  • A series of data sets for the heat transfer coefficient versus wall superheat has been obtained experimentally using various combinations of tube diameters ($9.7{\sim}25.5mm$), surface roughness ($15.1{\sim}60.9nm$), and tube orientations (horizontal and vertical) to obtain effects of tube diameters on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. In addition, the results are compared with the well known Cornwell and Houston's correlation for horizontal tubes to identify the deviation of the present experimental data from the correlation and the applicability of it to vertical tubes. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the tube diameter increases for both horizontal and vertical tubes and they are in good agreement with the Cornwell and Houston's correlation within ${\pm}20%$ scatter range.

  • With the progress of optical communication technology recently, the development of micro actuator using MEMS technology has been made for optical switching. The actuation types are various; electrostatic, electromagnetic, and electrostatic +electromagnetic etc. Among them, the electrostatic type is the most popular because of the relative ease of fabrication, integration and shielding as well as low power consumption. However, it needs a high voltage to generate a larger driving force. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new type of electrostatic actuator with an extra vertical electrode in addition to the horizontal one. The vertical electrode also lays a role of making the stable angular rotation as a stopper. From the theoretical analysis and experiment, we find the actuation voltage can be reduced up to 50 % of that of the conventional one.

  • The performance of one-particle stochastic Lagrangian models for passive tracer dispersion are evaluated against measurements in horizontally-homogeneous neutrally-stratified atmospheric surface layer. State-of-the-technology models as well as classical Langevin models, all in class of well mixed models are numerically implemented for inter-model comparison study. Model results (far-downstream asymptotic behavior and vertical profiles of the time averaged concentrations, concentration fluxes, and concentration fluctuations) are compared with the reported measurements. The results are: 1) the far-downstream asymptotic trends of all models except Reynolds model agree well with Garger and Zhukov's measurements. 2) profiles of the average concentrations and vertical concentration fluxes by all models except Reynolds model show good agreement with Raupach and Legg's experimental data. Reynolds model produces horizontal concentration flux profiles most close to measurements, yet all other models fail severely. 3) With temporally correlated emissions, one-particle models seems to simulate fairly the concentration fluctuations induced by plume meandering, when the statistical random noises are removed from the calculated concentration fluctuations. Analytical expression for the statistical random noise of one-particle model is presented. This study finds no indication that recent models of most delicate theoretical background are superior to the simple Langevin model in accuracy and numerical performance at well.

  • The purpose of this study was to minimize salt water intrusion into freshwater aquifers and limit the development of freshwater aquifers, by selecting an appropriate excavation depth of in the western coastal area of Jeju Island. The study site was mostly basaltic lava, which was mainly composed of trachy basalt. A vertical logging test was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution of the groundwater and saline groundwater interface in the study well. It was found that freshwater groundwater, saline groundwater, and freshwater groundwater are distributed from the surface to approximately 16 m, 16~50 m, and 50~60 m, below the ground, respectively. In order obtain saline groundwater and minimize the inflow of freshwater into this well, the drilling depth should be limited in the range of 16~50 m from the surface. Thus, saline groundwater well development should be carried out with reference to the measurement results, which depend on the drilling depth and EC (electrical conductivity) obtained with drilling apparatus for geology and ground handling.

  • A combination of drilling, geophysical well logging, and electrical soundings was performed to evaluate seawater intrusion in Baeksu-eup, Youngkwang-gun, Korea. The survey area extends for over 24 $km^2$. To delineate the extent of seawater intrusion, 60 vertical electrical soundings (VES) have been carried out. Twelve wells were also drilled for the collection of hydrogeological, geochemical, and geophysical well logging data, to delineate the degree and vertical extent of seawater intrusion. To map the spatial distribution of seawater in this coastal aquifer, geophysical data and hydrogeochemical results were used, and the relation between the resistivity of groundwater and equivalent NaCl concentration was found. Layer parameters derived from VES data, various in-situ physical properties from geophysical well logging, and the estimated equivalent NaCl concentration were very useful for quantitative evaluation of seawater intrusion. Our approach for evaluating seawater intrusion can be considered a valuable attempt at enhancing the use of geophysical data.

  • The effectiveness of various electrode configurations in horizontal mappings and 1-D inversions of vertical sounding data for delineating 2-D structures was studied. Apparent resistivity values of three point, dipole-dipole, Wenner, and Schlumberger mappings were simulated for such structures as vertical dyke, tabular prism, buried vertical fault, ramp and complex structure by finite difference method (FDM) and they were compared with each other. Also 2-D cross sections for three structures obtained by interpolation of 1-D inverted sounding data in terms of three layers were compared for Schlumberger and Wenner arrays. On these cross sections, horizontal and vertical resistivity interfaces of the 2-D structures are revealed relatively clearly. Apparent resistivity curves of Schlumberger mapping show vertical resistivity discontinuities very well. On the whole, Schlumberger array is superior to the other arrays in electric sounding as well as mapping. This study clearly indicates that interpretations of 2-D structures based on 1-D inversion are possible.

  • Pediatric surgeons are familiar with the posterior sagittal approach to the rectum at sacrococcygeal area and well oriented with the anatomy because of the Penal procedure for imperforate anus. The author utilized the posterior vertical elliptical incisions in 12 cases of sacrococcygeal teratoma since 1987. For presacral tumor(type IV)$^2$, the incision was exactly same as the posterior sagittal procedure for imperforate anus. But the out-growing(type I) or dumbbell-shaped(type II & III) tumors, a vertical elliptical incision was required. For the laterally deviated tumors, a vertical and half-chevron incision was utilized in one case, but an unbalanced vertical elliptical incision was acceptable for the remaining two cases, with shrinkage of the overlying skin. In dumbbell-shaped tumors(type II & III), the narrow waist of the tumor was at the level of the levator muscle, which formed a muscle-belt on the tumor waist. A careful dissection to save the muscle-belt seemed to be the most important point during this procedure, utilizing the nerve-stimulator. After complete removal of the tumor and the coccyx, the levator muscles and the skin were closed in vertical fashion along the midline. For the caudally extending tumors in 3 cases, the muscle complex was divided in midline. Nothing by mouth and total parenteral nutrition was maintained for 1 week and then laxatives were given for 2 weeks in order to give the sphincters rest. Operative scars were acceptable resembling natural vertical midline folds, and the sphincter function was continent in all cases. In conclusion, vertical elliptical incision in sacrococcygeal teratoma is recommended because of the acceptable scar, functional restoration, and because it is a familiar procedure particularly for the pediatric surgeons who are accustomed performing posterior sagittal approach for imperforate anus.

  • While the vertical open type of heat exchanger is more effective in areas of abundant groundwater, and is becoming more widely used, the heat exchanger most commonly used in geothermal heating and cooling systems in Korea is the vertical closed loop type. In this study, we performed numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties to evaluate the efficiency of the vertical open type in areas of abundant groundwater supply. The first simulation indicated that the vertical open type using groundwater directly is more efficient than the vertical closed loop type in areas of abundant groundwater. Furthermore, a doublet system with separated injection and extraction wells was more efficient because the temperature difference (${\Delta}$) between the injection and extraction water generated by heat exchange with the ground is large. In the second simulation, we performed additional numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy that incorporated heat transfer, distance, flow rate, and groundwater hydraulic gradient targeting a single well, SCW (standing column well), and doublet. We present a flow diagram that can be used to select the optimal type of heat exchanger based on these simulation results. The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to examine the adequacy of the geothermal energy utilization system based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties of the area concerned, and also on a review of the COP (coefficient of performance) of the geothermal heating and cooling system.

  • The submarine played an active part in military operation during the last of nineteenth century. Today, as an aid to science and technology and technology m the submarine is being utilized in the fields of deep sea investigation and sight-seeing as well as military activities. When the stability and the maneuverability of a submarine is studied, the problems arise on the vertical plane as well as the horizontal plane. However, the horizontal plane has been dealt with in the study of surface vessels. The author attempts to look into the hydrodynamic directional stability at high speeds (above 10knots) on the vertical plane, and to clarify the submarine's depth-rate as related to the factors that affect it : the distance from the center of buoyancy to the center of gravity, the speed of the submarine, and the position and the area ratio of hydroplane. In this study, the author considered the two groups of dimensionless derivatives of submarine. It is confirmed that the depth-rate of a submarine is decreased when the length, of BG is increased under the continuous submerging status. But the depth-rate is increased when the area ratio of hydroplane is enlarged. It is also confirmed that a submarine has only one critical speed in accordance with the shape of its hull, but unconcerned with its speeds.

  • Segmental Retaining Wall(SRW) has been variously applying in Civil and Architecture construction. Recently, the application of environmental element in all type's structures came to essential requirement, and the construction cases of retaining wall using reinforced soil and block are more increased than the past. But, this trend more widely was spread environmental element as landscape work for the backside of reinforced retaining wall as well as block itself. New environmental block, Greenstone Block, developed to apply of this tendency. The retaining wall system using Greenstone can be environmental constructing at both block itself and backside of retaining wall. The material tests, the axial compressive strength test of block and bending test of fiber-pipe, exercised to design and construction of vertical SRW, which were satisfied NCMA standard. Through this procedure, Rewall (ver 1.0) was developed, which can be automation design of SRW including internal stability, external stability and local stability. And these can be considered setback of retaining wall, as well the examples of vertical retaining wall using block presented to satisfying the follows; strength of reinforced geotextile, height of retaining wall, surcharge, types of backfill and groundwater level etc. Many problems investigated on after or before of construction were due to local failure, insufficiency of bearing capacity and groundwater level. Especially, the local failure was many occurred to during compaction or after construction, and the cases of SRW construction is similar to the results of model test on vertical SRW.
