An experiment was carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils on the condition of uniform heat flux. The present work was conducted for various ranges for Dean number(1794~1321), Prandtl number (2.5~4.5), curvature ratio parameters (22~60). Heat transfer to steady viscous flow in coiled tubes of circular cross section was studied for fully developed velocity and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of uniform heat flux. The peripherally local Nusselt number correlated as a function of Dean and Prandtl numbers. We studied the flow in heat coiled tubes under the influence of both centrifugal and buoyancy forces in order to gain insight into the flow pattern. In the present study, we obtained three emperical formulas, $Nu_v=0.0231Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.13}$ (vertical) $Nu_c=0.0241Re^{0.86}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.08}$ (corrugated) $Nu_h=0.0227Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.09}$ (horizontal).
In locations where the cost or concrete is relatively high, or in situations where the weight or concrete members is to be kept to a minimum, it may be economical to use hollow reinforced concrete vertical members. Hollow reinforced concrete columns with low axial load, moderate longitudinal steel percentage, and a reasonably thick wall were found to perform in a ductile manner at the flexural strength, similar to solid columns. However, hollow reinforced concrete columns with high axial load, high longitudinal steel percentage, and a thin wall were found to behave in a brittle manner at the flexural strength, since the neutral axis is forced to occur away from the inside face of the tube towards the section centroid and, as a result, crushing of concrete occurs near the unconfined inside face of the section. If, however, a steel tube is placed near the inside face of a circular hollow column, the column can be expected not to fail in a brittle manner by disintegration of the concrete in the compression zone. Design recommendation and example by moment-curvature analysis program for curvature ductility are presented. Theoretical moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. In this paper, a unified stress-stain model for confined concrete by Mander is developed for members with circular sections.
The analysis of simply supported single-cell skew-curved reinforced concrete (RC) box-girder bridges is carried out using a finite element based CsiBridge software. The behaviour of skew-curved box-girder bridges can not be anticipated simply by superimposing the individual effects of skewness and curvature, so it becomes important to examine the behaviour of such bridges considering the combined effects of skewness and curvature. A comprehensive parametric study is performed wherein the combined influence of the skew and curve angles is considered to determine the maximum bending moment, maximum shear force, maximum torsional moment and maximum vertical deflection of the bridge girders. The skew angle is varied from 0° to 60° at an interval of 10°, and the curve angle is varied from 0° to 60° at an interval of 12°. The scantly available literature on such bridges focuses mainly on the analysis of skew-curved bridges under dead and point loads. But, the effects of actual loadings may be different, thus, it is considered in the present study. It is found that the performance of these bridges having more curvature can be improved by introducing the skewness. Finally, several equations are deduced in the non-dimensional form for estimating the forces and deflection in the girders of simply supported skew-curved RC box-girder bridges, based upon the results of the straight one. The developed equations may be helpful to the designers in proportioning, analysing, and designing such bridges, as the correlation coefficient is about 0.99.
The low-floor tram is a kind of railway vehicles which is operated on the street way track. For reducing the radius of curvature of the track, the tram consists of some carbody modules, and the articulation systems connect and support these carbody modules. The kind of articulation systems would be the hinge type and the pitching type. The hinge type articulation could allow only the yawing motion of the carbody modules, and the pitching type articulation could allow the pitching and yawing motions of the carbody modules simultaneously. With these function of the articulation systems, the tram could be operated on the horizontal and vertical curvature of the track. The number of each type of articulation could be decided with the number of carbody modules, and the manufacturer would decided the position of each type of the articulation in the view of the stability of carbody modules in the operation condition.

FBG sensors are able to measure the strain of structures more easily and durable than electronic resistance gages and thus many researches are on the way to apply the FBG sensor for response monitering of infrastructures. This study investigates the deflection estimation technique using FBG sensors. Several FBG sensors are multiplexed in single optical fiber and installed. in parallel pairs along the length of the structure. The measured strains at the top and bottom of a cross section can be transferred to the curvature of the section which can be used to calculate its displacement. It has been demonstrated that the estimated deflections using the FBG sensor are compared well with the readings from displacement transducers. The results show that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection of the structures for various loading conditions including impact and dynamic loads, which is crucial in the structural health monitoring.
This paper deals with the applicability of long-gauge deformation fiber optic sensors (FOS) to prestressed concrete structures. A main motivation is the desire to monitor the deflection of the railway bridges without intervenes of the signal intensity fluctuations. A 25 m long, 1.8 m deep PSC girder was fabricated compositely with 22 cm thick reinforced concrete deck. Two pairs of 3 m long-gauge sensors are attached to the prestressed concrete girder with parallel topology. Using the relationship between curvature and vortical deflection and the quadratic regression of curvatures at the discrete point, it is possible to extrapolate the deflection curve of the girder. The estimated deflection based on the developed method is compared with the results using conventional strain gauges and LVDTS. It has been demonstrated that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection and neutral axis position of the prestressed concrete girder up to weak nonlinear region.
In this study, residual stress distribution in multi-stacked film by MEMS (Micro-Electro Mechanical System) process is predicted using Finite Element method (FEM). We evelop a finite element program for residual stress analysis (RESA) in multi-stacked film. The RESA predicts the distribution of residual stress field in multi-stacked film. Curvatures of multistacked film and single layers which consist of the multi-stacked film are used as the input to the RESA. To measure those curvatures is easier than to measure a distribution of residual stress. To verify the RESA, mean stresses and stress gradients of single and multi layers are measured. The mean stresses are calculated from curvatures of deposited wafer by using Stoney's equation. The stress gradients are calculated from the vertical deflection at the end of cantilever beam. To measure the mean stress of each layer in multi-stacked film, we measure the curvature of wafer with the left film after etching layer by layer in multi-stacked film.
In this paper, it is studied that kinematic analysis of a 5-axis ultrasonic inspection equipment. The equipment is comprised of three straight axes and two rotary axes. With features of ultrasonic, the transmitter and receiver of the equipment are vertical to a test surface, operating at regular intervals. To perform this well, the motions of every link should be found on the based of kinematic analysis of the equipment. We chose starting point for testing and defined relations among all links through transformation of coordinates. For double curvature-shaped test object, we generated test paths. To follow these, we found motions of all links using inverse kinematics. By using Matlab/Simulink, simulator was developed, so that we could find out desired trajectories of main axes for a scan.
This study examines the influence of curved, steel, I-girder bridge configuration on girder end reactions and cross frame member forces during seismic events. Simply-supported bridge finite element models were created and examined under seismic events mimicking what could be experienced in AASHTO Seismic Zone 2. Bridges were analyzed using practical ranges of: radius of curvature; girder and cross frame spacings; and lateral bracing configuration. Results from the study indicated that: (1) radius of curvature had the greatest influence on seismic response; (2) interior (lowest radius) girder reactions were heavily influenced by parameter variations and, in certain instances, uplift at their bearings could be a concern; (3) vertical excitation more heavily influenced bearing and cross frame seismic response; and (4) lateral bracing helped reduce seismic effects but using bracing along the entire span did not provide additional benefit over placing bracing only in bays adjacent to the supports.
