The present study was aimed at investigating the nutritional and physiological significance of rice bran as a source of dietary fiber as compared to pectin and wheat bran. The parameters for comparison included hypertrophy and morphology of intestines, stool weights and villus marker enzyme activity. For 6 weeks, 10 Sprague Dawley male rats were given one of six experimental diets: 1% cellulose control (CC), 5% pectin (P5), 5% rice bran(RB5), 10% rice bran(RB10), 5% wheat bran (WB5) or 10% wheat bran (WB10) based on the level of dietary fiber. Among experimental groups, food efficiency ratio and body weight gain was comparable. RB10 increased cecal and colonic tissue weights and content weights of cecum and colon as much as P5 did. Stool weight was positiviely correlated with colonic tissue weight (r=0.727, P<0.001), with colonic content weight(r=0.647, P<0.001). Small intestine length increased most in the P5 group, followed by the RB10 group. The scanning electron micrograph of jejunal villi from rice bran groups showed a leaf-shaped, smooth and regular pattern, whereas that of CC group produced a rather long shape. The wheat bran groups showed an irregular leafshaped pattern, and the pectin group typically produced leaf-shaped villi with surface damage. The activities of villus marker enzymes (maltase and sucrase) were higher in the bran-fed rats than in the control or pectin-fed rats. The results indicate than not only dietary fiber amounts but also fiber sources are closely related to the physiology and morphology of the large and small intestines in rats. Rice bran exerted effects on fecal output and trophic effects on the intestines similar to those of pectin.
Intestinal histopathological changes due to infection with Echinostcma hortense (Trematoda) were studied in rats after experimental infection with the metacercariae. The metacercariae were obtained from the tadpoles of Rana nigrcmaculata, a second intermediate host infected in the laboratory. Total 18 albino rats(Sprague-Dawley) were given 200 matacercariae each and sacrificed on the day 1, 3, 7, 11, 22 or 44 post-infection(PI) Segments of- the small intestine at 1, 3, 5, 8 and 30 cm posterior to the pylorus(PTP) were rejected and studied histopathologically. 1. The flukes were seen to have intruded into the intervillous space in the upper small intestine at early stages(1∼3 days PI), however, they were located mainly in the intestinal lumen at later stages(7∼44 days PI) . The flukes were sucking and destroying the epithelial layers of villi with their oral and ventral suckers. 2. Histopathological changes of the intestine were recognizable in as early as 1∼3 days after infection, and the changes became severer as the infection progressed. 3. The intestinal mucosa was histopathologically characterized by villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia throughout the infection period. Major villous changes were blunting, fusion, severe destruction and loss of epithelial layers of villi. Villous/crypt(V/C) height ratio was remarkably reduced from 3 : 1 in controls to 1 : 1 in severely infected animals. In the stroma of villi, inaamma- tory cell infiltrations, vascular congestion, edema, and/or fibrosis were recognized. The goblet cells were increased in number after 11 days PI. It was revealed in the present study that the pathological changes in the intestine of rats infected with E. hortense were chieay confined to the mucosal layer of the upper small intestine, however, the changes were very severe accompanying remarkable destruction of villi and loss of mucosal integrity, and persistent until 44 days PI.
This study was performed to determine the effect of onion peel extract using 70% ethanol and 95% ethanol on its anti-oxidation activity, small intestine length, and intestinal villi of high-fat fed mice. Five percent of each onion peel extract using 70% and 95% ethanol showed significant decrease of E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Total phenolic contents of onion peel extracts using 70% and 95% ethanol were $166.89{\pm}0.03$ mg/g and $160.89{\pm}0.13$ mg/g, respectively. In anti-oxidation activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-like activity of onion peel extracts were higher at 100 ug/ml concentration. The obese mice were fed high-fat diets supplemented by 1, 3, and 5% of the onion peel extracts using 70% and 95% ethanol for 4 weeks. Body weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, small intestine weight, length, villi's length, and number of bacteria in intestine were determined. Body weight of mice fed 5% of onion extracts using both 70% and 95% ethanol was significantly lower than that of control (p<0.05). However, feed intake was increased in mice fed 5% of onion extracts at both fermented ethanol levels. Small intestine weight and length of mice showed no significant change with supplementation of the onion peel extracts. However, length of small intestine villi was significantly longer than that of control. Total bacteria counts of Cl. Perfringenes and E. coli in small intestine of the mice were significantly reduced by supplementation of 5% of onion extract using ethanol, while lactic acid bacteria were increased. These results suggest that 5% of onion peel extracts using ethanol at either 70% or 95% concentration have potential to be used as an additive for body weight control and enhanced gut health; however, more research on its effectiveness is needed.
Quantitative ${\beta}$-galactosidase estimation in the intestinal mucosal cells of calves with diarrhea under experimental conditions due to rotavirus were undertaken. A quantitative decrease of 40-70% in ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity was observed in proximal and middle segments of the small intestine of the infected calves, more so in the middle segments. The decrease in the distal part of the intestine, however, was lesser (5 to 30%). The decrease in the activity was more marked on the day 2 to 6 post infection indicating the degree of the damage of the villi of the small intestine.

Infections involving Echinostoma hortense (E. hortense) are considered to more severe than infections caused by other heterophyids. Although parasite expulsion by host immune responses attenuates the symptoms of infection, the detailed mechanisms of the host immune response need to be determined, especially in local immune responses involving cytokine and immunoglobulin expressions. We infected BALB/c mice with E. hortense and examined recovery rates together with expressions of multiple cytokines and immunoglobulins in the villi and crypts of the small intestine using immunohistochemistry. We observed a close correlation between worm expulsion rates and cytokine/immunoglobulin expressions in E. hortense infected mice. This study contributes to an understanding of the relationship between the immune response and parasite expulsion in hosts.
Weaning is a complex phase when the mammal suffers the action of different stressors that contribute to negatively affect the efficiency of the intestinal mucosa and of the whole local integrated system, that acts as barrier against any nocuous agent. The components of this barrier are mechanical, chemical, and bacteriological; immunological and not. The development of contact with a saprophyte microflora and the maintenance of feed intake after the interruption of motherly nutrition are essential for the maturation of an equilibrated local immune function and for a functional integrity of villi. Opportunities and limits of some dietary strategies that can contribute to reduce negative effects of weaning on health and performance are discussed. Knowledges on the possible mechanism of action of probiotics are upgraded, particularly for their supposed role in the balance between different immune functions (effectory/regulatory). Some tools to control pathogen microflora are reviewed (acids, herbs, immunoglobulin sources) and practical feeding systems are proposed.
An unusual placentoid bullous lesion of the lung was reported. The patient was a 27-year- old woman with a 1-week history of chest pain and mild dyspnea. Chest radiographic studies showed multiple huge bullae in right upper lobe and variable-sized bullae in middle and lower lobes with collapse. She underwent right pneumonectomy with preoperative impression of bullous lung disease and emphysema. Histopathologically, the most distinctive features were villous structures within bullous airspace, which resembled placetal villi with degeneration.
Objectives: This study was carried out to investigate 1he effects of Sasammaickmoondong-tang(SME) on colonic mucosal lesions induced by indomethacin in mouse. Methods: The normal group is 1hat no inflammation elicitated mouse. Control group is that gastro-inflammation elicitated mouse. Sample group is that SME administered mouse after gastro-inflammation elicitation. Results: In the common morphology and histochemical change, control group was observed various injury-mucous surface cell, micro-villi, paneth cell, surface epithelial cell, goblet cell-by hemorrhagic erosion, while sample group was as same as normal group. In the immunohistochemical change, 1he distributions of COX-1, Bcl-2, and BrdU treated with SME noticeably increased than control group(P<0.05). The distributions of TUNEL, $NF-{\kappa}B$, COX-2, $IL-2R-\alpha$, NK-1.1, ICAM-1, and CD11b/18 treated with SME noticeably decreased than control group(P<0.05). And the distribution of SBA was as same as normal group. Conclusions: According to the above results, it is supposed that Sasammaickmoondong-tang is applicable to colonic mucosal lesions.

In order to design an effective foot surface which can provide adequate friction for a self-propelled medical microrobot moving inside the small intestine, frictional mechanisms between the small intestine inner wall and the foot surface of the robot must be understood. In this paper, mechanical interlocking effect was considered to design the surface of the foot that can generate the desired frictional force. The concept of the design was derived from the hookworm that lives inside the small intestine. Hookwarms are known to adhere to the small intestine wall by interlocking with villi on the surface of the small intestine. The interlocking mechanism was considered as the main frictional mechanism for the design of the microrobot foot surface in this work. 2 mm and 6 mm diameter solid and hollow cylindrical shaped foot specimens were designed and tested to assess the frictional force between the specimens and the porcine small intestine specimen.
