  • Moving Object segmentation extracts an interested moving object on a consecutive image frames, and has been used for factory automation, autonomous navigation, video surveillance, and VOP(Video Object Plane) detection in a MPEG-4 method. This paper proposes new segmentation method using difference images are calculated with three consecutive input image frames, and used to calculate both coarse object area(AI) and it's movement area(OI). An AI is extracted by removing background using background area projection(BAP). Missing parts in the AI is recovered with help of the OI. Boundary information of the OI confines missing parts of the object and gives inital curves for active contour optimization. The optimized contours in addition to the AI make the boundaries of the moving object. Experimental results of a fast moving object on a complex background scene are included.

  • In this paper, an accurate and fully automatic video object segmentation method is proposed for video conferencing systems in which the real-time performance is required. The proposed method consists of two steps: 1) accurate object extraction on the initial frame, 2) real-time object extraction from the next frame using the result of the first step. Object extraction on the initial frame starts with generating a cumulative edge map obtained from frame differences in the beginning. This is because we can estimate the initial shape of the foreground object from the cumulative motion. This estimated shape is used to assign the seeds for both object and background, which are needed for Graph-Cut segmentation. Once the foreground object is extracted by Graph-Cut segmentation, real-time object extraction is conducted using the extracted object and the double edge map obtained from the difference between two successive frames. Experimental results show that the proposed method is suitable for real-time processing even in VGA resolution videos contrary to previous methods, being a useful tool for immersive video conferencing systems.

  • The new MPEG-4 video coding standard enables content-based functionalities. In order to support the philosophy of the MPEG-4 visual standard, each frame of video sequences should be represented in terms of video object planes (VOP’s). In other words, video objects to be encoded in still pictures or video sequences should be prepared before the encoding process starts. Therefore, it requires a prior decomposition of sequences into VOP’s so that each VOP represents a moving object. A parallel processing system is required an automatic segmentation to be processed in real-time, because an automatic segmentation is time consuming. This paper addresses the parallel processing: system for an automatic segmentation for separating moving object from the background in image sequences. The proposed parallel processing system comprises of processing elements (PE’s) and a multi-access memory system (MAMS). Multi-access memory system is a memory controller to perform parallel memory access with the variety of types: horizontal, vertical, and block access way. In order to realize these ways, a multi-access memory system consists of a memory module selection module, data routing modules, and an address calculation and routing module. The proposed system is simulated and evaluated by the CADENCE Verilog-XL hardware simulation package.

  • Video scene segmentation is fundamental role for content based video analysis. In this paper, we propose a new region based video scene segmentation method using continuity test for each object region which is segmented by the watershed algorithm for all frames in video data. For this purpose, we first classify video data segments into classes that are the dynamic and static sections according to the object movement rate by comparing the spatial and shape similarity of each region. And then, try to segment each sections by grouping each sections by comparing the neighbor section sections by comparing the neighbor section similarity. Because, this method uses the region which represented on object as a similarity measure, it can segment video scenes efficiently without undesirable fault alarms by illumination and partial changes.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and ground vehicles (UGV) require advanced video analytics for various tasks, such as moving object detection and segmentation; this has led to increasing demands for these methods. We propose a zero-shot video object segmentation method specifically designed for UAV and UGV applications that focuses on the discovery of moving objects in challenging scenarios. This method employs a background memory model that enables training from sparse annotations along the time axis, utilizing temporal modeling of the background to detect moving objects effectively. The proposed method addresses the limitations of the existing state-of-the-art methods for detecting salient objects within images, regardless of their movements. In particular, our method achieved mean J and F values of 82.7 and 81.2 on the DAVIS'16, respectively. We also conducted extensive ablation studies that highlighted the contributions of various input compositions and combinations of datasets used for training. In future developments, we will integrate the proposed method with additional systems, such as tracking and obstacle avoidance functionalities.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel seamless video composition method based on shape matching and Poisson equation. Video composition method consists of video segmentation process and video blending process. In the video segmentation process, the user first sets a trimap for the first frame, and then performs a grab-cut algorithm. Next, considering that the performance of video segmentation may be reduced if the color, brightness and texture of the object and the background are similar, the object region segmented in the current frame is corrected through shape matching between the objects of the current frame and the previous frame. In the video blending process, the object of source video and the background of target video are blended seamlessly using Poisson equation, and the object is located according to the movement path set by the user. Simulation results show that the proposed method has better performance not only in the naturalness of the composite video but also in computational time.

  • Moving object boundary is very important for the accurate segmentation of moving object. We extract the moving object boundary from the moving object edge. But the object boundary shows broken boundaries so we develop a novel boundary linking algorithm to link the broken boundaries. The boundary linking algorithm forms a quadrant around the terminating pixel in the broken boundaries and searches for other terminating pixels to link in concentric circles clockwise within a search radius in the forward direction. The boundary linking algorithm guarantees the shortest distance linking. We register the background from the image sequence using the stationary background filtering. We construct two object masks, one object mask from the boundary linking and the other object mask from the initial moving object, and use these two complementary object masks to segment the moving objects. The main contribution of the proposed algorithms is the development of the novel object boundary linking algorithm for the accurate segmentation. We achieve the accurate segmentation of moving object, the segmentation of multiple moving objects, the segmentation of the object which has a hole within the object, the segmentation of thin objects, and the segmentation of moving objects in the complex background using the novel object boundary linking and the background automatically. We experiment the algorithms using standard MPEG-4 test video sequences and real video sequences of indoor and outdoor environments. The proposed algorithms are efficient and can process 70.20 QCIF frames per second and 19.7 CIF frames per second on the average on a Pentium-IV 3.4GHz personal computer for real-time object-based processing.

  • Object-based coding, such as MPEG-4, enables various content-based functionalities for multimedia applications. In order to support such functionalities, as well as to improve coding efficiency, each frame of video sequences should be segmented into video objects. In this paper. we propose an effective video object segmentation method using nonlinear multiscale filtering and spatio-temporal information. Proposed method performs a spatial segmentation using a nonlinear multiscale filtering based on the stabilized inverse diffusion equation(SIDE). And, the segmented regions are merged using region adjacency graph(RAG). In this paper, we use a statistical significance test and a time-variant memory as temporal segmentation methods. By combining of extracted spatial and temporal segmentations, we can segment the video objects effectively. Proposed method is more robust to noise than the existing watershed algorithm. Experimental result shows that the proposed method improves a boundary accuracy ratio by 43% on "Akiyo" and by 29% on "Claire" than A. Neri's Method does.

  • In real time video sequence, object segmentation and tracking method are actively applied in various application tasks, such as surveillance system, mobile robots, augmented reality. This paper propose a robust object tracking method. The background models are constructed by learning the initial part of each video sequences. After that, the moving objects are detected via object segmentation by using background subtraction method. The region of detected objects are continuously tracked by using the HSV color histogram with particle filter. The proposed segmentation method is superior to average background model in term of moving object detection. In addition, the proposed tracking method provide a continuous tracking result even in the case that multiple objects are existed with similar color, and severe occlusion are occurred with multiple objects. The experiment results provided with 85.9 % of average object overlapping rate and 96.3% of average object tracking rate using two video sequences.
