Water temperature is a key environmental factor controlling the epizootics of viral diseases in fish. High water temperature is associated with the rapid spread of rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) disease and with high mortality of RBIV infected fish. Although protection of fish against iridoviral disease by active immunization has been reported, little information is available concerning whether fish survived from an epizootic of iridoviral disease can naturally acquire resistance against the viral disease. In the present study, we have demonstrated that juvenile rock bream, which survived from a natural epizootic of RBIV, acquired resistance against recurrence or reinfection of RBIV, and this resistance was established during the subsequent low water temperature period. Furthermore, the possible involvement of the adaptive humoral immune response in the resistance of the juvenile rock bream was suggested by in vivo neutralization experiment.

Chemotherapy can not be applied for the control of fish viral diseases because viruses depend on host machinery for their replication. Although new control strategies including vaccination are under development, avoidance of virus introduction by rapid and correct diagnosis is the best way of fish viral disease control. Although observation of virus particles with an electron microscope is an easy method for virus detection, it take a few days for the sample preparation. In order to shorten the sample preparation time, microwave radiation was applied in the procedure. With this method, 15 seconds was enough for fixation of virus infected fish samples or cultured cells inoculated with infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus, which takes 2-4 hours with routine methods. Also four minutes was enough for polymerization of embedding resin which takes 24-48 hours with routine methods. Samples prepared with microwave were good enough for direct electron microscopic observation and immunogold labeling assay.
Oysters are known to be carriers of food-born diseases, but research on viruses in Korean oysters is scarce despite its importance for public health. We therefore tested oysters cultivated in Goheung, Seosan, Chungmu, and Tongyeong, for viral contamination using cell culture and integrated cell culture PCR (ICC-PCR) with Buffalo green monkey kidney (BGMK) and human lung epithelial (A549) cells. Additional screens via PCR, amplifying viral nucleic acids extracted from oysters supplemented our analysis. Our methods found 23.6 %, 50.9 %, and 89.1 % of all oysters to be positive for adenoviruses when cell culture, ICC-PCR, and direct PCR, respectively, was used to conduct the screen. The same methodology identified enteroviruses in 5.45%, 30.9%, and 10.9% of all cases. Most of the detected enteroviruses (81.3%) were similar to poliovirus type 1; the remainder resembled coxsackievirus type A1. A homology search with the adenoviral sequences revealed similarities to adenovirus subgenera C (type 2, 5, and 6), D (type 44), and F (enteric type 40 and 41). Adenovirus-positive samples were more abundant in A549 cells (47.3%) than in BGMK cells (18.2 %), while the reverse was true for enteroviruses (21.8 % vs. 14.5 %). Our data demonstrate that Korean oysters are heavily contaminated with enteric viruses, which is readily detectable via ICC-PCR using a combination of A549 and BGMK cells.
The maxilla rarely undergoes necrosis due to its rich vascularity. Maxillary necrosis can occur due to bacterial infections such as osteomyelitis. viral infections such as herpes zoster and fungal infections such as mucormycosis, aspergillosis etc. Herpes zoster is a common viral infection, the oral soft tissue manifestations of which are widely known and recognized. Extremely rare complications such as osteonecrosis, and secondary osteomyelitis in maxilla were observed. But, reports of spontaneous tooth exfoliation and jaw osteonecrosis following herpes zoster infection in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve are extremely rare in the literature. We report a case of maxillary necrosis by herpes zoster in an uncontrolled diabetic patient. There was extensive necrosis of the buccal and palatal mucoperiosteum and exposure of the alveolar bone. This patient was successfully treated using a removal of necrotic bone and nasolabial flap. We briefly discuss different diseases which can lead to maxillary necrosis and a review. Analysis of the pathogenesis of herpes zoster and bone necrosis are discussed.
H3N2 canine influenza virus emerged in South Korea in 2007 and subsequently spread to China and Thailand, causing epidemic or endemic respiratory diseases in dogs. Through intermammalian species transmission, the virus has also infected cats. However, no direct evidence of significant genetic evolution has been reported since its first emergence. Here, we describe in depth the genetic and molecular characteristics of the ancestral strain (i.e., the first virus isolate from South Korea) of the H3N2 canine influenza virus currently circulating in East Asia.
Although studies on Hepatitis A virus (HAV) were crucial in the establishment of the HAV infection prevention programs, no systematic investigation into HAV has been conducted since 1999. We retrospectively analyzed the data between January 2010 to December 2018 from all the patients who underwent HAV antibody tests at the Dankook University Hospital Health Care Center. Data were collected from 56,204 individuals. Overall, 34,834 (62.0%) individuals from this cohort were positive for HAV antibodies and the annual rate of anti-HAV antibody positivity was highest in 2010 (68.5%) and lowest in 2013 (54.8%). The average decline in the antibody positivity rate was 0.62% per year, showing a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). In the over 40s age group, anti-HAV antibody positivity rates decreased from 89% in 2010 to 64% in 2018 (p < 0.001), with an annual decrease of 3.1%. In the over 30s age group, it decreased from 48.2% in 2010 to 34.7% in 2018 (p < 0.001), with an annual decrease of 1.82%. This study shows that the antibody positivity rate is decreasing across age groups but given that HAV infection poses more significant risks in older patients it is important to expand the evaluations of the current and future antibody positivity rates for HAV in various age groups.

Purpose : Respiratory viruses are one of the most infectious agent in human. Acute lower respiratory tract infection(ALRTIs) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in children. This study is performed to investigate the etiologic organism, age and sex distribution, clinical manifestations and seasonal occurrence of ALRTIs in children. Methods : Viral agent was evaluated with nasopharyngeal aspirates, rhinorrhea and saliva collected from 568 patients. We confirmed viral agents in 54 patients who were younger than 15 year old. They had visited Maryknoll Hospital, Busan in Korea from January, 2002 to December, 2002 for ALRTIs. Results : The viral pathogens identified were Influenza A virus(59.3%), Enterovirus(33.3%), Adenovirus(5.6%), and Influenza B virus(1.9%). Parainfluenza virus and Respiratory syncytial virus were not detected. The occurrence of acute lower respiratory infections was high between 3 & 6 years old. The clinical patterns include pneumonia(51.9%), bronchitis(31.5%), croup(9.3%), bronchiolitis(7.4%). The respiratory viral agents had their characteristic seasonal patterns. Conclusion : Influenza A virus was the most common cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections in Busan area during the 2002. ALRTIs had high occurrence between 3 to 6 years old. And the most common clinical patterns were pneumonia and bronchitis.
Brugada syndrome (BS) is an autosomal dominant inheritance cardiac arrhythmia disorder associated with sudden death in young adults. Thailand has the highest prevalence of BS worldwide, and over 60% of patients with BS still have unclear disease etiology. Here, we performed a new viral metagenome analysis pipeline called VIRIN and validated it with whole genome sequencing (WGS) data of HeLa cell lines and hepatocellular carcinoma. Then the VIRIN pipeline was applied to identify viral integration positions from unmapped WGS data of Thai males, including 100 BS patients (case) and 100 controls. Even though the sample preparation had no viral enrichment step, we can identify several virus genes from our analysis pipeline. The predominance of human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) viruses was found in both cases and controls by blastn and blastx analysis. This study is the first report on the full-length HERV-K assembled genomes in the Thai population. Furthermore, the HERV-K integration breakpoint positions were validated and compared between the case and control datasets. Interestingly, Brugada cases contained HERV-K integration breakpoints at promoters five times more often than controls. Overall, the highlight of this study is the BS-specific HERV-K breakpoint positions that were found at the gene coding region "NBPF11" (n = 9), "NBPF12" (n = 8) and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) "PCAT14" (n = 4) region. The genes and the lncRNA have been reported to be associated with congenital heart and arterial diseases. These findings provide another aspect of the BS etiology associated with viral genome integrations within the human genome.
Primary fish-odor syndrome (FOS) is a genetic disorder caused by defective flavin-containing mono-oxygenase 3 gene (FMO3) with deficient N-oxidation of trimethylamine (TMA), causing trimethylaminuria (TMAU). By contrast, secondary FOS can be acquired by decreased FMO activities in patients with chronic liver diseases, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the present study, we examined plasma NOx concentrations and viral DNA contents as well as in vivo FMO activities and their correlations in chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) patients. Plasma concentration of NOx was significantly increased by 2.1 fold $(56.2{\pm}26.5\;vs.\;26.6{\pm}5.4\;{\mu}M,\;p<0.01)$, and it was positively correlated with plasma hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA contents $(r^2=0.2838,\;p=0.0107)$. Furthermore, the elevated plasma NOx values were inversely and significantly correlated with in vivo FMO activities detected by ranitidine-challenged test $(8.3%\;vs.\;20.0%,\;r^2=0.2109,\;p=\0.0315)$. TMA N-oxidation activities determined in CVH patients without challenge test were also significantly low (73.6% vs. 95.7%, p< 0.05). In conclusion, these results suggested that secondary FOS could be acquired by the endogenously elevated NO in patients with CVH.

The amino acid sequence of glycoprotein of Korean VHSV isolate (KR'01-1) was analyzed using the DNAStar Protean system. Based on the flexibility, hydrophilicity, antigenic index and surface probability, three regions (Gp1, Gp2 and Gp3) were selected as potential antigenic determinants. Three oligopeptides containing the amino acid sequences of the three regions were synthesized and polyclonal antibodies were raised against them. The activities of the antibodies were analyzed by Western blotting and virus neutralization test. The results showed that antibodies raised against oligopeptides Gp1 and Gp2 neutralized the infectivity of VHSV, suggesting that they can be possible candidates for subunit vaccines against VHS diseases in olive flounder.
