In this study, basic design data which were required for development of highly efficient ice storage system with low temperature latent heat were experimentally obtained. The ice storage system considered in this study was the one that has been widely used in the developed country and called the ice-on-coil type. Using the system, the ice storage performance for various design parameters which were the flow direction and the inlet temperature of the secondary fluid was tested. In addition, the clockwise variation of the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM in the ice storage tank were investigated. During the melting processes in the ice storage tank with several vertical tubes, decrease of the solid-liquid interface area, which was the heat transfer area, between the floating ice and the water made the decreasing rate of IPF less. Also, the total melting energy for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow during the melting process, but this trend did not appear if the initial temperature of the PCM was $4^{\circ}C$. The average ice recovery efficiency for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow.
An adiabatic counter-current vertical two-phase flow of air and water in narrow rectangular channels with offset strip fm was investigated experimentally. Tests were systematically performed with downward liquid superficial velocities and upward gas velocities covering 0 to 0.06 m/s and 0 to 2.5 m/s ranges, respectively. Two-phase flow regimes were classified by examining the video images of flow patterns in transparent test sections of 760 mm long and 100 mm wide channel with gaps of 3.0 and 5.0 mm. The channel average void fraction was measured by the quick-closing valve method. Unlike the flow regimes in the channels without fin, where bubbly, slug, chum, and annular flow were identified, only bubbly and chum flow regimes were found for the channels with offset strip fin. However the existence of fin in the channels showed negligible effects on the void fraction. Instead counter-current flow limitations were found to happen at lower air superficial velocity once offset strip fin was introduced in narrow rectangular channels.
Circulation in the Jinhae Bay in the southern sea of Korea is examined using the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) with a free surface in a sigma coordinate, governed by primitive equations. The model well corresponds to the time series of the observed velocities at several layers obtained from a long-term mooring observation. In the residual velocity field of the model, persistent downward flow fields are formed along the central deep regions in the bay, and they are caused by bottom topographic effect. In addition, a comparison between a depth-averaged (2D) model and the POM is given, and a dependance of the results on bottom drag coefficient is also examined.
A single-beam gamma densitometer is utilized to measure the average void fraction in a small diameter stainless steel pipe under critical flow conditions. A typical design of a single-beam gamma densitometer is composed of a sealed gammaray source, a collimator, a scintillation detector, and a data acquisition system that includes an amplifier and a single channel analyzer. It is operated in the count mode and can be calibrated with a test pipe and various types of phantoms made of polyethylene. A good average void fraction is obtained for a small diameter pipe with various flow regimes of the core, annular, stratified, and bubbly flows. Several factors influencing the performance of the gamma densitometer are examined, including the distance between the source and the detector, the measuring time, and the ambient temperature. The void fraction is measured during an adiabatic downward two-phase critical flow in a vertical pipe. The test pipe has an inner diameter of 10.9 mm and a thickness of 3.2 mm. The average void fraction was reasonably measured for a two-phase critical flow in the presence of nitrogen gas.

Natural convection of low Prandtl number fluids with $Pr{\leq}0.2$ in a narrow horizontal annulus is numerically investigated. For $Pr{\leq}0.2$, hydrodynamic instability induces oscillatory multicellular flows consisting of multiple like-rotating cells. For a fluid with $Pr{\approx}0$, the region in which instability of conduction regime first forms is near the vertical section of annulus, and the multiple cells are distributed uniformly in the lower and upper regions of annulus. As Pr increases, however, the cells are shifted upwards. The like-rotating cells drift downward, as time goes on, and the speed of travel increases with increase of Pr. For a fluid with Pr=0.1, a flow with period-4 solution is observed between chaotic states.

Understanding the nonlinear flow caused by orographic effects can be valuable in siting of new businesses, industries, and transportation facilities. In spite of recent work on large-amplitude waves and wave breaking, the studies of flow around large scale mountains have just begun. The generative mechanism of lee vortices in the lee of large scale mountain is investigated by Ertel's theorem. The CSU RAMS is used as a numerical model. According to the numerical results, the isentropes are depressed behind the large scale mountains. This means the vortex lines must run upward and downward along the depression surface because vortex lines adhere to isentropic surfaces. Therefore, the vertically oriented vorticity can be formed in the lee of the large scale mountain. This vorticity plays an important role for orographic precipitation, because strong vertical velocity and cloud bands are developed along isothermal deformation surface.

The numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal-fluid phenomena occurred inside the experimental apparatus during a PCCS, used to remove heat released in accidents from a containment of light water nuclear power plant, operation. Numerical simulations of the flow and heat transfer caused by wall condensation inside the containment simulation vessel (CSV), which equipped with 18 vertical heat exchanger tubes, were conducted using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the wall condensation model were used for turbulence closure and wall condensation, respectively. The simulation using the actual size of the apparatus. However, rather than simulating the whole experimental apparatus in consideration of the experimental cases, calculation resources, and calculation time, the simulation model was prepared only in CSV. Selective simulation was conducted to verify the effects of non-condensable gas(NC gas) concentration, CSV internal pressure, and wall sub-cooling conditions. First, as a result of the internal flow of CSV, it was observed that downward flow due to condensation occurred surface of the vertical tube and upward flow occurred in the distant place. Natural convection occurred actively around the heat exchanger tube. Due to this rising and falling internal flow, natural circulation occurred actively around the heat exchanger tubes. Next, in order to check the performance of built-in condensation model using according to the non-condensable gas concentration, CSV internal flow and wall sub-cooling, the heat flux values were compared with the experimental results. On average, the results were underestimated with and error of about 25%. In addition, the influence of CSV internal pressure and wall sub-cooling was small, but when the condensate was highly generated due to the low non-condensable gas concentration, the error was large compared to the experimental values. This is considered to be due to the nature of the condensation model of the CFX code. However, in spite of the limitations of CFD, it is valid to use the built-in condensation model of CFD for PCCS performance prediction from a conservative perspective.

An experimental study on the countercurrent two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been performed. The void fraction and the pressure gradient were investigated using air and water in 760 mm long, 100 mm wide. vertical test sections with 2, 3 and 5 mm channel gaps. Tests were systematically performed with downward liquid superficial velocities and upward gas velocities covering 0 to 0.08 and 0 to 2.5 m/s ranges. respectively. the experimental results were compared with the previous correlations, which were mainly for round tubes, and the qualitative trends were found to be in good agreements. However the quantitative discrepancies were hardly neglected. as the superficial gas velocities increased, the void fraction increased and the pressure gradient decreased, where the effects of the liquid superficial velocities were infinitesimal. as the gap width of the rectangular channel increased the void fraction and the 2-phase frictional pressure gradient approached those values for the round tubes. Equi-periphery diameter, rather than the hydraulic diameter, seemed to be more effective in the analysis of two-phase flow behavior.

Since subway fire disaster at Daegu, Korea smoke control system and passengers evacuation distance has been focused to reform. Existing smoke control facilities need to expand volume of ventilation capacity however, the complicate subway station structure can hardly react dispersion of smokes from massive subway cabin fire. Smoke flow at platform level move upward thought vertical stairway and passengers evacuation goes with same direction. The victims of evacuees from subway station fire mainly due to exposure of heat radiation and smoke. The study demonstration the effect of downward evacuates stairway system by separating evacuation route to smoke movement pass way including saving times of evacuation.
