The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an imidacloprid 10% and flumethrin 4.5% polymer matrix collar against the developmental stages of Haemaphysalis longicornis infesting dogs using the hair from treated dogs in a semi-in-vitro assay set. When incubated with 0.5 g of the hair collected from the dogs installed with the drug-embedded collar after 10 days, average death rate of the larval, nymphal, and adult H. longicornis was 21.5%, 77.9%, and 100% at 30 min, 1 hr, and 2 hr, respectively. This study showed the larval stages as well as the nymphal and adult stages of H. longicornis ticks are killed upon contact with the hair from dogs treated with the collar within 2 hr.
Drug-metabolizing activities of Korean native cattle and swine were investigated from viewpoints of the cytochrome P-450's level, their dependent mixed function oxidase activities, the reactive oxygen species formation and cytosolic enzyme acitivities from each liver homogenates. Level of cytochrome P-450 in the liver microsome of Korean native cattle was $0.28{\pm}0.05nmole/mg$ and that in pigs $0.35{\pm}0.03nmole/mg$. Level of cytochrome $b_5$ of Korean native cattle was $0.24{\pm}0.06nmole/mg$, and that of pigs $0.2{\pm}0.05nmole/mg$, showing no difference between two species. NADPH P-450 reductase were higher in Korean native cattle ($58.3{\pm}5.3nmole/mg/min$) than in pigs ($29.9{\pm}3.8nmole/mg/min$)(p<0.01). The activities of cytochrome P-450 dependent monooxygenases such as ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (cattle, $96.5{\pm}12.5nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $13.6{\pm}2.1nmole/mg/min$), N-benzphetamine N-demethylase (cattle, $5.23{\pm}0.82nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $0.76{\pm}0.3nmole/mg/min$) and aniline hydroxylase (cattle, $0.95{\pm}0.1nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $0.33{\pm}0.08nmole/mg/min$) were much higher in Korean native cattle than in swine(p<0.01). However, the activity of testosterone $7{\alpha}$-hydroxylase was higher in swine ($90.4{\pm}1.2nmole/mg/min$) than cattle (cattle, $32.8{\pm}1.2nmole/mg/min$). Interestingly, testosterone $16{\alpha}$-hydroxylase, a marker enzyme for P-450 IIA was not detected in both animal species. These results suggest that Korean native cattle and pigs have high contents of P-450 IA1 and P-450 IIIA. Total sulfhydryl compound (cattle, $10.3{\pm}1.1nmole/mg$ ; Pigs, $14.5{\pm}1.8nmole/mg$) and glutathione related enzymes except glutathione reductase (cattle, $38.1{\pm}7.9nmole/mg/min$; swine, $22{\pm}3.6nmole/mg/min$) showed higher levels in swine than in Korean native cattle. Superoxide dismutase (cattle, $7.64{\pm}0.84nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $4.47{\pm}0.94nmole/mg/min$) and catalase (cattle, $30.4{\pm}3.7nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $17.2{\pm}1.8nmole/mg/min$) were remarkably higher in Korean native cattle than in swine (p<0.05).
The effects of continuous administration of tiletamine-zolazepam(T-Z) on the blood, liver and kidney of dogs were evaluated. The drug was repeatedly administered into ten mongrel dogs intramuscularly at dose of 10mg/kg for every seven days. Hematology(PCV, WBC, RBC, TP, Fibrinogen) and serum chemistry(ALT, AST, BUN, Creatinine) were monitored for 14 days postinjection. No significant changes in PCV values, total RBC counts and plasma total protein values was found. Total WBC counts and fibrinogen values were significantly increased from 2 days to 7 days postinjection. There was no significant change in ALT, AST, BUN and creatinine levels. All animals were euthanized and necropsied at 14 days postinjection. No gross lesion and pathologic lesion was found on liver and kidney in necropsy finding.
Fecal examination for survey of natural prevalence of Balantidium coli was performed on 1080 healthy bred pigs in Korea, and the positive rate was 56.2%. In order to observe if Balantidium coli might be a secondary invader after certain initiation of the intestinal lesions, the piglet groups preinfected with the protozoa experimentally were treated with Salmonella cholerasuis, Trichuris. cold stress, HCI, and immunosuppressive drug respectively, but no relation was found between them. Also the protozoa were not detected from the intestinal lesions spontaneously formed of 107 pigs which were checked in the slaughter house. According to the above results, Balantidium coli is not directly associated with the formation of any lesions in the pig's large intestine.
Porcine pneumonia is caused by Pasturella multiocida and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. To identify a potent drug for antipneumonia therapy, several herbal compounds showing antibacterial effects were screened, and it was found that a methanol extract of Coptidis rhizoma root stem exhibited activity against both pneumonia-causing bacteria. Using an activity-guided fragmentation procedure, an isoquinoline alkaloid was isolated which would be responsible for the antibacterial activities against P. multocida and A. pleuropneumoniae.
Sulfamethazine sodium was orally administrated to Sprague Dawley female rats(body weight: 200~250g) with the sonde caude at the dose of 20mg of sulfamethazine sodium per 100g of body weight for 3 days to investigate the depletion rate of the drug from liver, kidney and muscle of rat. The results obtained were summerized as follows; 1. The mean concentrations of sulfamethazine in liver according to the time lapsed after oral administration of the sulfamethazine sodium were decreased from 1.27ppm at day 1 to 0.28ppm at day 4. 2. Sulfamethazine concentrations in kidney according to the time lapsed after oral administration of the sulfamethazine sodium were decreased from 0.77ppm at day 1 to 0. 12ppm at day 4. 3. The mean concentration of sulfamethazine in skeletal muscle according to the time lapsed after oral administration of the sulfamethazine sodium was at or below 0.09ppm within 4 days after withdrawl of medicated solution.
To study the effects of oxytocin and three parasympathomimetic drugs such as neostigmine, bethanechol, and pilocarpine in reduction of interval between birth and incidence of intrapartum stillborn pigs, 213, sows and gilts which had been kept under the same condition, were randomly allotted to 4 treatment and one control groups. The side reactions of three parasympathomimetic drug were also examined. The results obtained were summarized as followings. 1. Parasympathomimetic-treated groups revealed tendence to shorter interval between birth than oxytocin-treated or control groups. 2. Stillbirth rate per litter was significantly less (p<0.01) in the parasympathomimetic-treated groups than in the oxytocin-treated or control groups. 3. Moderate to severe salivation and vomiting were found in many clams of the pilocarpine-treated and bethanecol-treated groups. The neostigmine-treated group showed nearly no side reaction and neostigmine found to the safest among three parasympathomimetic drugs.
Two hundred and twenty-seven strains of Escherichia coli isolated from 25 hens (12 hens received tetracycline neomycin and sulfadimethoxine, and 13 hens not received antibiotics) were studied for the drug resistance and distribution of R factors. About 74 per cent of E. coli strains isolated from hens of a herd received antibiotics were resistance to tetracycline (TC) streptomycin (SM), chloramphenicol (CM), kanamycin (KM), ampicillin (AP) and sulfisomidine (Su), alone or in combination thereof, but only a hen among a herd not received antibiotics excreted E. coli resistant to TC and SM. Among resistant strains, about 7% were found to be resistant to TC and SM, whereas 93% were resistant to three or more antibiotics. The most common pattern was the quadruple resistant to SM, TC, KM and Su (28.7%), and followed by triple ones to SM, TC and Su (25.3%), and SM, TC and KM (24.7%). About 84% of resistant strains carried R factors which were transferable to the recipient by conjugation.
One hundred and fifty seven Escherichia coli strains isolated from 18 cattle (9 dairy cattle received penicillin, streptomycin (SM) or sulfadimethoxine for treatment of diseases and 9 Korean native cattle not received antibiotics) were studied for the drug resistance and distribution of R factors. Of 88 E. coli strains isolated from cattle not received antibiotics, only 1 strain was resistant to SM, but about 46 per cent of 69 E. coli strains isolated from cattle received antibiotics were resistant to SM, tetracycline (TC), ampicillin (AP), kanamycin (KM), chloramphenicol (CM), and sulfisomidine (Su), alone or in combination thereof. Of resistant strains, about 72% were resistant to three or more antibiotics, but 28% were found to singly resistant. The most frequent resistant pattern was triple resistance to AP, KM and Su (37.6%), and quadruple one to SM, TC, CM and Su (12.5%). About 28% of resistant strains carried R factors which were transferable to E. coli ML 1410 $NA^r$ by conjugation.
Although Lycaconitine, one of the alkaloids of Radix Jingyu, had been identified in 1884, its use in practice has not been known probably because of our limited knowledge on pharmacologic actions of the drug. Recently repellent efficacy of Lycaconitine against Korean cattle ticks and goat ticks was demonstrated. Obviously, there in a need to investigate toxicologic aspects of Lycaconitine before its widespread use for the control of animal ticks can be attempted. As will be reported in this paper, Lycaconitine Shows a wide margin of safety in the concentration applied as cattle or goat tick repellent.
