  • Primary rib tumors occur in dogs at a much lower frequency than appendicular bone neoplasms. A 3-year-old 3.5kg female maltese was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital because of a 2-month history of severe coughing and a 1-month history of dyspnea, gaging, and anorexia. The plain thoracic radiography revealed a huge well-defined mass in the left thoracic cavity, and a diagnosis of primary rib chondrosarcoma was established by histopathologic evaluation of the surgical biopsy specimen. At operation, a 8-x12-x4.5-cm relatively large firm mass was found filling the lumen of the thoracic, which was diffusely attached to the left 2-9th rib. This mass oppressed the heart, left lung and diaphragm.

  • A 12-year old neutered male Yorkshire terrier dog was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University with a history of chronic intermittent diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia and weight loss of 2-months duration. On presentation, he was very cachexic and had ascites. Abnormal findings on a complete blood count and chemistry profile included mild anemia, leukocytosis, panhypoproteinemia, hypocholesterolemia, decreased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and increased serum bile acids. Radiographic findings indicated microhepatica. Peritoneal fluid analysis was consistent with transudates (total protein < 2.5 g/dl, total nucleated cell count = 2,200/ul) and cytologic examination of the fluid revealed neoplastic lymphoblasts. From these findings hepatic dysfunction and protein-losing enteropathy were attributable to abdominal lymphoma. This case suggests that cytologic examination is important in diagnosing underlying diseases of ascites, even if it is transudative effusion.

  • An one-year-old, female pointer dog with conjunctival hyperemia, corneal opaque and ocular pain in right eye was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Chungbuk National University. In the ophthalmic examination the worm was observed in anterior chamber, The heart worm antigen test was positive. A modified Knott's test was negative. The values of complete blood count and serum chemistry (TP, BUN, creatinine, AST, ALT, ALP, albumin, globuline) showed normal ranges. Any abnormality was not detected in the heart using a thoracic radiography and cardiac sonography. Therefore, this dog was diagnosed as ocular filariasis. The worm was removed by surgical incision through a limbus of cornea. The closure of limbal incision was sutured in a simple interrupted suture pattern with 6-0 silk and the eye was reinflated with sterile saline solution. Antibiotics and dexamethasone ophthalmic solution were applied to right eye every 24 hours for 7 days. To prevent latent filariasis, ivermectin was also administered on day 14 of operation. The heart worm antigen test on day 60 was negative. The dog was successfully cured.

  • A 7-month-old 8.2 kg female Siberian Husky with history of exercise intolerance, delayed growth, and tachypnea was presented to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Kyungpook National University. A holosystolic murmur was identified in cardiac ausculation. In electrocardiography, thoracic radiographs, and ultrasonography, a right axis deviation, enlarged right ventricle, stenotic main pulmonary artery, large ventricular septal defect, marked right ventricle hypertrophy, and overriding aorta with dilation were identified. The color Doppler examination showed the left-to-right shunting of blood via interventricular septal defect and the blood flow streams converging from the right and left ventricles into the aorta. The dog was diagnosed as tetralogy of Fallot. The current state of the dog is well-tolerated without any specific medication.

The 2 cases were diagnosed as periapical abscess by clinical sign and radiographs, and apicoectomies were performed for resetting the lesions and preserving the teeth. Under general anesthesia with isoflurane, periapical abscess was resected by burs and the defect was filled with zinc phosphate cement. Radiograph was perfomed at 1 week and 1 year after apicoectomy and there was no evidence of recurrence.

The yellowish changes also were observed in liver, spleen and lung, respectively. In histopathological findings, fatty accumulation was observed by microscopic observation in each organ of fatty masses. Hamatological analysis revealed the low levels of Hb, PCV and neutrophil. Blood chemical analysis indicated the high concentration of Cholestelol and Triglyceride. That patient was diagnosed as typical case of lipomatosis by clinical, blood, blood chemical and pathological examinations.

CBC, serum chemistry profile, urinalysis and urine culture were performed. Malignant cells were found in the urine sediment. Thoracic and abdominal radiography, retrograde positive-contrast cystography, retrograde double-contrast cystography, excretory urography, ultrasonography were performed. On the retrograde positive-contrast cystography examination, irregular filling defects were present on the left side of the cranial part of the bladder. Partial cystectomy performed and then medical therapy was conducted. On histopathological examinations, the lesion was confirmed as a transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

  • A 11 month-old Shihtzu was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. Clinical signs of this patient were lameness, shortening limb, angular deformity, rotation of foot, subluxaion of elbow joint and restricted range of movement of left forelimb. For the evaluation of the abnormalities of left forelimb, radiographic examination was carried out. Radiographic findings were characteristics of premature closure of distal ulna such as closure of distal ulna growth plate and cranial bowing of radius. With radiographic signs and physical examination, it was diagnosed as premature closure of growth plate of the left forelimb. After osteotomy of the radius and ostectomy of the ulna, radiographic evaluation of limb about angulation of elbow joint was performed every 2-3 weeks for 3 months. In case of premature closure of distal growth plate of ulna, radiography was very useful for diagnositic method of premature closure of distal ulna and monitoring of healing process.
