  • This paper presents a scheme to actively control the vertical vibration of aerial vehicles due to the disturbances such as the sudden change of derricking angle and the external forces by using a small plunger attached to the derricking cylinder. Simulations show that the 1st mode vibration is suppressed efficiently by the proposed method without exciting the higher modes' vibration. Detailed mathematical model of the aerial vehicle, its vibration characteristics, detection method of the 1st mode vibration and the controller design based on the lag-element and the disturbance observer are described.

  • In this paper vibration reduction characteristics of floating floors used in railway vehicles are studied. Vibration reduction characteristics are compared through a series of tests for elastically-coupled floor and rigidly-coupled floor. It was found that elastically-coupled floor has larger vibration reduction amount than rigidly-coupled floor. Around the fundamental natural frequency, however, elastic floor has poor vibration reduction effect than rigid floor. Measures to reduce structure-borne noise are also discussed based on the test results. Structure-borne noise for running railway vehicles cannot be reduced by an effort to deviate resonance between natural frequency of floors and major exciting forces. Instead, reducing vibration level of top floor and using covers which have low sound radiation coefficient will be effective for reducing structure-borne noise.

  • Theoretical and experimental free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with single or multiple transverse non-propagating open cracks are investigated. The presence of intrinsic cracks in beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures, and the existence of the multiple cracks in an anisotropic composite beam affects the free vibration characteristics in a more complex fashion compared with the beam with a single crack. Also the experimental results are well coincide with the numerical results in the decrease of natural frequencies and the transformation of mode shapes because of intrinsic cracks in the composite or aluminum beams. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection(NDT) or vibration based inspection(VBI) is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of cracked composite beams.

  • This paper presents a two-time scale approach for vibration reduction of a high speed Cartesian manipulator. High speed manipulators would be subject to mechanical vibration due to high inertia forces acting on linkages. To achieve high throughput capability, such motion induced vibration would have to be damped quickly, to reduce settling time of the manipulator end-effector. This paper develops a two-time scale model fer a structurally-flexible Cartesian manipulator. Based on the two-time scale model, a composite controller consisting of a computed torque method for the slow time-scale rigid body subsystem, and a linear quadratic state-feedback regulator for the fast time-scale flexible subsystem, is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed two time-scale controller yields good performance in attenuating structural vibration arising due to excitation from inertial forces.

  • The schematic design process is formulated to develop the vibroisolating rubber mount in optical disc drives. The dynamic model of vibration isolation system is established by using a rigid body with 6 degree of freedom and linear springs with damping property. Considering the practical vibration condition of DVDP(Digital Versatile Disk Player), the required properties of vibroisolating rubber mounts are investigated. Also finite element model of a vibroisolating rubber mount is used to obtain shape design concept and identify the characteristics of a rubber mount which satisfies the required properties from previous design stage. Finally the evaluation method of dynamic properties of vibroisolating rubber mounts is established by utilizing modal test method. Based on the developed process, vibroisolating rubber mounts with a good performance have been developed.

  • The noise level of refrigerating units is becoming more important to the manufacturer and the user of the product. Invariably, the compressor is a significant contributor to the overall noise level. Especially a major portion of the noise radiated by the vibration of the compressor shell. This paper presents an approach to relate the dynamic characteristics of the compressor shell with the noise radiation properties and the methods of redesigning the compressor shell to reduce the noise radiation. To relate the dynamic characteristics of the compressor shell with the noise radiation properties, the vibration and radiated sound were measured with the running compressor. Based on the results of these tests correlations between the shell vibration characteristics and the noise radiation properties are identified It was found that the vibration on the compressor shell and the noise radiated from the compressor were stronglycorrelatedincertainfrequencybands.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of beam-columns on elastic foundation using Differential Quadrature Method. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of a beam element acting the stress resultants and the inertia force, the governing differential equation is derived for the in-plane free vibration of such beam-columns. For calculating the natural frequencies, this equation is solved by the Differential Quadrature Method. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be used in application of Differential Quadrature Method to the field of civil engineering and practically in the structural engineering, the foundation engineering and the vibration control fields.

  • Inevitable source-uncertainties in geometry configuration, boundary condition, and material properties may deviate the structural dynamics from its expected responses. This paper aims to examine the influence of these uncertainties on the vibration of functionally graded beams. Finite element procedures are presented for Timoshenko beams and utilized to generate reliable datasets. A prerequisite to the uncertainty quantification of the beam vibration using Monte Carlo simulation is generating large datasets, that require executing the numerical procedure many times leading to high computational cost. Utilizing artificial neural networks to model beam vibration can be a good approach. Initially, the optimal network for each beam configuration can be determined based on numerical performance and probabilistic criteria. Instead of executing thousands of times of the finite element procedure in stochastic analysis, these optimal networks serve as good alternatives to which the convergence of the Monte Carlo simulation, and the sensitivity and probabilistic vibration characteristics of each beam exposed to randomness are investigated. The simple procedure presented here is efficient to quantify the uncertainty of different stochastic behaviors of composite structures.

  • In this paper, a hybrid vibration-impedance-based damage monitoring approach is experimentally evaluated for prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with local strand breakage. Firstly, the hybrid monitoring scheme is designed to alert damage occurrence from changes in vibration characteristics and to localize strand breakage from changes in impedance signatures. Secondly, a full-scale PSC anchorage is experimented to measure global vibration responses and local impedance responses under a sequence of simulated strand-breakage events. Finally, the measured data are analyzed using the hybrid monitoring framework. The change of structural condition (i.e., damage extent) induced by the local strand breakage is estimated by changes in a few natural frequencies obtained from a few accelerometers in the structure. The damaged strand is locally identified by tomography analysis of impedance features measured via an array of PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) sensors mounted on the anchorage. Experimental results demonstrate that the strand breakage in the PSC structure can be accurately assessed by using the combined vibration and impedance features.

  • In the present study, the axial vibration of the nanorods is investigated in the framework of the doublet mechanics theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of nanorods are derived by applying the Hamilton principle. A finite element method is developed to obtain the vibration frequencies of nanorods for different boundary conditions. A two-noded higher order rod finite element is used to solve the vibration problem. The natural frequencies of nanorods obtained with the present finite element analysis are validated by comparing the results of classical doublet mechanics and nonlocal strain gradient theories. The effects of rod length, mode number and boundary conditions on the axial vibration frequencies of nanorods are examined in detail. Mode shapes of the nanorods are presented for the different boundary conditions. It is shown that the doublet mechanics model can be used for the dynamic analysis of nanotubes, and the presented finite element formulation can be used for mechanical problems of rods with unavailable analytical solutions. These new results can also be used as references for the future studies.
