  • Since July of 2012, the 3D video extension of H.264/AVC has been under development to support the multi-view video plus depth format. In 3D video applications such as multi-view and free-view point applications, synthesized views are generated using coded texture video and coded depth video. Such synthesized views can be distorted by quantization noise and inaccuracy of 3D wrapping positions, thus it is important to improve their quality where possible. To achieve this, the relationship among the depth video, texture video, and synthesized view is investigated herein. Based on this investigation, an edge noise suppression filtering process to preserve the edges of the depth video and a method based on a total variation approach to maximum a posteriori probability estimates for reducing the quantization noise of the coded texture video. The experiment results show that the proposed methods improve the peak signal-to-noise ratio and visual quality of a synthesized view compared to a synthesized view without post processing methods.

  • Recently, H.264 SE(scalable extension) has become a standard of next generation multimedia service which is one source, multi-user service in the telecommunication environment of different kinds of networks and terminal equipments. But existing DRM schemes for multimedia service are not fit for H.264 SE system. Because the amount of transmitted multimedia data is changed considering network environment and terminal equipments' performance by the system, but in the existing DRM schemes, the amount of handled multimedia data are not variable according to network environment and terminal equipments' performance. In this paper, an information security scheme combined video watermarking and encryption is presented for H.264 SE. Amount of watermarks and embedding positions are calculated by the frame number of enhancement layers which are created according to the state of networks and terminal equipments. In order to minimize delayed time by video watermarking and encryption, the video data are watermarked and encrypted in the H.264 SE compression process. In the experimental results, we confirmed that proposed scheme is robust against video compression, general signal processing and geometric processing.

  • In this parer, we propose an efficient intra prediction mode decision scheme in Scalable Video Coding(SVC) which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC(Advanced Video Coding). The proposed method in base on the characteristic of macroblock smoothness follows the statistical analysis of intra prediction mode in an enhancement layer and it decides a candidate intra prediction mode. We also propose an early termination scheme for Intra_BL mode decision where the RD cost value of Intra_BL is utilized. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces 54.67% of the computation complexity of intra prediction coding, while the degradation in video quality is negligible; for low QP values, the average PSNR loss is very negligible, equivalently the bit rate increases by 0.011%. For high QP values, the average PSNR loss is less than 0.01dB, which equals to 0.249% increase in bitrate.

  • The use of scalable video coding scheme has been regarded as a promising solution for guaranteeing the quality of service of the video streaming over the Internet because it is a capable coding scheme to perform quality adaptation depending on network conditions. In this paper, we use a streaming model that transmits base layer using TCP and enhancement layers using DCCP, which try to provide transmission reliability of the BL and TCP friendliness. Unlike pervious works, the proposed algorithm performs rate adaptation based on playout buffer status. The PoB status of the client is sent back periodically to the server and serves as a network congestion indicator. Experimental results show that our scheme improves streaming quality comparing with pervious scheme in the case of not only constant/dynamic background flows but also VBR-encoded video sequence.

  • This paper reports a novel object-detection technique in video sequences. The proposed algorithm consists of detection of objects in illuminated and occluded videos by using object features and a neural network technique. It consists of two functional modules: region-based object feature extraction and continuous detection of objects in video sequences with region features. This scheme is proposed as an enhancement of the Lowe's scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) object detection method. This technique solved the high computation time problem of feature generation in the SIFT method. The improvement is achieved by region-based feature classification in the objects to be detected; optimal neural network-based feature reduction is presented in order to reduce the object region feature dataset with winner pixel estimation between the video frames of the video sequence. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves better overall performance than other object detection techniques, and region-based feature detection is faster in comparison to other recent techniques.

  • A novel Color Image Saturation enhancement method to strengthen video images without producing oversaturated or color contour artifacts is proposed in this paper. Based on the luminance information, the relations between luminance levels and maximum chrominance vectors in each subcolor are generated for each pixel, so that the upper bound of the allowed saturation factor for a pixel can be derived, and much vivid video image can be achieved

  • In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

  • This paper reports a depth-adaptive sharpness adjustment algorithm for stereoscopic perception improvement, and presents its field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation results. The first step of the proposed algorithm was to estimate the depth information of an input stereo video on a block basis. Second, the objects in the input video were segmented according to their depths. Third, the sharpness of the foreground objects was enhanced and that of the background was maintained or weakened. This paper proposes a new sharpness enhancement algorithm to suppress visually annoying artifacts, such as jagging and halos. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve stereoscopic perception without intentional depth adjustments. In addition, the hardware architecture of the proposed algorithm was designed and implemented on a general-purpose FPGA board. Real-time processing for full high-definition stereo videos was accomplished using 30,278 look-up tables, 24,553 registers, and 1,794,297 bits of memory at an operating frequency of 200MHz.

  • MPEG-4 FGS is one of scalable video coding schemes specified In ISO/IEC 14496-2 Amendment 2, and particularly standardized as a scheme for providing fine granular quality and temporal scalabilities. In this paper, we propose a sign-bit reduction technique in embedded bit-plane coding to enhance the coding efficiency of MPEG-4 FGS system. The general structure of the FGS system for the proposed scheme is based on the standard MPEG-4 FGS system. The proposed FGS enhancement-layer encoder takes as input the difference between the original DCT coefficient and the decision level of the quantizer instead of the difference between the original DCT coefficient and its reconstruction level. By this approach, the sign information of the enhancement-layer DCT coefficients can be the same as that of the base-layer ones at the same frequency index in DCT domain. Thus, overhead bits required for coding a lot of sign information of the enhancement-layer DCT coefficients in embedded bit-plane coding can be removed from the generated bitstream. It is shown by simulations that the proposed FGS coding system provides better coding performance, compared to the MPEG-4 FGS system in terms of compression efficiency.
