Viewing angle improvement of TN mode by HD layer inside LC cell and a compensation film

  • Holographic diffuser(HD) layer was demonstrated to be located inside LC cell for a transmissive LCD of TFT-array on Color Filter structure. Master pattern of this layer was generated by holographic method and this pattern was replicated by the stamping of the master pattern on UV resin. Combined with a compensation film, TN-mode LCD with this layer showed improved viewing angle characteristics, especially along the up-down direction.

  • A simple wide-viewing-angle solution of electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) LCD is proposed, which is based on a single discotic compensation film. The use of a single discotic film instead of two leads to a considerable reduction in cost while high performance is maintained.

  • We have developed a high performance vertical alignment TFT-LCD, that shows a high light transmittance, and wide viewing angle characteristics with an unusually high contrast ratio. In order to optimize the electro-optical properties we have studied the effect of cell parameters, multi-domain structure and retardation film compensation. With the optimized cell parameters and process conditions, we have achieved a 24" wide UXGA TFT-LCD monitor (16:10 aspect ratio 1920X1200) showing a contrast ratio over 500:1, panel transmittance near 4.5%, response time near 27 ms, and viewing angle higher than 80 degree in all directions.

  • In this paper, we present a model to calculate the influence of the measurement spot diameter MSD on the viewing angle measurements using a conoscopic instrument. This model is verified experimentally using an EZContrast instrument and the requirements for next generation of displays are presented. We show that last generation of EZContrast XL88W and L80W allowing measurement spot diameter up to 6mm can fulfill the requirements for all the FPD generations up to 80 inches diagonal.

Characterization of auto-stereoscopic and polarization based 3D displays: a common approach

  • Even if auto-stereoscopic and polarization based 3D displays are not working with the same principles, their common aim is to provide two different images in the eyes of the observer. In this paper we show that Fourier optics instrument for viewing angle measurements can be applied to both types of displays. Luminance measurements are made at different locations and what will be seen by an observer in front of the display is predicted. Precise 3D characteristics can be derived and direct comparison becomes possible.

  • We propose a novel optical configuration for transmissive and reflective mode in the IPS LC cell to improve the viewing angle characteristics in a diagonal direction. The optical design was performed on a Poincar$\dot{e}$ sphere. From the calculation, we confirmed that the proposed configuration provides excellent viewing angle characteristics.

세막대 검사에서 막대 간 거리와 막대두께 차이에 의한 동적입체시력의 변화 (Changes of Dynamic Stereoacuity Depending on Distance between Rods and Rod Thickness in Three Rods Test)

  • 목적: 주시물체간의 거리와 물체의 크기 변화가 동적입체시력에 변화를 주는 요인인지 확인하고자 하였다. 방법: 피검사자는 평균연령 $23.89{\pm}1.76$세의 37명(남26명, 여11명)이었다. 모든 피검사자는 완전교정된 안경을 착용하였으며, 교정시력은 0.9 이상이었다. 입체시력은 세막대검사를 실시하였고, 좌 우 막대간 시야각은 $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, 그리고 $15^{\circ}$, 막대두께는 7 mm, 14 mm, 그리고 21 mm로 하여 각각의 조건을 설정하였다. 각 조건에서의 입체시력 측정은 2.5 m 거리에서 각각 3회 반복측정하여 평균값을 기록하였다. 결과: 막대두께가 7 mm, 14 mm일 때, 시야각이 커질수록 동적입체시력이 감소하였으며, 시야각 $5^{\circ}$와 비교하여 $10^{\circ}$$15^{\circ}$에서 각각 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.01). 막대두께가 21 mm일 때, 시야각이 커질수록 동적입체시력이 감소하였으며, 특히 시야각 $5^{\circ}$와 비교하여 $15^{\circ}$에서 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.01). 막대두께에 따른 동적입체시력은 막대가 두꺼워질수록 입체시력이 증가하는 경향이었다. 결론: 주시물체간의 시야각과 주시물체의 크기는 동적입체시력에 영향을 주는 요인인 것으로 나타났다.

  • Viewing angle controllable liquid crystal display (LCD) associated with fringe-field switching (FFS) mode with high image quality is proposed. In the device, one pixel is composed of main and sub pixels, in which adjacent sub pixel is patterned with pixel electrodes direction orthogonal to the adjacent one. In this way, light leakage can be generated in the all viewing angle directions except the normal direction, realizing view angle controllable LCD in both horizontal and vertical directions.

  • The discotic liquid crystal in compensating film used for the viewing angle improvement of the twist nematic liquid crystal display panel is analyzed. For the optical characterization of the compensating film, we measured the polarization state of the light passing through the film as the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the film were varied, and then we compared the measured polarization state with the calculated one. Finally we suggested the best fit configuration of the discotic liquid crystal.

고출력 LED 모델링 및 광학적 특성 분석 (Modeling and Analysis of Optical Property for High Power LED)

  • 새로운 광원으로 각종 조명장치에 응용이 되는 고출력 LED 광원의 물리적 구조로부터 시뮬레이션을 통하여 광학적 특성을 분석하였다. 설계한 LED 광원이 신뢰할 수 있는 결과를 얻기 위하여 die chip과 reflector cup의 구조적 특성을 변화시켰으며. 그 결과 Lambertian 형태의 배광 분포를 가지며. 반치 폭(Viewing angle)은 $140^{\circ}$, Total Included Angle은 $160^{\circ}$를 갖는 고출력 LED 광원을 설계하였다.
