEDs), support the rising information technology age (e.g. high density optical data storage), and enhance the environmental awareness capabilities of humans (ultraviolet and visible photon detectors and sensors). Such opportunities and many others will be reviewed in this presentation.

  • Organic disulfide compounds are having higher theoretical capacity than the conventional cathode material and are considered as the important storage material. Here, we are reporting the preparation of poly (2,2'-dithiodianiline) PDDA/multiwall carbon nanotubes, (MWCNTs) composites under different experimental conditions. Amine functionalized and unfunctionalized MWCNTs were independently used for the preparation of composites. Composites were prepared in the presence of cetyl trimethyl bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, and also in the absence of CTAB. A physical mixture of PDTDA and MWCNTs was formed with unfunctionalized MWCNTs. Grafting of PDDA onto MWCNTs was performed by chemical oxidative polymerization of 2, 2'-dithiodianiline in the presence of amine functionalized MWCNTs. The composites of MWCNTs and PDTDA were characterized for structure, morphology and thermal properties through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. The composite materials prepared by this method are expected to find applications as electrode materials for lithium batteries.

  • Natural photosynthesis utilizes solar energy to convert carbon dioxide and water to energy-rich carbohydrates. Substantial use of sunlight to meet world energy demands requires energy storage in useful fuels via chemical bonds because sunlight is intermittent. Artificial photosynthesis research focuses the fundamental natural process to design solar energy conversion systems. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide ($NAD^+$) and $NADP^+$ are ubiquitous as electron transporters in biological systems. Enzymatic, chemical, and electrochemical methods have been reported for NADH regeneration. As photochemical systems, visible light-driven catalytic activity of NADH regeneration was carried out using platinum nanoparticles, molecular rhodium and cobalt complexes in the presence of triethanolamine as a sacrificial electron donor. Pt nanoparticles showed photochemical NADH regeneration activity without additional visible light collector molecules, demonstrating that both photoactivating and catalytic activities exist together in Pt nanoparticles. The NADH regeneration of the Pt nanoparticle system was not interfered with the reduction of $O_2$. Molecular cobalt complexes containing dimethylglyoxime ligands also transfer their hydrides to $NAD^+$ with photoactivation of eosin Y in the presence of TEOA. In this photocatalytic reaction, the $NAD^+$ reduction process competed with a proton reduction.

  • This study examined changes in the characteristics of Aralia Kimchi made using different CaCl$_2$ treatments and seasonings by documenting changes occurring in the course of preparation and preservation. The result exhibited no visible changes in the degree of pH, acidity or salinity in the various Kimchi sample. The total number of bacterium and lactobacillus increased gradually in the early stage of preservation and then showed an accelerated growth until the 42$^{nd}$ day, after which a plateau was maintained to the 56$^{th}$ day followed by a downturn trend to the 70$^{th}$ day. No visible change in color was observed during the preservation period while the sample treated with CaCl$_2$ exhibited a higher degree of hardness than its untreated counterpart, although no distinctive difference was noted in the sensory test.

  • This paper presents a 'consequence analysis' for vapor cloud explosions caused by heavy gas leakages from commercially used storage tanks at petrochemical plants. Particularly, this paper emphasizes on evaluating the results of various vapor cloud explosion accidents from Butane storage tanks. Also this paper analyses the impact of variables on the accidents in order to acquire the optimum conditions for variables. $SuperChems^{TM}$ Professional Edition was applied to analyse the impact (If atmospheric and other variables in the situation where vapor cloud continuously disperses from the ground level. Under the assumption that practical operating conditions are selected as a standard condition, and Butane leaks from the storage tank for 15 minutes, the results show that the maximum distance of LFL (Lower Flammable Limit) was 52 meters and overpressure by the vapor cloud explosion was 1 psi at 128.2 meters. It is observed that the impact of the variables on accidental Butane storage tank leakage mainly varied upon atmospheric stability, wind velocity, pipe line size, visible length, etc., and changes in the simulation result occurred as the variables varied. The maximum distance of the LFL (Lower Flammable Limit) increased as the visible length became shorter, the size of the leak became larger, the wind velocity was decreased, and the climatic conditions became more stable. Thus, by analysing the variables that influence the simulation results of explosions of Butane storage tanks containing heavy gases, I am presenting the most appropriate method for 'consequence analysis' and the selection of standards for suitable values of variables, to obtain the most optimal conditions for the best results.
