  • OCB mode has advantages such as fast response time and wide viewing angle. But it has inevitable shortcoming which initial splay state must be changed to bend state. To overcoming this problem, OCB cell filled LC with RM monomer was cured by UV when voltage applied. Through previously mentioned methods, even if electric field is none, bend state was made by stabilized LC director. In this paper, we investigated the electric characteristics of polymer stabilized OCB mode.

  • The conventional biased vertical alignment (BVA) mode has several advantages such as rubbing- and protrusion-free, wide-viewing angle and stable LC dynamics against external pressure. However manufacturing process of BVA mode is difficult task because the pixel and bias electrode signal are different in each frame. To solve this problem, we investigated the pattern free vertical alignment (PFVA) by using the UV-curable reactive mesogen (RM), in which the LC molecules were made to be pre-tilted. Eventually transmittance and response time in PFVA mode were found to be improved as compared to BVA mode.

  • We report a novel simulation method to calculate optical transmission considering the real paths of optic introduced in a unit pixel of TFT-LCDs using three-dimensional molecular director simulation of the tensor model. The simulation of optical path transmission profile was carried out by calculating new permittivity considered the real paths of optic in liquid crystal cell. As a result, it was clarified that the electro-optic characteristics such as movement of disclination line, contrast ratio and transmittance profile show a large difference according to the viewing angle compared with the conventional method.

  • We investigated the electro-optical characteristics of amorphous (a) - twisted nematic (TN) - liquid crystal display (LCD) on polyimide (Pl) films with different polarity. It was found that the threshold voltage of a-TN-LCD is decreased with increasing the polarity of the Pl film. We considered that the threshold voltage in a-TN-LCD is affected to the surface anchoring strength with polarity of the Pl films. Also, we observed the response time of a-TN-LCD on medium polarity of the Pl film is fast compared to high polarity of the Pl film. Finally, we obtained that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD are almost same on different polarity of the PI films.

  • This study compared between tropospheric column ozone by applying the SAM method to TOMS and OMI data for northern summer. Tropospheric ozone from the SAM represents a peak over the tropical Atlantic, where it is related with biomass burning. This feature is also seen in the distribution of the model and CO. Additionally, enhancement of the SAM ozone over the Middle East, and South and North America agrees well with the model and CO distribution. However, the SAM results show more ozone than the model results over the northern hemisphere, especially the ocean (e.g. the North Pacific and the North Atlantic). The tropospheric ozone distribution from OMI data shows more ozone than that from TOMS data. This can be caused by different viewing angle, sampling frequency, and a-priori ozone profiles between OMI and TOMS. The correlation between the SAM tropospheric ozone and CO is better than that between the model and CO in the tropics. However, that correlation is reversed in the midlatitude.

  • We designed a transflective-type LCD using a twisted VA mode. Generally, a VA mode had a blue shift due to intrinsic properties. We solved this problem using spectroscopic compensation film. We used the front scattering film and negative C-plate to improve characteristics of the viewing angle and contrast ratio. As a result, we found that proposed the transflective-type TVA mode had a contrast ratio of about 80:1, a response time of 22 ms, and a reflectance of 25% in comparison with the standard MgO reflector.

  • Development of the methods to organize zeolite microcrystals into closely packed and uniformly aligned monolayers on various substrates have been pursued viewing microparticles as a novel class of building blocks. We now report that the vertically aligned zeolite monolayer can be applied as novel supramolecularly organized systems for anisotropic photoluminescence in high dichroic ratio, to study energy transfer dynamics between the internal and external fluorophores, and to develop zeolite-based advanced materials. Study of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and angle-dependent intensity change with dye molecules in different surroundings further provides insight into molecular interactions that can be used for the future design of optoelectronic device in nanometer size. In addition, this report shows that isolating of organic dye through surface treatment is crucial for preventing the egress of the incorporated dye molecules from the channels of zeolite to the solution and to enhance the anisotropic luminescence.

  • We propose optical configurations of a double-cellgap liquid crystal cell for transflective displays with wide viewing angle and high contrast ratio. The reflective part is designed in the wide-band quarter wave structure to achieve good dark state. For the transmissive part, the compensation method is applied to achieve the super-achromatic dark state, and three switching methods are used : which are vertical switching, horizontal switching to $30^{\circ}$and horizontal switching to $120^{\circ}$, to achieve the bright state.

  • In this paper, we developed a novel hyperreality display called the Head Dome Projector (HDP). The HDP is a head-mounted display consisting of a dome-shaped screen with a very small radius of 40 cm, a mobile projector with ultra-wide projection lens and LED light sources. The main feature of the HDP is very wide viewing angle of 160 degrees horizontally by 120 degrees vertically comparable to the human visual field of view without head tracking and 360 degrees by 360 degrees with head tracking. According to our subjective evaluation comparing the HDP with a flat-panel display (FPD), the HDP realizes hyperreality 2.5 points higher than that realized by an FPD in the case of ${\pm}5$ level evaluation for HD motion images.

  • We report the improved AMOLED with a-Si TFT backplane based on our unique structure. Our new structure is called Dual-plate OLED Display (DOD). It can also achieve not only higher uniformity of luminance in large-sized display due to low electrical resistance of common electrode but also wider viewing angle.
