In this study, the small strain shear moduli ($G_{max}$) of uncemented and gypsum-cemented sands are evaluated by performing a series of bender element tests on the specimens reconstituted in the calibration chamber. It is observed from the experimental results that $G_{max}$ of crushed-sands is about 35~50% smaller than that of natural sands. The increase in gypsum content is observed to result in an exponential increase of $G_{max}$ value. It is also shown that the relative density has more significant effect on $G_{max}$ of cemented sand, whereas the vertical effective stress has more significant influence on $G_{max}$ of uncemented one. A prediction equation for cemented sand is expressed as a function of gypsum content as well as void ratio and vertical effective stress.
Determination of jointed rock mass properties plays a significant role in the design and construction of underground structures such as tunneling and mining. Rock mass classification systems such as Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Rock Mass Index (RMi), Rock Mass Quality (Q), and deformation modulus (Em) are determined from the jointed rock masses. However, parameters of jointed rock masses can be affected by the tunnel depth below the surface due to the effect of the in situ stresses. In addition, the geomechanical properties of rocks change due to the effect of metamorphism. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to apply correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between rock mass properties and some parameters related to the depth of the tunnel studied. For this purpose, the field work consisted of determining rock mass parameters in a tunnel alignment (~7.1 km) at varying depths from 21 m to 431 m below ground surface. At the same excavation depths, thirty-seven rock types were also sampled and tested in the laboratory. Correlations were made between vertical stress and depth, horizontal/vertical stress ratio (k) and depth, k and Em, k and RMi, k and point load index (PLI), k and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), Em and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), UCS and PLI, UCS and BTS. Relationships were significant (significance level=0.000) at the confidence interval of 95% (r = 0.77-0.88) between the data pairs for the rocks taken from depths greater than 166 m where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress is between 0.6 and 1.2. The in-situ stress parameters affected rock mass properties as well as metamorphism which affected the geomechanical properties of rock materials by affecting the behavior of minerals and textures within rocks. This study revealed that in-situ stress parameters and metamorphism should be reviewed when tunnel studies are carried out.
Thermal transport from vertical heated surface to falling liquid film in a channel has been investigated experimentally. Air-flow is introduced into channel to make a counter flow against falling liquid film. This problem is of particular interest in the design of direct contact heat exchange system, such as cooling tower, evaporative cooling system, absorption cooling system, and distillation system. The effects of channel width and air flow rate on the heat transfer to falling liquid film are studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that heat transfer rate is gradually decreased with an increase in the channel width without air flow as well as with air flow in a channel. It is also found that heat transfer rate of air-flow is increased while heat transfer rate of falling liquid film is decreased with an increase in the air flow rate at a given channel width. However, total heat transfer rate form the heated surface is increased as the air flow rate is increased.
The goal of reduction mammaplasty is a breast with natural contour and volume, aesthetically situated scars, and a well-placed, sensate nipple and areola. The most successful techniques achieve this through the excision of tissue from the lower part of the breast based on some variation. However, the Mckissock's vertical bipedicle technique is the popular method for reduction mammaplasty. As an alternative modified Mckissock's method, we have found the use of only an inferior dermal flap with a keyhole pattern to be a simple and safe method for obtaining satisfactory aesthetic results. We have used inferior dermal flap for 4 patients recently and obtained the advantages as below compare to the Mckissock's method. 1. Rich blood supply to the broad based inferior flap. 2. More easy transposition of the nipple and areola. 3. More good operation field for resection of breast tissue. 4. Short operation time. 5. Can applied to the gigantomastia.
The advantages of prefabricated vertical drains over conventional sand drains include their relatively low costs, less disturbance to the soil mass, the easinees of installation, and their flexibility which ensures the integrity of the drains during installation. This study tested the change of discharge capacities with respect to the hydraulic gradients for each lateral pressure. From the test results, as increases the overburden pressure, the clay soil is being consolidated, and also lateral pressure to the PVD specimen is increased. Therefore, the discharge capacity is decreased. The size of opening space in the core of PVDs is proportionally related to the discharge capacity. The numerical analysis was performed with utilizing computer simulation with considering field conditions. The results of numerical analysis are compared well with the field measurements.
This paper presents the experimental as well as analytical study conducted on layer-bonded scrap tire rubber pad (STRP) isolators to develop low-cost seismic isolators applicable to structures in developing countries. The STRP specimen samples were produced by stacking the STRP layers one on top of another with the application of adhesive. In unbonded application, the STRP bearings were placed between the substructure and superstructure without fastening between the contact surfaces which allows roll-off of the contact supports. The vertical compression and horizontal shear tests were conducted with varying axial loads. These results were used to compute the different mechanical properties of the STRP isolators including vertical stiffness, horizontal effective stiffness, average horizontal stiffness and effective damping ratios. The load-displacement relationships of STRP isolators obtained by experimental and finite element analysis results were found to be in close agreement. The tested STRP samples show energy dissipation capacity considerably greater than the natural rubber bearings. The layer-bonded STRP isolators serve positive incremental force resisting capacity up to the shear strain level of 150%.

The study of bipedal robot is towards similar shape and function with human. In this paper, we propose a human-like walking pattern compatible to the flexible foot with toe and heel structure. The new walking pattern for a bipedal robot consists of ZMP, center of mass (CoM), and ankle trajectory and is drawn by considering human kinesiology. First, the ZMP trajectory moves forward without stopping at a point even in the single support phase. The corresponding CoM trajectory to the ZMP one is derived by solving differential equations. As well, a CoM trajectory for the vertical axis is added by following the idea of human motion. The ankle trajectory closely mimics the rotational motion of human ankles during taking off and landing on the ground. The advantages of the proposed walking pattern are demonstrated by showing improved stability, decreased ankle torque, and the longer step length capability. Specifically, it is interesting to know that the vertical CoM motion is able to compensate for the initial transient response.
Deep coupling beams are more prone to suffer brittle shear failure. The addition of steel fibers to seismic members such as coupling beams can improve their shear performance and ductility. Based on the test results of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) coupling beams with span-to-depth ratio between 1.5 and 2.5 under lateral reverse cyclic load, the shear mechanism were analyzed by using strut-and-tie model theory, and the effects of the span-to-depth ratio, compressive strength and volume fraction of steel fiber on shear strengths were also discussed. A simplified calculation method to predict the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams was proposed. The results show that the shear force is mainly transmitted by a strut-and-tie mechanism composed of three types of inclined concrete struts, vertical reinforcement ties and nodes. The influence of span-to-depth ratio on shear capacity is mainly due to the change of inclination angle of main inclined struts. The increasing of concrete compressive strength or volume fraction of steel fiber can improve the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams mainly by enhancing the bearing capacity of compressive struts or tensile strength of the vertical tie. The proposed calculation method is verified using experimental data, and comparative results show that the prediction values agree well with the test ones.
The aim of this study was to measure the setup variation for X (lateral), Y (longitude), and Z (vertical) by taking magnetic megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) before treating the brain, oropharynx, lung, and prostate patients on helical tomotherapy. In this study, 30 patients were chosen for each of the treatment areas, and their skin was labeled with a mark on a treatment planning reference point when taking CT. We preceded MVCT prior to tomotherapy and then conducted an auto registration based on the bony landmarks; image registration was used for automatically matching the patient's setup. Lastly, we confirmed and evaluated the translation coordinates of the images for 30 patients. The following shows the comparison result of the setup errors of each part: X (lateral) showed the highest setup errors with $3.44{\pm}2.05$ from Lung; Y (longitude) showed the highest setup errors showing $3.40{\pm}2.87mm$ from Prostate; and Z (vertical) showed the highest setup errors showing $6.62{\pm}4.38mm$ from Lung. This result verifies that the setup error can be prevented by taking MVCT before the treatment, and Planning Target Volume (PTV) margins can be reduced by referring to the resulting value of each treatment part. Ultimately, the dosage of the normal organs can be decreased as well as any side effects.
Space weathering agents such as micrometeoroids and solar wind particles continuously age the uppermost regolith of the lunar surface by comminuting as well as darkening and reddening. Among several maturity indices, we investigate median grain size () and optical maturity (OMAT) of the crater rim walls. Crater rim wall is the most immature place among the impact crater features because the vertical mixing process by mass-movement can enhance the gardening of regolith and the supply of immature materials in the deeper layer to the surface. More than 140 simple and complex craters were considered. Both and OMAT values of the inner rim wall initially increase as the crater size increases until ~10-20 km, then decrease. This transition crater size happens to correspond to the transition diameter from simple to complex craters. For larger craters, i.e., complex craters, it is clear that the inner rim wall of the craters formed in recent eras tend to remain fresh and become mature along with time. For the simple crater case, smaller craters are more mature, which is opposite to the case of complex craters. This is thought to be because smaller craters become flattened more quickly, thus have smaller vertical mixing in the regolith due to mass-movement. We will also discuss on the maturity indices of the crater rim walls at high latitudes as a function of the position angle to see the latitude dependence of the space weathering process.
