  • Virtual reality is one of the key emerging technologies of the 21th century and it has been used in a variety of ways in the fields of architectural research. Virtual reality is presented as an ideal alternative for studying the interaction between space and humans because it provides a realistic spacial experience while allowing experimenters to control environmental variables at a low cost easily. It allowed us to deepen our knowledge of human spatial experience in the built environment. However, existing reviews do not include the following points: 1) previous review research has been focused on using virtual reality technology in construction and engineering, not spatial experience, 2) recently, some review researches started to study the interaction between space and humans in the built environment, however, they do not suggest specific concepts of spatial experience. The present review aims to examine the existing literature about measuring spatial experience using virtual reality in architectural design. The study conducted a systematic qualitative review that analyzes and synthesizes the evolving literature regarding design elements, methodology, and usability. The study concludes with an overall discussion and their potential for providing further directions for future research.

  • The development of immersive virtual environment (IVE) technologies has allowed for virtual simulations and exploration of architectural spaces before building the facilities. Although various researchers have implemented IVEs to demonstrate their effectiveness, these rigorous methods for evaluation have obtained little attention. For education facilities, learning environments are crucial factors influencing students' academic performance and attention. Previous studies have evaluated the capabilities of spaces in terms of the learning performance of students in actual conditions. However, various spatial features cannot be experienced in real-world situations despite the introduction of IVEs that can validate the learning performance. This study aims to propose a framework to compare learning abilities in real space and identical ones implemented by two different methods: Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality. To this end, various cognitive and creativity tests are conducted i.e., N-back, Go/No-go, Spatial working memory updating, and Torrance Test of Creative Thinking-verbal tests. Then, a comparison is conducted to show cognition and creativity between real and virtual experiences.

  • The 21st century will see the formation of a“Cyber society”that, while separate form the real world, will cooperate with it, leading to the further expansion and development of world society. Cyber society allows the formation of virtual space through the connection of multiple computers in a network. In this virtual space, multiple users can communicate with each other and can collect and exchange information while moving about freely and engaging in activities. Three main technologies are vital to the construction of the Cyber society: platform technology for converting multimedia information to optical signals and performing digital processing and communication processing on such signals; communications network technology for transferring these signals from one point to another; and application technology for configuring the Cyber society that will be formed on this network. This paper describes platform technology and network technology with an emphasis on their relationship to application technology for configuring the Cyber society, and will also discuss InterSpace, one of the cyber society platform system of the Cyber society.

  • This paper presents a robotic tower-crane system using encoder and gyroscope sensors as path tracking devices. Tower crane work is often associated with falling accidents and industrial disasters. Such problems often incur a loss of time and money for the contractor. For this reason, many studies have been done on an automatic tower crane. As a part of 5-year 23-million-dollar research project in Korea, we are developing a robotic tower crane which aims to improve the safety level and productivity. We selected a luffing tower crane, which is commonly used in urban construction projects today, as a platform for the robotic tower crane system. This system comprises two modules: the automated path planning module and the path tracking module. The automated path planning system uses the 3D Cartesian coordinates. When the robotic tower crane lifts construction material, the algorithm creates a line, which represents a lifting path, in virtual space. This algorithm seeks and generates the best route to lift construction material while avoiding known obstacles from real construction site. The path tracking system detects the location of a lifted material in terms of the 3D coordinate values using various types of sensors including adopts encoder and gyroscope sensors. We are testing various sensors as a candidate for the path tracking device. This specific study focuses on how to employ encoder and gyroscope sensors in the robotic crane These sensors measure a movement and rotary motion of the robotic tower crane. Finally, the movement of the robotic tower crane is displayed in a virtual space that synthesizes the data from two modules: the automatically planned path and the tracked paths. We are currently field-testing the feasibility of the proposed system using an actual tower crane. In the next step, the robotic tower crane will be applied to actual construction sites with a following analysis of the crane's productivity in order to ascertain its economic efficiency.
