Predictive Control of Structural Vibration Subject to Wind Loads (풍하중에 대한 구조진동의 예측제어)

  • A procedure for the predictive control for structural vibration control in building subject to wind loads is presented. The building motions are modeled by the first mode of the response. Wind velocities are generated by the simulation using power spectral density function. Predictive control algorithm is the discrete-time formulation and that is developed as a control strategy that computes the control signal which makes the predicted process output equal to a desired process output. Results on the reduction of the dynamic response and control effectiveness of the algorithm are presented and discussed.

  • Offshore wind turbine are subjected to more various loads than general land structures and the stability of structures is supported by the piles driven deeply in the subsoil. So it is more important for offshore structures to consider seabed soil-structure interaction than land structures. And the response of a fixed offshore structure supported by pile foundations is affected by resist dynamics lateral loading due to wave forces and ocean environmental loads. In this study, offshore wind tower response are calculated in the time domain using a finite element package(ANSYS 11.0). Several parameters affecting the vibration characteristics of the natural frequency and mode shape and the tower response have been investigated.

  • Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) has been applied in various fields in order to mitigate these vibrations. The shape or configuration of TMDs being unrestricted, a large panel of designs is possible to improve their effectiveness and economical-efficiency, where ingenuity plays an essential role and is required. This study presents an application of a new-type TMD on lamp posts to reduce vibrations induced by loads with large frequency domains such as wind loads. It is shown that the proposed TMD absorbs efficiently the energy without being restricted by frequency contents of the vibration.

  • Recently, constructions of large and slender structures have been increased owing to the advancement of the structural technologies and that of the new light-weight and high-strength construction materials. Consequently, vibration problems of those slender structures have become a new issue in the area of structural engineering. Active control for those structures is the method that keeps the structures safe from the external loads, especially dynamic loads, by enforcing active forces derived from control devices. In this paper, a procedure for the instantaneous optimal control for structural vibration is presented. Numerical method and experiment are performed for evaluating the effectiveness of active control for reducing vibration of structures.

Free Vibrations and Buckling of Rectangular Plates with Linearly Varying In-Plane Loading

  • An exact solution procedure is formulated for the free vibration and buckling analysis of rectangular plates having two opposite edges simply supported when these edges are subjected to linearly varying normal stresses. The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.

  • The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.20 provides guidance on the comprehensive vibration assessment program (CVAP) to be performed on reactor internals during preoperational and startup tests. The purpose of the program is to identify loads that could cause vibration in the reactor internals and to ensure that these vibrations do not affect their structural integrity. The structural vibrational analysis program involves creating finite element analysis models of the reactor internals and calculating their structural responses when subjected to vibration loads. The appropriateness of the structural analysis methodology must be demonstrated through benchmarks or any other reasonable means. Although existing structural analysis methodologies have been proven to be appropriate and are widely used, this paper presents the development of an improved new structural analysis methodology for APR1400 reactor internals using scaled model tests.

Nonlinear forced vibration of axially moving functionally graded cylindrical shells under hygro-thermal loads

  • Studying the dynamic behavior of axially moving cylindrical shells in hygro-thermal environments has important theoretical and engineering value for aircraft design. Therefore, in this paper, considering hygro-thermal effect, the nonlinear forced vibration of an axially moving cylindrical shell made of functionally graded materials (FGM) is studied. It is assumed that the material properties vary continuously along the thickness and contain pores. The Donnell thin shell theory is used to derive the motion equations of FGM cylindrical shells with hygro-thermal loads. Under the four sides clamped (CCCC) boundary conditions, the Gallekin method and multi-scale method are used for nonlinear analysis. The effects of power law index, porosity coefficient, temperature rise, moisture concentration, axial velocity, prestress, damping and external excitation amplitude on nonlinear forced vibration are explored through parametric research. It can be found that, the changes in temperature and humidity have a significant effect. Increasing in temperature and humidity will cause the resonance position to shift to the left and increase the resonance amplitude.

Dynamic numerical analysis of single-support modular bridge expansion joints

  • Severe fatigue and noise problems of modular bridge expansion joints (MBEJs) are often induced by vehicle loads. However, the dynamic characteristics of single-support MBEJs have yet to be further investigated. To better understand the vibration mechanism of single-support MBEJs under vehicle loads, a 3D finite element model of single-support MBEJ with five center beams is built. Successive vehicle loads are given out and the vertical dynamic responses of each center beams are analyzed under the successive loads. Dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) are also calculated along with increasing vehicle velocities from 20 km/h to 120 km/h with an interval 20 km/h. The research reveals the vibration mechanism of the single-support MBEJs considering coupled center beam resonance, which shows that dynamic responses of a given center beam will be influenced by the neighboring center beams due to their rebound after the vehicle wheels depart. Maximal DAF 1.5 appears at 120 km/h on the second center beam. The research results can be utilized for reference in the design, operation and maintenance of single-support MBEJs.

Structural Vibration Analysis for a Composite Smart UAV Considering Dynamic Hub-loads of the Tilt-rotor (틸트로터 허브 동하중을 고려한 복합재 스마트 무인기 진동해석)

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a composite smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt-rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present smart UAV(TR-S2) structural model is constructed as full 3D configurations with both the helicopter flight mode and the airplane flight mode. Modal based transient response and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of structure and installed electronic equipments. It is typically shown that the helicopter flight mode with the 90-deg tilting angle is the most critical case for the induced vibration of installed electronic equipments in the front.
