The H.264/ AVC video coding standard supports the intra prediction with various block sizes for luma component and a 8x8 block size for chroma components. This new feature of H.264/AVC offers a considerably higher improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous compression standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intra prediction mode for each block size, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. In this paper, a fast block size decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computation complexity of the intra prediction in H.264/AVC. The proposed algorithm computes the smoothness based on AC and DC coefficient energy for macroblocks and compares with the nonparametric criteria which is determined by considering information on neighbor blocks already reconstructed, so that deciding the best probable block size for the intra prediction. Also, the use of non-parametric criteria makes the performance of intra-coding not be dependent on types of video sequences. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce up to 30% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.

Light Field (LF) camera captures not only the light intensity but also the light direction coming to camera. While the rich information captured by LF camera enables many interesting applications such as digital refocusing, viewpoint changing, and 3D reconstruction, but it also requires powerful coding tools to reduce its large volume of data. In this paper, we investigate using the intra prediction scheme of the versatile video coding (VVC), which is the most recent video coding technology currently under developing, to compress the LF image. The Intra Block Copy (IBC) technique in VVC is exploited considering special LF image structure. The experimental result shows that VVC intra predict ion outperforms the H.265/HEVC intra coding technique in encoding LF data irrespective of using the IBC mode or not.
Many of today's video systems have additional depth camera to provide extra features such as 3D support. Thanks to these changes made in multimedia system, it is now much easier to obtain depth information of the video. Depth information can be used in various areas such as object classification, background area recognition, and so on. With depth information, we can achieve even higher coding efficiency compared to only using conventional method. Thus, in this paper, we propose the 2D video coding algorithm which uses depth information on top of the next generation 2D video codec HEVC. Background area can be recognized with depth information and by performing HEVC with it, coding complexity can be reduced. If current CU is background area, we propose the following three methods, 1) Earlier stop split structure of CU with PU SKIP mode, 2) Limiting split structure of CU with CU information in temporal position, 3) Limiting the range of motion searching. We implement our proposal using HEVC HM 12.0 reference software. With these methods results shows that encoding complexity is reduced more than 40% with only 0.5% BD-Bitrate loss. Especially, in case of video acquired through the Kinect developed by Microsoft Corp., encoding complexity is reduced by max 53% without a loss of quality. So, it is expected that these techniques can apply real-time online communication, mobile or handheld video service and so on.

Korea DMB Service is popularized, and is used by many users. But latest display devices compared to the DMB content resolution support higher resolution and a variety of video resampling technologies has been used. Generally, subjective video quality is determined by object recognition rate in video, and increased as the edge space between objects are more clear. An edge is the boundary between an object and the background, and indicates the boundary between overlapping objects. the predicted direction in intra prediction used in H.264/AVC has the similarity up to 80% for the edge information. In the study, we propose an effective up-sampling mothed using the edge information that is extracted for the relationship between the intra prediction data and the DCT coefficient data of H.264 video encoding.

Rate-constrained coding is one of the many coding-efficiency oriented tools of H.264/AVC, but mode decision process of RDO(Rate distortion optimization) requires high computational complexity. Many fast mode decision algorithms have been proposed to reduce the computational complexity of mode decision. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for reduction of mode decision in H.264/AVC, which are the fast reference frame selection and selective intra prediction mode decision. Fast reference frame selection is efficient for inter predication and selective intra prediction mode decision can effectively reduce excessive calculation load of intra prediction mode decision. The simulation results showed that the proposed methods could reduce the encoding time of the overall sequences by 44.63% on average without any noticeable degradation of the coding efficiency.

The first frame is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the initial QP for the first frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the initial QP is determined among four constant values only depending on the bpp. In the case of low bit rate video coding, the initial QP value is fixed to 40 regardless of the output bandwidth. Although this initialization scheme is simple, yet it is not accurate enough. An accurate initial QP prediction scheme should not only depends on bpp but also on the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In the proposed scheme, we determine the initial QP according to the ratio of the first frame to the total bits allocated to a GOP. To estimate the QP of the allocated bits, Rate-QP model is used. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can predict the optimal initial QP more accurately and generate the PSNR performance better than that of the existing JVT algorithm.

The first frame is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the intial QP (Quantization Parameter) for the first frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the initial QP is determined among four constant values only depending on the bpp. In the case of low bit rate video coding, the initial QP value is fixed to 35 regardless of the output bandwidth. Although this initialization scheme is simple, yet it is not accurate enough. An accurate intial QP prediction scheme should not only depends on bpp but also on the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In the proposed scheme, we use a linear model because there is a linear inverse proportional relationship between the output bandwidth and the optimal intial QP. Model parameters of the model are determined depending on the spatial complexity of the first frame. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can predict the optimal initial QP more accurately and generate the PSNR performance better than that of the existing JM algorithm.

Due to the advances in hardware technologies for low-power CMOS cameras, there have been various researches on wireless video sensor network(WVSN) applications including agricultural monitoring and environmental tracking. In such a system, its core technologies include video compression and wireless transmission. Since data of video sensors are bigger than those of other sensors, it is particularly necessary to estimate precisely the traffic after video encoding. In this paper, we present an estimation method for the encoded video traffic in WVSN networks. To estimate traffic characteristics accurately, the proposed method first measures complexities of frames and then applies them to the bit rate estimation adaptively. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method improves the estimation of bit rate characteristics by more than 12% as compared to the existing method.
In this paper, we propose an effective stereo-view video coding method that considers stereo-view and displayer characteristics. Current many stereo video displayers are designed for not only stereo display but also conventional single view display. In these systems, the resolution of two input videos for a stereo mode is half of that of single view for compatibility with conventional single view video services. In this raper, we propose a stereo video codec to deal with both single view and stereo view services by encoding whole left image and down-sampled right image. However, direct disparity estimation is not possible between two views because the resolution of a left image is different from that of the corresponding right image. So, we propose a disparity estimation method to make use of full information of the left reference image without down-sampling. In experimental result, we achieved $0.5{\sim}0.8\;dB$ coding gain, compared with several conventional algorithms.
These days, streaming users are using ABR (Adaptive Bitrate) technique services by requesting the most adequate video rate selectively based on their own channel states. Most ABR related video rate adaptation techniques are only focused on real-time bitrate adaptations based on their own channel state, and misses energy limited characteristics that come from a mobile device's battery dependence. In other words, the mobile device's important characteristics and accompanying energy consumption are not being considered and causes dissatisfaction over streaming services. In this paper, we propose energy efficient prefetching based dynamic adaptive video streaming techniques, which saves unnecessary consumed energy while providing video rates of the same performance. Our scheme continuously turns off energy modules with enough streaming in the buffer and turns on in case of the opposite situation to save energy. Through the performance evaluation, this study's proposed scheme is 60% better than the previous work at global average mobile download speed.
