  • Shamanism is an ancient culture that is also considered as a religious rite by most of people. So, shamanism is an important part of Korean tradition and should be a significant base to the Korean exterior space organization theme. However in the field of Landscape architecture th principle of exterior spacing has not yet clearly been identified as shamanistic. Therefore believe that this study can exhibit a model for the study of shaministic space language and its application to one of Korean's village Namsa. The results of this study are summarized below; 1. Extracted models are Unspecialized· Circular·Coninuous space. These are analyzed on the basis of the shaministic space language. Also shaministic space languages are based with Korean common belief of eternal human identify, circular view of the world. 2. Applying the shamanistic space models to Namsa village shows that shamanistic space models follow the Korean space organization principle. Some area of the village do not apply, because they were built on the structure of the social hierarchy between families or the difference between head households and collateral households. 3. Applying the shamanistic space model to Namsa village shows that the shamanistic space model follows the Korean space organization principle. Therefore can say that Namsa village was built by a shamanistic system that pursued eternal human identity.

  • The object of this study is upper class house in Yang-dong village with the purpose of spatial-sociological study of traditional Korean architecture. Space is the basic element of architecture and is fundamental for understanding architecture. Space, however, can be better understood through its social context rather than through its physical or psychological attributes. Space exists in a society, providing the physical environment which frames it Social environment affects the thoght of people who are members of that society. Space is built by the people in a society and is affected by their thought. Spatial-sociological study can explain a mutual relation between people and space through context. It defines characteristics of space based on mutual relations which exist among the people, the culture of society and the environment of society but also having a sociological component, study of architectural space should consider the social context. Since architectural space is built on social and cultural bases, to understand it requires various methods of study Spatial-sociological analysis is one alternative. Using space syntax, this study analyzes houses in Yang-dong village by not only defining attributes of individual houses, but also common attributes of houses in the village. Based on common attributes of houses in the village, the attributes of Yang-dong village houses can be re-defined within the social context. the results from a spatial-sociological analysis of upper class housing of the Yang-dong village are as follows; (1) Related to confucian ideas in Chosun Dynasty : A house has a dualistic center organized with 'an-chae' and 'sarang-chae'. 'an-chae' space is organized unsociably from outside. (2) Related to various space pattern of Yang-dong village House in the Chosun Dynasty period :As variations in the types of space pattern, the village house exhibit different attributes.

Examples include (1) Yeog-maeul in Honam province (2) Samni village in Youngnam province (3) Bem Island in Seoul. Yeog-maeul is the village of Sannmin's (commoners), which is socially isolated from it's surrounding Yangban's villages. The social life in Yeog-maeul is generally divided two areas : that of men and women. The former is expressed as a life Dorang-Pak(outside of the stream) and the latter as Dorang-Ahn(inside of the stream). The former is a life of formality, sacredness. The latter is a life of informality, profaneness. Samni is a typical Yangban's village. With the support of literature such as Kohyun-Hyang-Yak(古縣鄕約). Yangban has exercised the social control which is widely practiced in various fields ranging from the fetal movement to the location of tombs. Bam Island is located Han river. It's resident had lived on the Island for over 700 Years, until they were forced to move collectively out of the Island, and settle in Chang-chun dong of Seoul. Yet, these people have kept holding Bugundang Kut, ritual for the entire village. The former Bam Islanders whose traditional culture is suppressed by the surrounding postmodern culture, have tried to fill the gap between their ideal and actual lives by symbolically realizing the former in the community ritual. In ritual life, the former Bam Islanders are deemed to sacred, while the rest of citizens of Seoul profane.
