  • Reproductive losses in a herd can be huge. Fetal reabsorption or undefined infertility often remain undetected. Routine herds monitoring for exposure, controlling the introduction of potential agent carriers, appropriate biosafety procedures, and vaccination where possible are together the best security against abortion and stillbirth inducing disease. For biosecurity of local farms, we performed antibody titers of abortion and stillbirth related diseases such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV), Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii and Campylobacter fetus subsp venerealis. The blood samples were collected from 500 female Hanwoo over 1 year old of 100 farms in Jeonbuk eastern area. Champhylobater serological test was evaluated by the standard tube agglutination test (STAT) and other pathogen's antibodies were detected by indirect-enzyme linked immunoassay (I-ELISA). The seroprevalence of abortion and stillbirth inducing disease were BVDV 72.4%, IBRV 13.0%, N. caninum 1.2%, T. gondii 10.4% and C. venerealis 0.6%, irrespectively.

  • Some clinical diseases, such as granulomatous thyroiditis, tuberculosis, and sarcoidosis can cause granulomatous inflammation in thyroid, and theses have various clinical presentations. Granulomatous thyroiditis is an inflammation of thyroid gland, and may be painful and tender in case of infection, radiation, or trauma. Otherwise, autoimmune conditions, medications, or an idiopathic fibrosis may cause to be a painless thyroididtis. It is self-limited, possibly viral, inflammatory thyroid disorder usually presented with thyroid pain and systemic symptoms. Tuberculosis of the thyroid occurs only rarely and the patient may be asymptomatic. In thyroid sarcoidosis, most common findings are painless, progressive enlargement of the thyroid with normal function. We have experienced a case of chronic granulomatous inflammation of thyroid gland presenting as a painless thyroid nodule and report it with a review of literature.

  • Ginsenosides are major components in Panax ginseng and known to have numerous pharmacological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, anti-viral and anti-atherosclerosis effects. In this study, the regulatory activities of G-Rg3 and its derivative 25-hydroxy Rg3 (G-Rg3-2H) on the production of nitric oxide (NO) in macrophages and the proliferation of lymphocytes prepared from spleen and bone marrow under treatment of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or concanavalin (Con) A were examined. G-Rg3 and G-Rg3-2H dose-dependently inhibited NO production from LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells and in agreement, these compounds protected RAW264.7 cells from LPS-mediated cytotoxicity. In contrast, G-Rg3-2H dose-dependently inhibited lymphocyte proliferation induced by both LPS and Con A, while there was no inhibition by G-Rg3. Therefore, our data suggest that these compounds may be applied for NO-mediated or lymphocyte-mediated immunological diseases.

  • Mushrooms are ubiquitous in nature and have high nutritional attributes. They have demonstrated diverse biological effects and therefore have been used in treatments of various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, bacterial and viral infections, and ulcer. In particular, polysaccharides, including ${\beta}$-glucan, are considered as the major constituents responsible for the biological activity of mushrooms. Although an overwhelming number of reports have been published on the importance of polysaccharides as immunomodulating agents, not all of the healing properties found in these mushrooms could be fully accounted for. Recently, many research groups have begun investigations on biologically active small-molecular weight compounds in wild mushrooms. In this mini-review, both structural diversity and biological activities of novel bioactive substances from Korean native mushrooms are described.

  • Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the causative agent of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) and causes a considerable economic loss in swine industry. In this study, the virucidal efficacy of the disinfectant composed to n-alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride (n-ADBAC) was investigated against PEDV. A virucidal efficacy was determined with the viability of PEDV contacted with the disinfectant in Vero cells. The disinfectant and PEDV were reacted on the hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) condition. On HW condition, PEDV was inactivated with 50 fold dilutions of the disinfectant. When the antiviral effect on OM condition was evaluated, the antiviral activity of the disinfectant showed on 10 fold dilutions against PEDV. As the disinfectant possesses the virucidal efficacy against PEDV, the disinfectant solution can be used to limit the spread of animal viral diseases.

  • The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, is one of the most serious insect pest and a vector for a multitude of viral diseases to many crops, vegetables, ornamentals, and fruit trees in the world. A large number of aphids can reduce plant vigor and cause defoliation. Many insecticides have been developed and applied to control the green peach aphid. However, this aphid has displayed a remarkable ability to establish resistance to almost every insecticide. We treated 5 different insecticides registered for M. persicae on pepper leaves and investigated the effects of the insecticides by measuring the time it took to achieve 90% control of the aphids. Acetamiprid worked faster than any other insecticides while cyantraniliprole showed the slowest insecticidal effect. Pymetrozine, pyrifluquinazon, and spirotetramet provided 90% control within similar time. Iwol population's control value was higher than any other populations 24 hours after treatment. When five different unregistered insecticides for M. persicae were treated on pepper leaves, no insecticidal effect was found for gamma-cyhalothrin and novaluron and spinosad showed an insecticidal effect of up to 70% in Iwol population only. Although chlorfenapyr and dinotefuran were not registered for M. persicae, their insecticidal effects were found to be 90% or higher.

  • Quercetin is a natural flavonoid phytochemical that is extracted from various plants. Having an advantages due to its varied biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer effects, quercetin is used to treat many diseases. Recently, it has been reported that autophagy inhibition may play a key role in anti-cancer therapy. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms and anti-cancer effects of quercetin in human osteosarcoma cells via autophagy inhibition. We ascertained that quercetin inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell death, these process is demonstrated that apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway and the caspase cascade. Quercetin also induced autophagy which was inhibited by 3-MA, autophagy inhibitor and the blockade of autophagy promoted the quercetin-induced apoptosis, confirming that autophagy is a pro-survival process. Thus, these findings demonstrate that quercetin is an effective anti-cancer agent, and the combination of quercetin and an autophagy inhibitor should enhance the effect of anti-cancer therapy.

  • Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are currently being evaluated as a cell-based therapy for tissue injury and degenerative diseases. Recently, several methods have been suggested to further enhance the therapeutic functions of MSCs, including genetic modifications with tissue- and/or diseasespecific genes. The objective of this study was to examine the efficiency and stability of transduction using an adenoviral vector in human MSCs. Additionally, we aimed to assess the effects of transduction on the proliferation and multipotency of MSCs. The results indicate that MSCs can be transduced by adenoviruses in vitro, but high viral titers are necessary to achieve high efficiency. In addition, transduction at a higher multiplicity of infection (MOI) was associated with attenuated proliferation and senescence-like morphology. Furthermore, transduced MSCs showed a diminished capacity for adipogenic differentiation while retaining their potential to differentiate into osteocytes and chondrocytes. This work could contribute significantly to clinical trials of MSCs modified with therapeutic genes.

  • Herpes simpex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infects the genital and oral mucosae of human and other animals. HSV-2 infection is a widespread health problem causing various clinical syndromes including oral, genital, and ocular lesions, viral encephalitis, and recurrent diseases. Hybridorna cell lines secreting a monoclonal antibody (mAb) against the HSV-2 were produced by fusing spleen cells of HSV-2-immunized mice with Sp2/0-AgI4 myeloma cells. One hybridoma cell line was established and its monoclonal C-2, IgM, recognized the antigens of 134, 86, and 43 kDa in western blot analysis. In SDS-P AGE analysis of HSV -2 antigens, 25 bands were separated between 3D kDa and 159 kDa. In indirect immunofluorescent assay, mAbs exhibited binding to the virus antigen expressed on Vero cell infected with HSV-2.
