We uniformly coated Eu(III)- and Tb(III)-doped yttrium oxide onto the surface of $SiO_2$ spheres and then characterized them by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction crystallography and UV-Visible absorption. 2D and 3D photoluminescence image map profiles were reported for the core-shell type structure. Red emission peaks of Eu(III) were observed between 580 to 730 nm and assigned to $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J = 0 - 4) transitions. The green emission peaks of Tb(III) between 450 and 650 nm were attributed to the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions. For annealed samples, Eu(III) ions were embedded at a $C_2$ symmetry site in $Y_2O_3$, which was accompanied by an increase in luminescence intensity and redness, while Tb(III) was changed to Tb(IV), which resulted in no green emission.
The early detection of breast cancer is clearly a key ingredient for reducing breast cancer mortality. Microcalcification is the only visible feature of the DCIS's(ductal carcinoma in situ) which consist 15 ~ 20% of screening-detected breast cancer. Therefore, the analysis of the shapes and distributions of microcalcifications is very significant for the early detection. The automatic detection procedures have b(:on the concern of digital image processing for many years. We proposed here one efficient method which is essentially statistical pattern classification accelerated by one representative feature, correlation coefficient. We compared the results by this additional feature with results by a simple gray level thresholding. The average detection rate was increased from 48% by gray level feature only to 83% by the proposed method The performances were evaluated with TP rates and FP counts, and also with Bayes errors.
Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) is the first ocean color instrument that will be operating in a geostationary orbit from 2010. GOCI will provide the crucial information of ocean environment around the Korean peninsula in high spatial and temporal resolutions at eight visible bands. We report an on-going development of imaging and radiometric performance prediction model for GOCI with realistic data for reflectance, transmittance, absorption, wave-front error and scattering properties for its optical elements. For performance simulation, Monte Carlo based ray tracing technique was used along the optical path starting from the Sun to the final detector plane for a fixed solar zenith angle. This was then followed by simulation of red-tide evolution detection and their radiance estimation, following the in-orbit operational sequence. The simulation results proves the GOCI flight model is capable of detecting both image and radiance originated from the key ocean phenomena including red tide. The model details and computational process are discussed with implications to other earth observation instruments.

For application of transparent bulletproof materials, the SLS(soda-lime-silicate) glass was heated by 2-step crystallization. The DTA curve for SLS glass revealed the nucleation and crystal growth temperature at about $575^{\circ}C$ and $675^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystallized glass was heated at various conditions(temperature, time). As a result, the maximum nucleation and crystal growth rates were $3.8\times10^5/mm^3{\cdot}hr$ at $575^{\circ}C$ and 20.58nm/min at $680^{\circ}C$, respectively. The bending strength, fracture toughness and vickers hardness were 451.7MPa, $0.9388MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, and $693.9H_v$ which were 201%, 31%, and 22% higher than parent glass, respectively. Surface image and transmittance of crystallized SLS glass were analyzed by optical microscopy and UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer. Transmittance of crystallized SLS glass at visible-range(200~800nm) was not changed.
A pulse is generated when the heart pumps blood into the arterial system. The heart pumps blood only when it contracts, not when it relaxes; therefore, blood enters the arterial system in a cyclical form. Artery beating is visible in some parts of the body surface, such as the radial artery of the wrist. This paper mainly uses the feature in which near-infrared spectroscopy penetrates skin to construct a non-invasive measurement system that can measure small vibration in the subcutaneous tissue of the human body, and then uses it for the pulse measurement. This measurement system uses the optical moir$\acute{e}$ principle, together with the fringe displacement made by small vibration in the subcutaneous tissue, and an image analysis program to calculate the height variation from small vibrations in the subcutaneous tissue. It completes a measurement system that records height variation with time, and that together with a fast Fourier transform (FFT) program, they can convert the pulse waveform generated by vibration (time-amplitude) to heartbeat frequency (frequency-amplitude). This is a new and non-invasive medical assistance system for measuring the pulse of the human body, with the advantages of being simple, fast, safe and objective.

Sentinel-2A satellite imagery provides VNIR (Visible Near InfraRed) and SWIR (ShortWave InfraRed) wavelength bands, and it is known to be effective for land cover classification, cloud detection, and environmental monitoring. Greenhouse is one of the middle classification classes for land cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea. Since greenhouse is a class that has a lot of changes due to natural disasters such as storm and flood damage, there is a limit to updating the greenhouse at a rapid cycle in the land cover map. In the present study, we utilized Sentinel-2A satellite images that provide both VNIR and SWIR bands for the detection of greenhouse. To utilize Sentinel-2A satellite images for the detection of greenhouse, we produced high-resolution SWIR bands applying to the fusion technique performed in two stages and carried out the detection of greenhouse using SVM (Support Vector Machine) supervised classification technique. In order to analyze the applicability of SWIR bands to greenhouse detection, comparative evaluation was performed using the detection results applying only VNIR bands. As a results of quantitative and qualitative evaluation, the result of detection by additionally applying SWIR bands was found to be superior to the result of applying only VNIR bands.
Conventional methods for measuring winds provide wind velocity observations over limited area and time period. The use of satellite imagery for measuring wind velocity overcomes some of these limitations by providing wide area and near condinuous coverage. And its accurate depiction is essential for operational weather forecasting and for initialization of NWP models. GMS-5 provides full disk images at hourly intervals. At four times each day - 0500, 1100, 1700, 2300 hours UTC-a series of three images is received, separated by thirty minutes, centered at the four times. The current wind system generates winds from sets of 3 infrared(IR) images, separated by an hour, four times a day. It also produces visible(VIS) and water vapor(WV) image-based winds from half-hourly imagery four times a day. The derivation of wind from satellite imagery involves the identification of suitable cloud targets. tracking the targets on sequential images, associating a pressure height with the derived wind vector, and quality control. The aim of this research is to incorporate imagery from other available spectral channels and examine the error characteristics of winds derived from these images.
In this paper, we propose a novel blocking effect reduction method based on a rational B-spline. The blocking effect results from independent coding of each image block and becomes highly visible especially coded at very low bit rates. The proposed approach adopts a rational open uniform B-spline curve that used to produce a smooth curve through a set of control points. The pixels on the block boundary are treated as control points, and the weight values, which decide the shape of curve, are determined differentially by considering the distance the position of the pixels and that of the block boundary. The simulation results show that the proposed method has excellent performance for all pattern of the blocking effect with less computational complexity.
Satellite imagery may contain large regions covered with atmospheric aerosol. A highresolution satellite imagery affected by non-homogenous aerosol cover should be processed for land cover study and perform the radiometric calibration that will allow its future application for Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) data. In this study, aerosol signal was separated from high resolution satellite data based on the reflectance separation method. Since aerosol removal has a good sensitivity over bright surface such as man-made targets, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm could be used. AOT retrieval using Look-up table (LUT) approach for utilizing the transformed image to radiometrically compensate visible band imagery is processed and tested in the correction of satellite scenery. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), EO-l/HYPERION data have been used for aerosol correction and AOT retrieval with different spatial resolution. Results show that an application of the aerosol detection for HYPERION data yields successive aerosol separation from imagery and AOT maps are consistent with MODIS AOT map.
Extraction of waterline in tidal flat has been one of the main concerns in the remote sensing of coastal region. This study aimed to define the spectral characteristics of turbid water near the shoreline and to find the appropriate spectrum to delineate the waterline at the inter-tidal flat in the western coast of Korean Peninsula. Spectral reflectance curves were obtained by the field measurements under the diverse condition of water depth and turbidity at the study area in Kyong-gi Bay. Spectroscopy measurements showed that reflectances of the exposed mudflat, shallow turbid water, and normal coastal water were significantly different by wavelength. Shallow water near the waterline showed diverse conditions of turbidity. Spectral reflectance tends to increase as turbidity increases, particularly at the visible and near infrared spectrum. At the middle infrared wavelength, tidal water showed very little reflectance regardless of the turbidity and water depth and was easily disting from the exposed tidal flat. The exact waterline between exposed tidal flat and seawater should be extracted from the image data obtained at the middle infrared wavelength.
