  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. A computational efficiency is verified by the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

  • The flow fields in the volute casing of a small-size turbo-compressor at different flowrate (design point ${\pm}20%$) are studied by numerical analysis. The governing equations for three-dimensional steady viscous flow are solved using SIMPLE algorithm with commercial code of STAR-CD. Numerical results show that the three-dimensional flow pattern inside the volute casing of a small-size turbo-compressor is strongly influenced by secondary flows that are typically created by the curvature or the casing passages. The flow pattern in the casing also affects the performance of the turbo-compressor. In order to elucidate the loss mechanism through the volute, we prepared the secondary flow, velocity magnitude, and static pressure distribution at the four cross-sectional planes of the casing.

  • The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by the interaction of a pair of vortices are studied numerically. To analyze the common flow up produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow, the pseudo-compressibility viscous method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flows. To predict turbulence characteristics, a two-layer $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used on the flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary The computational results predict accurately Reynolds stress, turbulent kinetic energy and flow field generated by the vortex generators. The numerical results, such as thermal boundary layers, skin friction characteristics and heat transfers, are also reasonably close to the experimental data.

  • Panel methods are essential tools for analyzing a fluid-flow problem around complex three dimensional bodies, but they lack ability to solve viscous effects. On the other hand, CFD methods are considered as powerful tools for analyzing fluid-flow characteristics including viscosity. However, they also have short falls, requiring more computing time and showing different results depending on the selection of turbulence models and grid systems. In this paper a hybrid scheme combining a panel method and a CFD method is suggested. The scheme adopts a panel method for far-field solution where viscous effects are negligible and a CFD method for the solution of RANS equations in near-field where viscous effects are relatively strong. The intermediate region between the far-field and near-field is introduced where the calculated field point velocities by the panel method are given as boundary velocities for the CFD method. To verify the scheme, calculated results, by a panel method, a CFD method and the hybrid scheme, for a two dimensional foil section are compared. The suggested hybrid scheme gives reasonable results, while computation time and memory can be dramatically reduced. By using the hybrid scheme efforts can be concentrated for the local flow near the leading and trailing edges, by providing more dense grid system, where detailed flow characteristics are required.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to stable simulation the directional ice shape by coupling of freezing solver and viscous water flow. The proposed ice modeling framework considers viscous fluid flow in the direction of ice growth, which is important in freezing simulation. The water simulation solution uses the method of applying a new viscous technique to the IISPH(Implicit incompressible SPH) simulation, and the ice direction and the glaze effect use the proposed anisotropic freezing solution. The condition in which water particles change state to ice particles is calculated as a function of humidity and new energy with water flow. Humidity approximates a virtual water film on the surface of the object, and fluid flow is incorporated into our anisotropic freezing solution to guide the growth direction of ice. As a result, the results of the glaze and directional freezing simulations are shown stably according to the flow direction of viscous water.

  • Flow analysis of automobile front-end cooling fan are numerically investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are solved in the flow domain. The Reynolds stresses are modelled using the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Flow and pressure characteristics around the fan are investigated. The pressure sharply increases through the fan. Pressure variations on the pressure and suction sides of the fan are well represented in the calculations. The flow streamlines in the blade passage are nearly parallel to the blade.

  • A nodeless variables finite element method for analysis of two-dimensional, steady-state viscous incompressible flow is presented. The finite element equations are derived from the governing Navier-Stokes differential equations and a corresponding computer program is developed. The proposed method is evaluated by solving the examples of the lubricant flow in journal bearing and the flow in the lid-driven cavity. An adaptive meshing technique is incorporated to improve the solution accuracy and, at the same time, to reduce the analysis computational time. The efficiency of the combined adaptive meshing technique and the nodeless variables finite element method is illustrated by using the example of the flow past two fences in a channel.

  • The flows through a turbomachinery tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. A good analysis of the flows associated with rotor/stator interactions in turbomachinery will be great help in design stage. In this investigation, unsteady viscous flow structurts through one and half stage of UTRC large scale rotating axial turbine are analysed. The numerical data was compared with experimental data and showed good agreement.

  • The mechanical properties were measured for magnesium phosphate glasses containing small amounts of water. The decrease in hardness with increasing water content was resulted from a looser chain structure caused by water. The fracture of these glasses was changed from brittle fracture to plastic deformation as a results of the increased viscous flow with increasing water contents. The extent of any viscous flow or deformation initiating from the crack tips in these glasses could be considered as quite small.
